Bret Thornton was our equal second best player with Juddy...behind Fev of course. What do some people see????

Anyone who watched the Brissy game today will know that we made a massive blunder not getting this bloke. Ready made gun mid with a great thumping kick, who also has a great head on his shoulders....leadership material if I ever saw it.

Yes, we did need someone to help Eddie, but we also need someone to replace Stevo/Scotto who won't be there in 2 years.

It's a shame. My gut feeling is that Yarran will be another Vance/Livingston when you see quality like Rich and Ziebel running around

My point to all of this is that the club can not afford to make poor decisions like this. We can't afford to make anymore poor decisions and need to get it right if we are ever going to be a chance.

No doubt Rich will be/is a great or excellent player. I love the way he plays, but I don''t reckon Yarran is a wasted pick. If he turns out like a S Burgoyne I'll be more than happy with the pick. Give the kid time, not all kids hit the ground running like Rich has.

Anyways... Pros
Russell was good again
Fev great after qtr time, some seriously magic work
Betts good without actually getting much clean posession, due a big one.
Judd, just how good is he?
Murph, hard work all day
T-Bird, was v.good.

Cons
Gibbs, not quite at his best.
Johnson - I'm not convinced.
Armfield, had a shocker, may need the Russell treatment, a few weeks in the ressies to find some touch.
Only beating the Tiges by 4 goals. I so wanted us to rain more pain on them.

Correct. Only we need the Stevo replacement now. Grigg and Walker are possibles but after that? Rich isn't the guy to run and carry, and there was a legitimate concern that our midfield lacks run, but with Rich that's like saying you want a tall ruckman so you don't take John Nicholls.

Don't know how you figure that..... Because of one good mark at the end of the game? I am pretty sure he was outmarked by a couple of young tigers today on occassion, including Vickery twice.

Look Thornton was OK - he was serviceable, but that is him to a tee. The fact is that we get no drive, attack or even pressure relief from his movement out of the backline. He ALWAYS looks sideways, kicks backwards, kicks short or if he does kick long it's accross the face of goal to "switch" play, only because he seems too scared to take the game on.

Go back and watch the saints game again when Thornton was a late withdrawal - our backline had the best drive and rebound attack seen from a Carlton side for some time. Bower was everything you'd want in a defender that night, he took care of his man and ran through the centre at will to set up attacking moves and launch us into the F50.

We should be past this defensive, chip around backwards bullshit by now.

Geez, I didn't realise Yarran was finished as a footballer already. You would have thought Carlton would give him more than a handful of games before deciding he was useless....

Just an unbelievably embarrassing post on so many levels. :garthp:

How did you react when Selwood was starring and Gibbs was averaging just 6 disposals a game between round 11 and 15 in 2007?

You change your position more than a polls driven politician.

Careful what you ask for Melvey, it might come true...

That exactly what we need. We are to one dimensional in most areas, we need the X factor and need to stop recruiting these 188-190cm midfielders.

We need a flamboyant excitement machine who will ignite a Carlton filled MCG

Gold Kouta, Gold. Melvey's a guru when it comes to recruiting - after all he championed the recruitment of Chris Johnson too - because his mates had him in their supercoach team...

Pros:

Kreuzer - Another good effort the whole game. Gives everything. Jumps, marks, kicks and goals. Even gets down to the ground quickly - that effort in the second half to knock the ball clear was great.
Judd - first half was stellar
Carrots - Very good and can kick a goal.
Grigg - Getting a lot more of the ball. His improved match fitness is starting to show. Are people still annoyed that we picked him instead of jetta?
JR - Another very solid game. Starting to be more attacking, and had some really strong tackles. Loved seeing that!
4 points - We won despite a not playing at our best, which is a great change.
Johnson - Much better today. Showed glimpses of why we got him.
We don't support the Dockers - I mean we've had a bad few years... but can you imagine? Oh the horror!
And of course... Fev - 9 goals and some good chasing. Starred after a slow start. Great to have good Fev back.

Cons:

Kick Outs - AARRGGHH! :banghead:
Lack of polish - We were lucky we played Ninethmond today. Our disposal wasn't flash, and then let them back in the game after having it in the bag. (Pro is we won anyway).
Fisher - Wasn't up to it. Exposed for a lack of pace.
Tackling - We let them through a lot. Nahas must have been coated in teflon. Not everyone of course, but a fair few need some more practice it seems.
Betts - Is having a rough trot at the moment after a great start to the year.
Gibbs & Simmo - Had an off day.

