the theory is fantastic - plenty of upside

but warnock is miles off being able to hold up the ruck with hampson

plenty of potential

plenty of upside

great on paper for the structure

but miles away from being reality

seems eerily reminiscent of a certain marketing slogan.

I would expect that he could share ruck duties consistently and to good effect by mid-next year. I'd be disappointed if he wasn't playing some good footy by then.

This Kreuzer forward pipe-dream might be less relevant if Setanta continues to improve as a tall forward. Could all of Setanta Kreuzer and Fev share a forward line? I doubt it

Must persist with Setanta as a forward (though im not getting that excited we did play freo).

Wiggins must come in for Fisher...... Fisher is a waste of space

Fev, Setanta and Wiggins around Betts and Garlett.

Wiggins has been tried and has failed time and again. Lets try something new. Hartlett/Austin/Walks... anything other than Wiggins.

I'm not sure this is something that can be fixed this season. But we can still get some value out of the next 8 weeks if we're smart about it.

Stage 1 - The MC finish swallowing their pride and leave Setanta forward for the next 8 weeks. He keeps doing what he's doing. The mids will begin to realise someone other than Fev can take a mark and win a contest. Fev realises with a partner up forward, he gets one less opponant, he doesn't need to do i all himself, and he doesn't have to take himself and his man to contests other people are winning. We may need consultants to explain this to Fev using some sort of pictorial representation.

In other words, spend the rest of the season letting everyone develop some confidence in Setanta, and letting Fev and O'Hailpin work out how to play around each other.

Stage 2 - Sit Chris Yarran down after the post season wash-up and tell him we want him to kick 40 goals off the HFF next season (in place of Brad Fisher), have Cordy tatoo a training program on his chest, and make Chris Judd his training partner.

Stage 3 - make Austin and Warnock weights partners and lock them in the gym.

Stage 4 - spend a pre-season working out fwd structures and drilling.

Stage 5 - Austin to CHB, Warnock to the ruck rotaing through FP with Krezuer. Waite to the wing with a licence to roam.

Stage 6 - Think of a more understated membership slogan. Something like "F@$% Essendon*".

Season to taste.

Am in complete agreement on every point, even the ridiculous ones. POW

..Walker will make a huge contribution up forward.. ..genuine hardness at the ball and mongrel at the player, elite afl endurance, high marking but also good on the ground, with strong work ethic.. ..will be our ace across the HFF..

Yep, all that together with hopefully a higher disposal efficiency.

..i dunno, i reckon it's always been standard, it's more just the occassional mis-kick that tends to miss by a big margin which seems to exaggerrate it.. ..i wouldn't call him sub-par when it comes to AFL skills.. ..when he came back last year his skills seemed to have improved, maybe all this forced time on the sidelines with more coaches has enabled him to improve..

WHO is up there is one thing.
HOW we get it there is another.
I think the HOW is currently a bigger worry.
I think we can fill out the spots in forward line (as we will all over the ground) in the next year or two. BUT, unless we can improve our strategy/game plan going into the forward line, it won't matter much who is there and if/when we lose the high qual players, we will have nothing. geelong, bulldogs, crows seem to find a way forward without a gun forward line. the saints, last year's hawks & old lions had great KF's but they also use(d) them well - multi-layered & repeated leading, decoys, generally knowing where and when to go (as do the players bringing it into the forward line) and also where to be (eg. front & centre) when the ball does get bombed in.

Similarly, I am concerned about the number of times we lose the clearances, despite having such a high rated midfield. This will come into play a lot this week against the Swans. ie. Do we have the right strategies? If so, are they not being taught well enough, or do we need more time to execute them better?

i am also a bit worried about kruezer's well being if at CHF - Fev does not generally tend to be that aware (or concerned) about teammates in front of him. (Whitnall, Fisher, Setanta...) Yes, he seems genuinely happy when they do something well (mark, kick goals) but too often it appears that he doesn't think anyone but him can do the job. I am torn about his value in the team Vs his destabilising effect. I would probably lean towards keeping him but we must find a way to capture his goodness and jettison his badness.

