What a game! I would have loved to get the win, but we can't be too disappointed.

A few notes:

- I think Waite & Thornton would have got us over the line
- Browne played his best game for the club tonight
- AJ was great... again...
- Setanta was also very good. He took a couple of strong marks are really started to show some footy nous
- I thought Stevens was poor early but got better as the game went on. It was nice to see him show some agro in the final quarter

If you want to risk losing a couple of braincells, head over to saintsation for a look. They're trying to look smug and act as though it was business as usual. But the relief is palpable. They flowering know it.

Disappointed with another < 2 goal loss.

but we'll take a lot more out of this game than st kilda.

Our defence was good when given a chance one on one.

Forward structure lacking, and Fev costing himself time on lead by squwaking for free kicks.

We just got smashed at the clearances time and time again when it mattered. if I saw another tap out the back to 3 unopposed st kilda players I was going to lose my mind. Ruck and boundary setups never looked right and St Kilda's clean hands a big advantage over our fumbling at times.

Kick outs, and structures at the opposition kickouts still a concern. Huge concern.

Simpson and Carlos had their best games for the year in my opinion.

Fitness isn't. Boys ran out the game well.

But I think we'll really take a lot out of this.

Very good effort from Carlton tonight.

Probably could/should have won it, until we take our chances we wont win the close ones.

Turning point came from our back six. Rattens moving Austin to defence as a loose man in front of Riewoldt changed the course of the game. And it was our run created from Bower and co taking chances from defence and through the corridor that got us back into the contest at a time when we were getting flogged at the centre bounces and stoppages in the 2nd quarter. Then we started winning the stoppages and capitalised VERY well on our chances.

Excellent effort from Gibbs, Kruezer, Simpson and Judd's 3rd quarter was super.

Very encouraging game from Browne, Jamison, Austin, Grigg, Joseph, Bower and Hampson.

All these players showed that they have what it takes to play at this level.

Tonight showed that in Austin, Bower, Jamison and Browne, throw in Joseph we have 5 defenders who have the mental capacity to take us into September. As a unit; cool under pressure, physically tough, mentally tough, AND take responsibility for mistakes unlike Stevens and Thornton. Austin should stay in before Thornton for mine.

Fevola disappointing.

Ryan Houlihan showed why he wont be apart of any of our September campaigns of the future- he simply cant handle big pressure games.

Stevens again letting us down, and after Houlihan he must be next to be dropped.

Weed out the players that cost you at critical times... Russell is gone, Houlihan and Stevens should follow. It's not the young brigade they were near flawless.

Bummer, bummer and bummer.

First 10 minutes cost us badly, always hard to play catch up footy against a good team when your 5 goals down. Could never get that goal to get our noses in front.

Simpson - Great game.
Gibbs 2nd qrt, was the spark in that comeback.
Fev - just keeping his chin up.
Bower, his run and carry, no piss farting around, straight down the guts.

No passengers tonight... Great team effort.

Highest score against the saints so far this year.

I don't want to take what is essentially the shine off a good game despite the result, however, Houlihan's last quarter was certainly nothing to be proud of. The panicked hospital handball over the top to Judd in the forward 50 to avoid contact, and then a bit later when hes either paddled the ball on or chipped it along the ground straight to, as BH has pointed out, 3 uncontested St Kilda defenders, rather than put his head over it, were just plain frustrating.

All things considered, I'd be dropping him well before Garlett for the Bombers game, possibly for Thornton, and play Thornton or Austin forward instead.

Worst post of the year. Garlett is a rookie kid who has freakish abilities and is only going to get better. Its when guys like him get to 50 games that we win our next flag...........not RUSSELL (did you really say that ???????????????????????) or CLOKE (what the ??) or.........................................................HARTLETT (FFS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Great effort by the boys tonight. I reckon tonight was a "line in the sand" game for us. We harrassed, tackled and pressured most of the game, and even early on we kept coming back even when down 5 goals. Fev should have got at least 4 more frees, and I'd like to hear the Geesh's explanantion of that one in the first quarter, whereas Reiwoldt gets 90% of his.

Hoops goals and we win, simple as that. And that was against a team that most say are palying the Cats for the cup. When Gibbs and Murphy develp physically enough to stand up in those games, and we get 1AW and 206 on the park, we'll be a contender.

I'm glad we aren't playing next weekend, because I could use a bit of a break from the umpires.

If I had to put up with that shit next weekend, I'd be done with the AFL.

Take a number Lurker. The umpires, in particular McBurney and Vozzo were flowering woeful.

3 times with my binoculars they hesitated to blow the whistle for a Carlton free when the free was there to see.

They helped the Saints in the first qtr with some shocking decisions.

this might sound crazy but I believe we got more out of this loss than what we did out of last weeks win

we played undermanned, we lacked their experience and we are not in their weight division

I just want us to apply this intensity when we play the likes of Essendon* and Fremanmtle as these are opponents we should be beating

Joseph and Austin are showing us they are going to be permanent selections in the future and Bower continues to impress with his bravery to take them on. Most 21 year olds would retreat into their shells if Reiwoldt kicked 5 on them.

Having said all that our kicking to advantage and for goal is poor ... Eddie Betts is a great example ... marks 25 metres out ... so what does he try to do ... he breaks rule number one when kicking for goal by trying to caress the ball in ... doesn't work because it goes against all his natural kicking motions.

Also too many times (and not just today) when the opposition have turned over the footy and we have the ball on the break we do an even worse turnover instead of setting up or converting for goal

You started your post so well Hank, a really good summary of the game - I agreed with everything until the Fevola comment onwards:

Fev was good tonight - competed, kept the pressure up, didn't drop his head and didn't complain much (considering he was raped by the umps early)

Hoops was good also and did his job tonight on Sam Fisher (I can't remember Fisher at all tonight) - but the miss in the last was disappointing for sure, especially a bloke with his skills.

Stevo may not have dominated, but gee he was pretty good at times tonight; fired off some brilliant handballs both in close and outside - I think your comments are a bit disposal-related...

As I said, a really good summary, but the last couple of comments are unwarranted IMO.


Can I also add - that bald-headed umpire No. 3 (McBurnie??) is a biased little maggot. The umpiring in general wasn't too bad tonight apart from his bullshit calls. Every time I wondered what the hell was going on I looked up to see a bald No. 3 umpire awarding a free kick to St. Kilda. Just a biased little maggot that should crawl into a dark hole and die like the little Gerbil he is.
