St Kilda have a lot of tall/tallish defenders (Hudghton, Gilbert, Dawson, Fisher, Blake), we only really have Fev as a main forward with someone like Kreuzer/Setanta/Hampson alternating. Surely something doesn't add up there?

Looking at St Kilda they seem very tall all over the ground (the above plus Gardiner, McEvoy and obviously Riewoldt and Koschitzke). Can we exploit this?

Wouldn't surprise if Milne doesn't play. he's missed 2 with a sore knee, they're 11-0, and a week off to come. Many on Aintsational amazed at Gwilt's omission, and he's listed as emergency.

Gwilt is rubbish... imagine being amazed.

Seriously.. their success has been die to them playing well as a unit.. not cos of who is in their side... you have to isolate s0me of their weak links away from the unit and attack those....and hopefully let the thing unravel from there....

They have played high intensity footy and have had luck with injuries..its pretty hard to sustain that at a high level with quite a few average players for a season... put the pressure on them .. and keep the intensity up.. isolate their weak players.. and stop the from playing as a unit..

not saying its easy... but its easily not impossible ...

Some are good some are very ordinary....and that set up means they lack balance...

If Fisher was in the team, then Fev would still be our only reliable avenue to goal. Do we expect that Fish was going to stand up and kick 3 against one of the better defences in the league? Hmmm.... maybe, but I'd wager it wouldn't have happened. So we lose Fisher and gain a hard-bodied player. A bloke who has had a fair bit of success in our sturcture previously, who we know can play a role, and who can focus on a game for 110% of the time. That will do me in a match where we need to be up for every single second. We don't lose anything by dropping Fisher, and we have a bit to gain from Banno's inclusion. The team looks good to me.... realistically probably not good enough to win. But fingers crossed we are at least good enough to push them all the way!

More than adequately covered!

I've enjoyed reading all of the discussion in this thread, but really

I JUST WANT TO HAVE A WIN AGAINST THESE FLOWERING cauliflower.

Seriously I've put up with the behaviour of Saints fans for over 7 or 8 years and I reckon they can all get [REDACTED]. I used to have a real soft spot for these unts but that has completely evaporated recently.

PLEASE LET US BEAT THESE FLOWERS, I CAN'T STAND THEM OR ANY OF THEIR SUPPORTERS.

I HOPE THEY STAY FLAG-LESS FOR ANOTHER CENTURY OR MAYBE FOREVER....

My memories of last years match:

- King killed us in the ruck (not playing this time thankfully)
- Riewoldt was dominant until Jamison was moved on to him in the 2nd half
- Hayes and Gram were both very good at the stoppages
- Milne ended up kicking 5 or 6 (is he fit this week?)

If we can prevent these problems reoccurring and if our forwardline can function well we are a real chance. Easier said than done I know as they have improved significantly.

Agree. Hayes and Gram really stood out to me last time we played them - ran riot.
Bannister might be lined up for hayes

Banno on Hayes is perfect IMO. Hayes won't stop running and running and running, he needs to shutdown.

Banister to Goddard
Carrazzo to Hayes
AJ to Montagna
Kreuzer to the forward line .
Setanta and Hampson to create a contest

Run them off their feet

Agree...what about that little f&^%$r Milne? I'd prefer AJ on him if only to see that little shit do it in his shorts....

Dont get bogged down with Milne... thats the small picture... killing off their supply is the big picture.
If we choke the supply and control the game in the midfield...who cares?

Plus he is shit.....the only thing you wanna do with shit is scrape it off your shoes after you step on it...

Just choke their ball carriers.. and leave their midfield up against ours...and just run the flower off their feet...

True although I'd imagine they would still get their fair share of inside 50's no matter how well we play up the ground. Maybe Armfield can take first shot at him. I agree about the importance of the midfield though.

I recall a game against them a couple of seasons back at the dome when he hit a purple patch in the 3rd and got about 7 or 8 clearances in a row and poured on the goals. We just could not sustain it for not long enough. If I remember correctly Betts was in the middle at the time. Pace is the key against this mob.

Reckon we'll be competitive, but the twin towers may just prove too much, with midfields about even. Intensity for the four quarters is a must for us to win. Aints by 24.

Banno has played very consistent footy for the Bullants...he's on the list...he's 27...you'll love him if he runs off the line and flattens Luke Ball in the first minute though, right

Thats what I hope Banno's role is, smash and block who ever plays on Judd and Murphy.

I reckon we will be competitive, but at the end of the day, I just don't think we can stop Kosi and Riewoldt. You can pressure their midfield and make it scrappy kicks in, it doesn't matter with these blokes. their marking ability is exceptional and both are in form.

i hate st kilda  its at the point where some @#$%&! was on the radio the other day saying he thought his saints were a little bit shaky, but thankfully they have a bye this week. this from a team that until 2001 had beaten us less than 30 times in entire life span as a football club. it is seriously time to end this shit. come on blues... right the wrongs. restore balance to universe

Gotta admit thats a good call though ill pay that. Considering how easily they have beaten us in years gone by i think he has a point...

I recon it'll be a relatively close game with the Saints having the slight edge and buffer of around 15-25 points pretty much the entire game. I recon we will match them in most areas, just wont be able to kick enough goals with their defenders picking our attacks off and rebounding while they have the twin towers marking everything

Definitely. I well remember how well he was playing for us last year until he got injured. I'm hoping he gets back to that form. Very useful and a good sized player who can add some physicality.

As someone else said on this forum earlier, I'm hoping he can do the Stenglein role for Judd and Murphy. If we can give them a chop out and let them get some run through the corridor, then we are a good chance.

Very happy with this news today. Go Banno!

Hoping that the rumours about Tbird arn't true..

Its too easy to write a player off and say he shouldnt play again. It just seems human nature (or football fan nature) to consider a player isnt in the best 22, and if he's been around in the Dark Years, then he must be no good.

The logic sucks.

If he's on the list he's on the list generally for a reason. With Bannister its not because he signed a multi-million dollar multi-year contract - its because he offers something.

bannister was very good up to Round 5 or 6 last year when he got injured. Very Good. Just accept it.

it doesnt mean he'll survive on the lsit next year but this is about winning a game in 2009.

Well two years ago we had a huge build up for a Friday night game where Carlton was emerging, the media build up was on and it ended up in a 100pt flogging against Hawthorn, which then led to players laying down, Pagan sacked and Ratts taking over.

I want a win at all costs attitude, if I see an insipid performance, you just have to question where we are going?

The spolight is on the leaders tonight, especially Judd and Stevens. Both these boys need huge nights and inspire the team from the start, Stevo can be the real match winner tonight if he works his arse off and doesn't let a tag take him out of the play.

I think some people need to open thier eyes with regard to Fisher. He has certainly not been our worst forward in the past two weeks. The bloke busts his guts, and if you watch the game (and I do wonder if people actually 'watch' the game, ie no emotion) you will see he was involved in many of our goals, perhaps not with the last possession, but involved. Not every player has to be lightning quick, many a player before Fish has contributed without the pace of a Betts or AJ.

To bring in another defensive minded player, smacks of reactive football again. Once again we go into a game trying to change our gameplan to negate another teams. We need to back ourselves once in a while against a good team, and see what happens. We won't win playing negative football, against a team who has been great in terms of pressure, which we all know we struggle with.

If we are Fev conscious tonight, and lose, then the MC will have cost us the chance to win another game. It is not the first this year, and it seems unlikely to be the last.
