Just had a quick scan of remaining games for the teams battling for the last couple spots on the ladder.

I have assumed Bris will make the Eight, only bec they are a game clear of the pack of teams on 7 (Carl, Ess, Port) or 6 (Syd, Haw) wins. Of course they could fall in a heap, but I had to draw the line somewhere so I'm betting they will make the finals.

The teams battling for the last 2 spots in the Eight then are Carl, Ess, Port, Syd and Haw.

Haw seem to have a horror run IMO, with games against Coll, Geel, St.K, and Adel. And they also play Port away. So I reckon the Hawks, failing a miracle return to form, are GAWN !!!!

So that leaves 4 teams fighting for 2 spots.

And IMO we probably have the best run home, with 3 games we are almost certain to win (note : I inc the Rich game in this 3, so we'd better bloody win this weekend!), and a higher %. The latter point is crucial, our % is 7 pts higher than Ess, and well ahead of Port, Syd and Haw (all well below 100%).

The other thing is, we have not been outside the Eight many weeks this year, so I reckon when you take all things into consideration, we're probably around a 85% chance of making September.

So, chances are we will make finals

I don't trust this group with 'probably' wins just yet... We've lost too many of these types of games the last few years to start counting our chickens...

The 3 wins I have are against...

Rich
Melb
Nth

Reckon this weekend's game is the only one we could possibly blow out of those 3. Surely we can beat North?? Hammered them in pre-season and they have won just 4 for the year

The difference between dreams and reality is that in reality collingwood would never get to the grand final in the first place

Our destiny lies in our hands. To state the obvious, we have to keep winning games. Essendon*, Port, Sydney and Hawthorn are our competition for the final 2 spots in the 8 with Brisbane just 1 game ahead in 6th.

It's hard to see Hawthorn getting up - with 8 games to play they play 6 teams currently above them incl. Port & Essendon*. Sydney also play 6 teams above them incl. Brisbane, Carlton & Essendon*. Essendon* (play 3 teams above incl. Brisbane), Port (play 3 teams above incl. Brisbane & Carlton), Brisbane (play 3 teams above plus games against Essendon*, Sydney & Port) and Carlton (play 3 teams above plus games against Port & Sydney).

To quote Ratten the games, where the teams vying for a position in the 8 play each other, would be considered "8 point games". We can help shape our and Port and Sydney's destiny by winning our games against them. Having said that the above is moot if we don't have another 3+ wins to add to those wins.

2010 -2012 we'll be a force. It's on the cards

Hawthorn - no chance

Sydney - here's a chance. Looking shaky and have an aging list.

North - if they play like they did against us they will struggle. It was mentioned in the call they have lost a heap of goals through Thompson and Grant which they will have to replace.

So at this stage, Sydney, Adelaide and North look like the teams most likely to fall with St Kilda a bit of a wildcard.

Thus, up to 4 clubs can move on in in 2009. You'd say Melbourne are no chance. Freo are crap, have a crap coach and would be long shots at best, yet in 2007 they made the grade. West Coast reckon they're finals bound in 2009 but they lack depth and experience. Brisbane are a bit one dimensional and will struggle away from the Gabba. Port are squibs.

That leaves us, Essendon*, and Richmond. A psychic on new years day reckoned Carlton and Essendon* would be the big improvers in 2009.

I heard somewhere that a team has come from outside the 8 one year to top 4 the next, something like 10 out of the past 11 years.

Richmond look less likely than they did perhaps last year?

Essendon* are quick, but they may suffer burnout come season's end.

So our odds are quite good if we play to the top of our game. I think we can move past Sydney and Adelaide and possibly North in 2009. Top 4 isn't out of the equation, though it will be tough.

Well, recently Brisbane looked like they'd be the team to come from outside the 8 into the top 4, but then blew it against Essendon*.

Hawthorn have been the biggest flop this century. Hopeless.

North have stuggled as predicted, as have Sydney though they are still an outside chance of making it.

Adelaide started poorly but have got themselves together and done pretty well in 09.

So it has been Hawthorn, Sydney and North the three to drop out, for Carlton and Brisbane, and at this stage Essendon*.

Hawthorn may still make it as I reckon Essendon* will lose their next two. Only Port can stop them.

I was checking out the Dawks injury list the other day and to be honest they have had some major talent out this year. They will be a much better team next season. I agree that Sydney and North look like they are in for some lean years.

..injuries aside [and crawf's retirement, under-valued], the way the dawks have played is no excuse.. ..they've been lackluster, when their fiery, intense and hungry gameplay got them their flag..

If we're to move over the threshold in 2009 we need to shove another side out of the eight. So who will it be?

Hawthorn - no chance

Geelong - ditto. Can't believe they only lost two games last year

Bulldogs - only if they have major injury concerns

Sydney - here's a chance. Looking shaky and have an aging list. I hope we beat them sensless in Sydney.

Adelaide - another who look to be on the decline. A definite chance to fall.

Collingwood - look pretty good early. They're usually there about.

St Kilda - If they fire on all cylinders they are top 8 material. Sometimes they misfire though. A moderate chance of falling, but just as likely to be in the 8.

North - if they play like they did against us they will struggle. It was mentioned in the call they have lost a heap of goals through Thompson and Grant which they will have to replace.