HOWEVER, back to first point, the HOW is my immediate priority!

Let me start by saying I am rapted that we won ugly against Freo today. Interstate wins have been few and far between in recent years, so congrats to the lads. BUT, that first quarter was inexcusable and so too was our finishing in front of goals (again). So...

I've got three words for you ;) ... too predictable, no structure and poor finishing.

Only one forward option: We still go to Fev too often as if he is the only option up front. We have the odd game here and there where we mix it up and have done it very well, but that doesn't happen often enough. Carlos has been playing up front lately, even when we may have needed him for a defensive option, so I guess the coaching staff are trying something. But they need to keep trying. Remember, noone in the herd controls the herd, so we need to make it unpredictable.

No structure: In a sense this ties in with the previous para, it's all Fev or nothing. And if that means Fev having a shot outside 50 on the boundary line then we'll still take that option. Worse, if Fev takes the mark he rarely, if ever, contemplates looking inside to a teammate in a better position. Of course, this is a flow on effect because noone offers any leads because they know they're unlikely to be honoured.

Further to that, there's the old chestnut of double/triple teaming of Fevola. Where are our free men? What about creating space, decoy leads? All pretty basic stuff.

Frontal pressure: Do we even know what that is? Well, yes, of course we do, at times we apply great pressure inside our F50, but too often teams run it out without a care in the world. I know we can't expect to lock the ball inside our 50 every time our opponents have the ball, but we need to get better at minimising those instances.

Our finishing in front of goals: In 2009 it has been shit. It has cost us games we should have won and very nearly cost us again today. I don't care what the reasons are we just need to !@#$%& fix it! Every week. Not some band-aid one week solution. I'm not sure what plans/practice we have in place for our goal kicking at training, but it's not working. Fev used to convert at comfortably over 60%, now, he's missing more than he gets. This further exacerbates the "Fev is the only option" problem.

If you look at the bigger picture the team is getting better and players are improving in general terms. But, if we are fair dinkum we need to start fine tuning. And quickly!

:yikes:

..actually, we're rated very well for scoring goals at stoppages.. ..our clearance work is pretty good, though i agree with our mids it should be better.. ..it will improve over time as our rucks gain experience, but we still lack that a-grade in and under bustling type..

..well, Fev's got some support this year, he's got 74 and Edwardo's clocked up 36.. ..Murphy's 28 has also been a reliable source.. ..but we still lack either a kp [setant looks most likely at this point, by a fair margin too, just late start into team and then games missed injured], or a medium sized fwd kicking goals to add to the list.... ..i reckon if they give santy the chf spot, over a full pre-season he'll come on in leaps and bounds next year.. ..i guess the med sized fwd rests on Yaz for next year, if he really comes on over pre-season.. ..though he's still v.young.. ..seems Hoops is getting his games down back again..

I reckon Robbo will play a lot of games forward as well. And I like that he's a different 'type' as well. Good defensively. Strong body. Preseason he was getting some ball as a leading forward pocket. I'd like to see that come back in to his game.

I think our forward line is a little under rated.

There are only 3 teams that have kicked more "points for", we've scored a total of 11 points less than the Saints for the year so far.

It's far from perfect but if Fev had kicked straighter (as he normally does) we'd have racked up some big scores.

I think our defence is still the worst part of our game. And I don't just mean the backmen, I don't think out Mid's work all the well in defence. Even our champ Juddy spends little time inside the back 50.

I'd like to see another marking forward alongside Fev, a Jack Riewoldt, Mitch Morton, Russell Robertson type. Fisher is our closest but I think he may struggle to get back in our side.

Something to work on as we progress...

....we've kicked good scores cos our mids have been chimin' in quite a bit, not because our fwd line's been productive aside from one or two..
