Apparently he's related to Buddy Franklin. Has anyone else heard that?

.. ..very important to our forward set-up.. ..not only does he give us the option of releasing Betts to play the middle (some of the fastest sharking and extraction i've seen this year from any blues mid) but with betts up forward, we literally double our 'frontal pressure'.. ..with his frame and good marking ability we shoulda given him skinny's number..hehe..

Will build his fitness base and some size over the next few preseasons, and I see him longer term being part of the midfield rotation where he'll pinch hit

Having watched the Freo game a few times now....keep Garllett in the 22....very important role he plays. The pressure both he and Betts exert in the forwardline give us an edge. Put a standard paced AFL player on our list...Stevens etc....and we lose that x factor in terms of pressure Garlett gives us.

Great selection. Great rookie....and many good years ahead with him in the team.

Will be a 2 goal a game player with the odd bag here and there imo.

DON'T DROP HIM

Releasing Betts into the middle should be a priority for us. He is very explosive when he plays stints in there.

Definitely Garlett Yarran and Robbo will provide the options up forward to cover for this and lets not forget 1AW... He can be played up forward as well and his defensive pressure would be an enormous asset.

Garlett's game, rangy frame and pace reminds me more of a young Andrew Lovett than Eddie Betts.

Lovett was a stick when he started at Essendon*.

Lovett played a game or two for our reserves before moving to WA. :donk:

Has the endurance and pace to play up the ground like Lovett and burn off slower mids to hurt them the other way.

The last goal he kicked in this highlight package is Lovett all over...

Takes them on, gut runs down the wing and finishes on the run after getting back inside 50.

I would love to see Garlett on a wing and Yarran on the HFF with Walker.

And then switch.

I agree ..good post BI.

Garlett's nowhere near a complete footballer at this stage, but he has a number of strings to his bow that should come to the fore as he develops size strength and endurance.

1. Finds space well at times on the flank - good potential as a linkman given his vertical leap and marking ability.

2. I've seen him kick a couple of typical FP crumbing goals in the Bullants. Has some x-factor waiting to emerge. He's playing further up the ground now as he's been a bit fumbly and slow to get boot to ball in confined spaces close to goal so far but I expect him to improve this as he settles in.

3. His defensive pressure is good - almost. He often manages to unsettle opponents but is lacking the real burst, power and body strength to really cause more than nuisance value.

So there's plenty to work with but really needs another 2 years of development to be the serious dangerman we need. Having said that there's every chance that he won't develop the physical ability to really make it happen. His attitude does seem very good though so i expect him to give himself every chance.

In the games I've seen him play, he creates a lot of opportunitites for himself around goal and then doesn't finish well.

I think his finishing willl improve. It's pretty hard to teach someone to create chances though.

Not quite sure why everyone is so keen to move Eddy into the midfield. No doubt he has the ability to play there but that is not where our deficiency is. He has developed into one on the most dangerous small forwards going around and surely we cannot afford the luxury of taking him out of that forward mix. (unless we are getting smashed out of the middle)

Collingwood can maybe afford to do this with Davis because they have a heap of dangerous options up forward with Anthony, Cloke, Medhurst, Didak etc. Maybe we will get to that point but I don't think we are anywhere near that

The beauty of players like Betts and Garlett is their ability to create goals from nothing. This is what keeps defenders nervous and accountable and this has been the difference when he (Garlett) plays. They create an element of uncertainty in the opposition defence. When you allow the opposition defence to play with confidence and composure (without pressure) you are shot.

The week before Garlett was dropped he got only 4 kicks ... not good enough most said, but he kicked two terrific goals, especially the first one he sharked off the pack. That is the x-factor; that is what makes them dangerous.

I think Garlett is already important to our forward structure and will be much more so as he gets a stronger body. I agree with whoever said he is ahead of where Betts was in his first season.

If Yarran can develop the tank (and urgency) needed for next season ..... what an enticing prospect, truly exciting. Add another classly flanker (AW?) and a couple of hardworking team oriented talls like Kreuzer and Waite .... Bingo premiership fwd line! ...... (sorry, did I forget someone?)

The Krakoer boys were/are all skinny.
Sometimes it's easier to ride a bump if you don't have the mass to resist the momentum.

The great Kevin Bartlett played 403 games and kicked 778 goals; and he stood just 175cm and weighed 71kg.

Ability and determination to get a kick is a formidable package, regardless of size.
