Can the experts (Gilly, Cazzesman etc.) tell us why he wasn't drafted in the National Draft? The above stats are bloody impressive on face value and make it sound like he should have had no problems getting drafted. But obviously something concerned recruiters given that he lasted until the Rookie Draft. Just curious...

The beauty of his role now is that it plays to his strengths.

The GPS stats last night were consistent with stats I've seen before where he's compared against others. Consistently runs faster and longer than any other player.

Like his coolness and concentration. So dedicated to the task, will not enter into silly games or get distracted.

Compare him with Thornton as an example:
- opposition shoves T Bird and he goes nuts, loses concentration, gives away a free
- opposition shoves AJ he just absorbs it, shows no emotion and walks back to make body contact with his man.

AJ is a professional.

Hey there mate, leave T-bird out of it. He has had a fine season so far..... as has AJ

Possibly thought of as being a tad small and light - which looks like he has worked on assiduously.

Also a question mark on disposal skills - which I am sure he is working on as well.

We can have him.

Aaron was on 3aw's sportstonight program tonight. He said that he loves playing his current role and doesnt think there is any room for him in our midfield. Was asked who his toughest opponent has been and he said Boomer Harvey in the nab cup, apparently he kept stepping on his foot and giving him punches, said he wouldnt play like that himself. Milne was saying alot to him on Friday night, said he couldnt repeat what was said on radio, he spoke to him after the game and congratulated him on his game. The hair was dyed blonde because he was late to training and as he already had a crew cut he dyed it.
He has been getting big wraps all day by the radio stations.

I like what Milne did. He might be a weazel to us Carlton supporters, but giving lip to a rookie and then having the respect and decency after the game to congratulate AJ on a great game is good sportsmanship IMO.

I don't think we will realize how much we need him until he misses a couple.

The thought of coming up against the Lovetts, Milnes & Harveys of the competition without him is a scary thought.

I think he will improve, but tbh I think that even if he doesn't he will still play in a premiership with us. Every single team has a matchup for him, and they are usually guys who tear us to shreds.

The impact of Joseph, Armfield and Browne on the team can't be underestimated.

Joseph is a sensation

I'm not 100% sure about Army long term but he's fast and aggressive

And I think Browne is a class act who looks like a midfielder in the making

Between them they've changed the structure of the team for the better and we now have a great mix of young tall and small backmen. Add 2 seasons to Jamo Austin Bower and the 3 little guys and you have a premiership backline. An extra class runner is the missing piece for mine, and I'm not sure that Army is it.

It might be Yarran and he is classy, but from the VFL game on the weekend, he didn't show a real burst of ball carrying pace which can change a game's dynamic. I get the feeling he'll look quicker in the forward line where he can hit the ball hard with superior anticipation, rather than with pure straight line speed.

What can u say about AJ ... bloddy love him.

If everyone in the team had his professionalism and work ethic ... my god .. we would not be coming we would be there ... and IN A BIG WAY.

Cannot say enough about this kid ... so important to the team ... and a lot of people do not even realise it ... and a rookie to boot!

Man love x 1000 for the kid ... he is what I want to see in all players ... pride for the jumper and a bloody great fair player to boot.

Legend in the making mark my words

Will be a gun mid fielder
Has an arkward kicking style but its effective.
Has an excellent footy brain. Makes correct decisions most of the time.
His greatest assest is a combination of pace off the mark and being hard to tackle.

Find of the season but from what i saw last year i thought we had found a good one for a steal.

Read this on Big Footy a couple of years ago:

- AA U18 2007
- Best Tasmanian player U18 @ carnival player 2007
- 2nd leading disposal winner in the carnival (87 disposals at an average of 29 per game) - ball magnet
- Equal 1st for goal assists in the carnival (7) - good disposal and hurt factor
- Tested very well at draft camp in particular for the 20m sprint (6th - 2.91s) and agility test (1st - 7.91s) - powerful athlete combined with good endurance base.
- Arguably the 2nd best clearance inside midfielder in this years stock (to Masten) - very valuable type of player
- Has senior footy experience playing for the Tassie Devils in VFL

Reportedly has excellent endurance as well, tough and hard at it and can also play a 'run with'/negating role with the ability to work of his opponent well.

Crikey, how did he not get make the senior draft with those stats? We got an absolute steal and well done to Ratts and the MC for sticking with him. His tagging role is part of an education in running with good players and finding out where to go to get the ball. I think he is too good to to remain a defensive option. Would love it if he develops into a Boomer Harvey type.

If he ends up like Harvey he can get away with dropping his defensive focus :smoking:
We need our midfielders to have defensive awareness - I think this is coming along ok with guys like Gibbs and Grigg developing their attacking and defensive games concurrently. Joseph will always have defensive ability and inclination, and the attacking stuff seems to come naturally too.

Thanks for letting us know. I just went on to the 3AW site and they have it up.

It is worth a listen to. AJ is fairly funny.
I'm glad he is getting a bit of recognition for a good job, but even more, I'm glad he's playing for us. A great grab from the rookie list, and had quickly become indespensible to our side. Shuts down players completely, as he did with Hooper, and now is even becoming damaging the other way. If he is able to shut down Lovett or Stanton when we play the bombers, we'll go a long way towards getting the four points.

great interview thanks for the link

Good on him for dobbing Boomer in - that's shit behaviour standing on someone's foot.

Didn't realise he had 12 contested possies last week  for a back pocket that's awesome.

Great characters these Tassie lads.
