With Austin in and Thornton back would love to see Austin play down forward this week

Would prefer T-Bird up forward personally. Austin held his own down back against the Saints and Thornton just has the experience at this level which might help him against a young Essendon* defence.

went to my first training in 35 years....long, long time between drinks

Austin was involved with Setanta, Kreuzer and Fisher in drills that involved leading out from goal.

I like Garlett however he only got 4 poss's against the Saints and went missing last time we played Essendon*. Next year and beyond he should be a regular.

I like Garlett too ...especially his defensive and harrassing work off the ball ..which doesn't get noticed

Pretty good !!

Garlett does have that surprise factor that worries other teams , but , that's the way it goes .

Just hope that everybody is switched right on , including Brett Ratten . ( he holds the key ) .

I want to win this game sooooooooo bad! Play to our potential Blues, we'll smash em if we do.

Anyone who is upset that Garlett has been omitted for the Essendon* game, you might not know, but vs St.kilda Gartlett's stats were;

Kicks: 4
Handballs: 0
Marks: 0
Tackles: 0

So he wasn't exactly setting the world on fire with those stats. Besides his role is to provide pressure on opposition defenders, by chasing, tackling etc. 0 tackles against St.kilda does not warrant an automatic selection against Essendon*.

By the way, anyone else on this site there when the Blues last beat the Bombers in a GF (1968)?

Unfortunately, I also witnessed our loss to them in 1962.

I was there in 68 but not 62.
68 was my third GF, thanks to the charity of one of the Christian Brothers at my old school.
Saw StK 66, Rich 67 and then us in 68. I still reckon we were lucky and can't work out a couple of the frees paid against Blethyn for going to early. Warick Capper would have had hundreds of marks denied.
I'll take it just the same.
In 93 I was on a 747 returning from Ireland and the game was being replayed on the giant screen on the bulkhead, one metre in front of my face. I've never recovered.

I don't think I've wanted us to win a game this badly in a long, long time. Stakes are high... a win will leave me feeling on top of the world... a loss :yikes:  I honestly struggle to comprehend what that would feel like.

Mate...I'm nervous Nellie.

We should win.

But I can't help think how I will feel if we lose...and I don't want to go there.

This is our year to make the finals. Better be.

My very first Carlton game was the '68 GF.
Been a supporter ever since.

Look at the replay - the referred pressure applied by Garlett's chasing was critical - and will be sorely missed against Essendon*.

I too thought the pressure Garlett put on contest after contest, second, third efforts put enough pressure for the Saints to ruch their game and not set up as they usually do.

Looks like we'll be playing a zoning game through the midfield. We had to anyway.

Looking over the list at present, if we wanted to get another runner in, the options were Robinson, Yarran, Russell, Johnson and at a pinch, Wiggins.

Robinson still needs to recharge his energizer batteries, and I'd put a line through Russell, Wiggins and Johnson given their form.

That leaves Yarran, whose fitness base is publicly acknowledged as lacking.

As for Garlett, he's probably a bit burnt out again. I'm happy that the club is getting a lot more proactive with that.

I don't mind Garlett's omission. We don't beat these guys by trying to out-run them and turning it into a score fest, we've tried it the last 3 times we've met. We need to lock this game down, keep it to under 100 points per team.

Tomorrow night is a must win....I don't think I could take another loss to this bunch of Ron Evans. That said I am far from confident. If it's wet we might struggle, that's a mighty tall side.

I don't need to look at the replay, I was there. Garlett isn't in the team just to chase. He is in the team to tackle the opposition defenders, causing either a holding the ball decision our way, or to allow our forwards to get the loose ball (once disposed), so we can score. He has done that well for us previously, but against St.Kilda he wasn't up to his best. O tackles against St.Kilda, is not what I call good pressure.
