Never got on the Rich vs Yazzadabbadoo debate ... Rich is undoubtably talented but he just looks too weird to be wearing the navy blue ... eyes too close together, manchild appearance, small hands, huge head etc etc
As for Yazz has he turned 18 yet .... just give him a little more time ... what we saw on the weekend will shut a few people up. In the end would we have gotten any further this year with Rich in the side .. possibly ... would we be challenging for the flag ... no.
Will Yazz add that x factor in the forward line in 1-2 years time ... yes .... will it add weight to getting the 17th ... yes.
NUFF SAID
..Yaz did a couple of really nice [special] things on the weekend, no doubt.. ..he did a couple of other good things which is to be expected of pretty much everyone.. ..he gave a glimpse of talent and sublime skill when he's switched on.. .... ..Rich as 'odd' as he may look at times had 31 touches, and was BoG in terrible conditions.. ..he was also BoG last week vs cats with 32 touches..
..i think it comes down to what you think is more important to a team, silk and flash across HFF or tough contested clearance work in the guts.. ..would you prefer say burgoyne/stevie J, leon or would you prefer say black, voss, sewell..?.. ..personally i think getting the midfield right/complete is more important than adding class across the HFF.. ..i know we need another avenue to goal, but Rich kicks long penetrating bombs from outside 50 [a couple/few from inside center square], and his long zone/flood breaking passes to brownshaw have been unbelievable this year..
..and talk about Rich havin' limited upside in my opinion is absurd, and smacks of a need to convince oneself that passing on him was the right move.. ..it's like ppl sayin j Selwood has/had limited upside.. ..he's better now than last year, and better last year than his first year.. ..the Gibblet [who i rate highly], who has sooo much upside is still in Selwood's shadow.. ..limited upside is a crock in my opinion.. .to think a kid won't improve fitness/endurance, won't learn better tactics around stoppages, won't improve their skills or get tougher, footy smarter etc etc is v.bogus..
..again, reiterating that i don't think Yaz is a hack or anything like that at all, i reckon he's gonna be a good to v.good player [yet to be convinced he will be great, but too early to tell for most kids].. ..what i do think is that our current list was not at a point when we could pass on a player like Rich, for a player like Yaz.. ..for me it's more a list management concern.. ..it's not that i don't support Yaz, i was rapt with his couple flashes of brilliance just like any blueblood, and yes he should be good for us.. ..
i just think our recruiters might have thought/believed our list was a year or two ahead of where it truely is..I think quite the contrary. Sure, our midfield probably isn't as good as advertised, but blame Stevens, Scotland and Hadley, we may have to move on without them and that does mean our midfield stocks take quite a bit of a blow. Saying that we still have Judd, Murphy, Carrots, Gibbs, Grigg and Simpson. It's another area of the ground we really have neglected and taken for granted and an area that has almost been swept under the rug. An unorganized part of the ground, which until settled there won't be any kind of real surge...
In our back line, Thornton has been the centerpiece for quite a while, but the recruiters struck gold with Jamison and didn't disgrace by using a top 20 pick on a defender in Bower. Add in Austin and the last three or four drafts have really benefitted our backline.
In the Ruck is where we really have sacrificed our picks. Kreuzer (First round Priority Pick), Hampson (Second Round Priority Pick) and Warnock (for two draft picks). Sam Jacobs was a bonus.
Now it gets ugly...
Hartlett (Pick 25 2004)
Raso (Last pick 2004)
Kennedy (Pick 4 2005)
Eddie Betts (Pre Season 2005)
Edwards (Pick 36 2005)
So, for the previous 4 drafts these are the players we have drafted who are the forwards we had relied on to help us kick winning scores. To make things worse, without going into details, we traded the most important one away. Without Betts, what have we got to show for our efforts to revolutionize our forward line. I don't think there is a club who had neglected the forward set up as badly as us, Richmond included. You could say The Shag is the broom that sweeps the forward line issues under the carpet. Well not anymore, our recruiters bit the bullet, passed on Rich and picked the best young forward of last year. Quite frankly there were too many reasons not to pick up Chris Yarran, this also includes Yarran being a creative forward with the necessary skills and ability to complement his creativeness to extraordinary effect.
In my perspective I can live with seeing Rich destroying midfields and defenses with his IQ, penetrating left boot, toughness and vision, but I don't think I would handle it as well if Yazz was on another team tearing a team up with his ambidextrous silky skills, blistering speed, instinctive awareness and goal kicking threat. That is exactly what we need.
Here's an additional argument... Some years ago Collingwood had the option of trading away their highly skilled creative X-Factor for a hard working talented midfielder with a penetrating accurate kick. Even though they desperately needed a midfielder, they chose to keep their X Factor. I'm sure you know, Didak and Nick Stevens were the two players involved.
