Pros:
I thought Setanta's first quarter was fantastic. Carey like. Just needs to finish off his good work in front of the sticks.
I liked Fisher's efforts. Thought he was really clean with his hands and presented well all night.
People can't blame Jordan Russell for the team's woes this week.

Cons:

If the best kicks in the side can't kick straight (Fevola, Murphy, Judd, Houlihan) then what hope do we have? They all missed very gettable shots. Don't know if Ratts can be held responsible for that.
Those 50m penalties against us when we had all the momentum in the second quarter.
Thought we had too many defensively minded players in the midfield with Grigg, Joseph and Carrazzo all tagging. We were too reactive around the stoppages, much like the first quarter against the Saints. Then there was Bannister as well who in hindsight should not have been picked.

I couldn't believe it... the Team has not learned a single thing from the last time they played them.... When the game was close in the first half, Two or three Free Essendon* players were on their own and in the corridor only to receive and carry the ball with ease and no pressure......

Bannister was picked for a cameo role against the Saints but tonight he showed why he was gone as a Footballer... Shocking....


The Kids Austin, Bowyer, Browne and AJ were shot to pieces.... After showing signs last week, their confidence are shattered....

Stevens - wow he's lost it - last year you'd think

The entire young backline was horrific when the game was up for grabs - i thought cost us the match

-Browne - very disappointing after some good games. Lacked composure skill and toughness - which had impressed me in the past
-Armfield - embarrassing - not AFL standard at all
- Bower - after 10 great games was awful
-Austin - made a blood curdling error
- Jamo - bad but better than the other shockers
- Banno - started well then...

Fevola - what a tool. the fish rots at the head, and while the rest were battling away in the first half, Fev was shocking. So many incidents where he let us down

The whole team was flat and insipid. no run from the back, no support from the mids. Gutless effort.

The break hurt us - that's the club's fault. Shocking preparation to turn up and play like that. The coach is responsible for that.

Knights has been highly impressive, even last year. Ratten has not been highly impressive.

To be fair, Essendon* were terrific - I've been sick of try-hard tough-guy Carlton fans talking Essendon* down when they've been highly impressive all year as a young team with plenty of injuries. What cause do we as fans have to be beating our breasts. Not just jumping on them now - Essendon*'s depth is easily better than ours - they have a stack of pretty good young players who have a dip and some exceptional pace while we have Judd, some No 1s (very good talent but not awe-inspiring) and a bunch of 21 year olds of whom some will be good but are nothing special.

Where's our depth in talent? Robbo, Yarran, Garlett are all highly flawed as first year players. We have a few injuries as all clubs do. We're still well back for depth.

A good test of character now - most of which we've failed this year. Whenever we get a wrap, we fall away.

We're better than what we dished up tonight. But a great test of Ratts as a planner and motivator.

There are 3 excuses i can come up with to explain such a terrible performance


1- The Week OFF... totally affects the Mental readiness of the players..


2- The Huge Distraction of the Rape allegations


3- Looks like The Saints had flattened up physically and drained us mentally because we played a non stop physical game against them

I tend to agree with those that question Ratten's suitability as the coach for the journey we are on.. We have the ability - but it just isnt being harnessed properly.

maybe its a development thing with him as a coach - but it also may be that we are looking at some serious limitations.

There was so much to play for tonight but such a poor result..

Ive said before that we will just scrape into the 8 - but maybe it would be a better thing to just miss out and have the structural changes that not meeting expectations would attract..

Not hard to see how a loss in either of the next 2 matches will be telling in this regard..

Going by what?

The Bombers have 15 players on there list that are top 25 draft picks with 9 players inside 10. Missing was McVeigh, McPhee, Hille and the promising Hurley and Gumbleton. Throw in Prismal who teared us a new one tonight and they have plenty of depth and talent to seriously be contending for a flag within 3 years.

and Allan Richardson is the best recruit of all.

Pro: No more of that "Essendon* are a bottom 4 side" crap!

I guess nobody knows what the future holds Some richmond people would have said they'd win a flag before Hawthorn after the 04 draft - Wallace preferred the Tiges at that point, and he had plenty on the line to make the right call. Hanging on to yesterday's conventional wisdom might make you feel better, and it might end up being next month's conventional wisdom again. Right now, there's no good reason to think CFC is in better shape than EFC*.

Its easy to look like world beaters when the opposition was a Carlton that capitulated like they did.

But things are never as bad as they feel or as good as they might seem.

So Essendon* will have plenty of games against teams with more resolve that Carlton had in round 13, and Carlton does have a combination of players and coach that will bring success.