Lukewarm: (good and bad at the same time, a bit like English ).

Ando - Got a go in the seniors finally, but didn't grab his chance.
Bentley - Better this week, but not improved enough. Nice goal though.
Thornton - Some great defense and a pearler of a mark. Just needs to try going forwards as his first option. Constantly goes sidewards or back. Maybe a stint up forward would be good. Once Bower gets back and can take his spot, I'd be very interested to see how Thornton went up forward, as opposed to Jamo.

Pro's

Having the courage to send underprepared and undisciplined "experienced" players back to the 2s.
Having the courage to not bring them straight back in.
Beating a team when we were'nt at our best.
Harts getting a game.
Hammer starting to follow Kruezers example and displaying 2nd and 3rd efforts.
Kruezers maturity
Fevolas skill
Carrazzos improved decision making
Gibbs' finishing skills.
Having the ability to win games we're expected to in difficult conditions. Dont underestimate windy conditions, they're much more of a leveller than rain IMO.
Ratten giving Hammer and Kruezer time up forward. When Warnock comes in, one of them will need to assume that role with more regularity. Good work by the MC to give them preparation time.
Putting ourselves well within finals reach.
Several key players hopefully returning to rejuvenate us in time for September.
STRAIGHT KICKING FOR GOAL

Cons

Posters not recognising Richmonds capabilities. This is the team that went down to a white hot Adelaide by 17 points last week.
Fevs inability to be a team player.
Army needs to go back to the VFL for an extended period and work on his foot skills.
Some posters calling for Stevo and Scotland to come back. You can't compromise your principles based on ladder position. Bring them back when they've met the established criteria, not before. Good, strong clubs dont just live for today, they set standards for the future.

PROS
we won
Fevola
Judd
Grigg's first half shows what he is capable of
Forward line pressure. Please MC dont drop Gartlett
Russell's game. Being dropped has its benefits. Should have been done yonks ago.
Kreuzer
Hampson in the ruck
Anderson was ok

CONS
Dont get too excited folks
Ordinary Richmond side nearly beat us
Fevola so what does the MC do when he puts another effort like the one against Essendon*. Dont worry it will happen
Houilhan For god sake get rid of him. Too slow too soft
Gibbs His effort at CHB when Nahas tackled him was comical.Must of thought he was in the SANFL. Not to forget his marking effort on the flank when he took the short steps and dropped his head. Gibbs has great talent but he must improve his intensity for the 80 minutes. Very frustrating
Joseph I reckon the season is starting to catch up with him a bit. Perhaps a spell in attack could do wonders for him. Give him a different roll to freshen him up a bit
Hampson overhead marking and general skills. Plenty to work on
Bentley Lets hope the MC dont keep him because of one good piece of play.
Armfield Back to the twos
Kick outs
Fisher is finished
Santy not playing
Johnson did enough not to be dropped

overall a win is a win but it wasnt a team effort. It was on the back of a couple of brilliant displays from Fevola
and Judd and Grigg in the first half.

Richmond out played us in the second half except for a brief period in the third and the start of the fourth. Had they had kicked straight the result could have been different.
The only other thing I would say is that we had a few out as well.

I just hoped our MC realise this and dropped the guys who shouldnt be playing

Hopefully Carlos and bbird will be back next week.

Pros
Got to watch the game with Blue Beatle, Blue Sombrero and fellow Carlton men.
Seeing four grown men leapt out of their chairs when Fev kicked that goal in the second quarter.
We won.
Get to see our boys live next week complete three wins in a row(???)

Cons
Had to leave halfway during the third quarter.
Watching Brad Fisher stumble 90% of the time he went near the ball.
Fev sooking for free kicks but got a pretty raw deal.
Umpiring was pretty inconsistent 0 Joseph free kick in the second quarter was woeful!

Im not going to go through all my posts but i also said we need a CHF or CHB and in and under midfielder but obviously you have selected those quotes out.

I also said we have so many deficiencies which one was that x-factor goal kicking type but which do we tackle first
