I have watched almost every game Setanta has played for the past few years. I have also watched the last few years of waxing and waning comment on Talking Carlton. It is a bit cheep to comment now that it is starting to come good for Setanta, although I thought there was a period there where he had prooved himself as a defender.

Setanta has been a forward from day one. he developed his attacking instinct in Ireland before he came out. he also scored 7 in a game for the bullants early on if i remember corectly and I have watched the perfect storm come together this year.

he has looked very dangerous in a few games this year and not delivered, but the main difference last weekend was the fact that teammates looked for him this weekend. I appreciate that you have to earn you stripes and that players will not hit you up on 'potential' in the heat of battle, but this week setanta overcame a major hurdle, his teammates now see him as a viable option.

when setanta makes a mistake it is seen by comentators, and i would suggest his team mates, as a result of a lack of skill, but he is judged too harshly due to his unorthodox style (and charachter).

If he can stay fit he will be the biggest story in afl next year and possibly september this year. I agree he has been missmanaged and i sympathise with beano's frustration with the myopia that has judged o'hailpin on this forum and at the club so harshly, but that just makes setanta's (potential) success so inspiring. The fact that he has stuck it out through the leg issues, the biffo media storm, the lack of team mate support and the delisting of Aisake just shows how full on a determination the man has.

let's hope this is the beginning and he has a couple of dominant seasons for the blues and makes a solid return on the investment. It is a shame that egos got in the way of Aisake's time at the blues (aisake is no doubt as guilty here as Teague and others) as his performances in the bullants and his earlier exposure to afl footy suggested he could have been more agile, quicker and more skilled as a player than his older brother. Keep working hard setanta, you're the reason I watch Carlton games (Carn the Bombers!).

He had a lot to learn about forward line play after that Bullants game, but it's fair to say without all the positional changes he would have learned (and been trusted at) the ins and outs of CHF much sooner.

Sorry maybe I wasn't clear with what I was trying to say or maybe just being misinterpreted. Wasn't commenting on the MC decision to play Cloke ahead of him, was only commenting on the decision they made late last year to play him exclusively as a forward. Setanta himself wasn't happy with the decision and many on here still wanted him to play as a tall defender, however, what I am pleased with is the fact that they stuck to their guns regarding that. Also happy with the fact that big Setanta now seems to have grasped the role and is working his butt off to make it his own.

Carlos is my favourite player has been for a number of years. Even when he plays for the bullants I will check to see how he went. Why? I don't know.

Maybe its because of where/when we selected him. With all the draft penalties, he was a ray of hope in the years after black friday.
Maybe its because of his passion and desire to succeed.
Maybe its his competitive spirit.
Maybe its because he does things which amaze me, even when occasionally doing things which make me put my hands over my eyes.

I know he's not our best player. Not by a long shot. But should he be at Carlton next year. Most definitely.

Early this year and last year I was convinced he was out of favour with Ratten (not just for the Cloke thing) and they were going to cut him from our list. But, given his chance unimpeded he has played his way into another contract and become (at this stage) a valuable cog in our team.

Good on you Carlos. You made it a much tougher decision on them now.

I am wondering if Santy's passion is what confuses the MC. It may be a double edged sword in that his positive passion is there for all to see but maybe he reacts badly when negative things occur. This may have the MC not knowing how to deal with him. As a professional in a pretty straight laced occupation, my bosses often wonder what to do with me as I am full tilt - either on or off, which annoys them intensely. They think when things go badly, I should not be so 'up in arms'. Maybe the big fella is a little like me in that regard. Just a germinating thought.

Just for the record, I have Setanta's signed number on my jumper.

His improvement rate is phenomenal. Yes I think he will hold down CHF over the next 5-7 years.

Well - It looks like I was wrong

The Big Fellow has really stepped up - His pack marking has been some of the best we have had at the club in a while- He has straightened us up and taken a fair bit of heat off Fev


Now if he can just improve his general awareness and get him to become footy smart he will be big asset

at the moment for every positive there is a negative - If he keeps going the way he is the positives will soon out way the negatives

He's been able to just settle in a role of late instead of being shifted week to week into different roles.

I've no doubt he would've settled into a good key defender had he not have been shunted into the ruck and all over the shop.
