Well, how the hell do you know if the one you get is the right one? How much time do you give him?

Till the end of this season.

He would have to stuff up big time between now and the end of the season for that to happen. Cant see Swann pulling the pin on him unless their is a disaster in the first half of next year. From what i hear Swann and Icke are very happy with Ratts.
Certain players are not high on their fave list though....

My question about time was actually about the "new" coach that J&k wants right now.

I agree with you 29, i don't think Ratts is anywhere near getting the sack just yet.

Great coaches win premierships. There's an s on the end of that word for a reason.

OK I'll bite (shoulder shrug emoticon). I know you're currently focussing on cornering the market for serial smartarse comments but you accidentally piqued my interest.

Paul Roos is in his 7th year as Sydney coach.

Matthews won his 2nd flag as coach in his 9th year as coach
Jeans won his 2nd flag as coach in his 19th year as coach
Norm Smith's 2nd flag - 8th year as coach
Reynolds 2nd flag- 8th year
Checker Hughes 2nd flag - 13th year
Mchale 2nd flag - 8th year
Kennedy 2nd flag - 9th year
Bentley 2nd flag - 14th year
Hickey 2nd flag - 9th year
Kyne 2nd flag - 9th year
Blight 2nd flag - 11th year

Mark Thompson is in his 10th year as coach. Let's see if he joins the above list of mediocre coaches.

I'm not living in 1982 - Carlton are no longer born to rule. You don't get to click your fingers to get premierships served up on a platter.

And just to state the obvious, Brett Ratten has won zero flags (not even in EFL division 2).

Club29, are you talking about the not-so golden oldies ie over 27s? Are there other, younger players low on the fave list? Is a tabloid-friendly forward on a certain post-season unvitation list?

We all know what a woeful list developer Roos is.

He's now squealing for concession picks.

Cop it Roos.

Agree - Sydney's rode their list as far as it could take them. They made their bed etc

Tough luck that new teams are going to destroy their rebuild attempts

Yeah so bad he is that his team has bottomed out and earned 3 number 1 draft picks and still struggling to make the 8

I'm not talking about Ratten.

Roos list management reminds me of Carlton post 1995.

Trade pick after pick after pick.

When they did keep the pick, they used it on Daniel O'Keefe who has done nothing.

Could have taken Mitchell Brown and had a replacement CHB or CHF.

I'm not sure I want someone at our club who is going to run the list down like he is doing at Sydney.

 easy now. I agree that Roos has done damned well (I even wrote it 30 minutes ago :smoking:) - he's squeezed the stone dry which is all you can ask.

But to paraphrase some old guy: "topping up comes before a fall"

And I certainly agree Carlton are in no position to belittle Sydney's achievements.

I think most rational Carlton supporters would agree Effes.

We could win a premiership in seven years though.

Look we all know this is an academic discussion - Roos isn't going to coach elsewhere and Ratts is probably staying put.

But for the sake of the argument, there's no reason that Roos would follow the same path at a different club. Sydney have been paranoid about bottoming out for over a decade - maybe Roos made the best out of the constraints he operated under. Maybe he saw that 10 clubs are rebuilding at any one time and he saw an opportunity post Lions/Power dominance. Maybe he's impatient and is happy to take short cuts at the expense of the long term.

It's probably a bit of all that and more. If you were looking for a coach you'd have a chat about these issues, and if you were serious about him, but concerned about him being a short term-ist, you'd ensure that list management were out of his hands.

Like I said on another thread I wouldnt blindly rush and change coaches but would target one and Roos would be my choice....
the Swans play ugly football but given the brief Roos has had...ie keep them in the eight and playing finals at all costs to keep the boys at AFL house happy he has been successful.....
Keep Ratten another season and then change.....maybe Ratten will surprise but I doubt it......if that change occurs, I would also expect the footy dept to be changed including assistants and recruiters.

Recruiting is always a difficult job and no exact science and Wayne Hughes has done a fair job but I think some of his choices
are stalling and we have retained some players too long...there are no young key forwards with potential to make it and we lack serious leg speed and to be honest we could have done with Daniel Rich in the midfield to take some heat of Judd, Murphy and Gibbs.
Warnock of course could be a major fatcor allowing Kruezer to spend time at CHF and when you lose your two allorunders in Waite and Walker it restricts you.....and of course Chris Yarran is still a wildcard...trouble is thats a lot of iffs and buts...like Ratten I'd give the recruiters another season but I'd be wanting some results and some of those holes fixed not bandaided..

What's with all this ''Roos'' stuff ? Hasn't he previously said that once his time with the Swans is up he is
off to live in the U.S. ?

Maybe I misunderstood , but I assumed that would count him out of coaching elsewhere. :?

murray you didn't misunderstand that - Roos will be moving to the US after the Swans gig and no matter of hoping and a praying is going to change that.

He has stated it so many times, it's scary.
