i think gibbs has more upside but atm selwood is among the top handful of midfielders in the comp and gibbs is at best an average starting on-baller.

the biggest weakness in gibbs' game as i see it, and he said it himself on channel 7 a few weeks back, is his lack of fitness, and when in 3-4 years time he gets that up to a good level i believe he'll be a much better player for it. he'll never be an elite runner, but nor will selwood. and this is where selwood's mental toughness to push himself right to his limits far shadows gibbs' ability.

i think gibbs has the better skill set, better poise, and is more creative. i'd like to see him show us why he was known as a great overhead mark in his junior days. this is one area, along with goalkicking, he can beat selwood in.

gibbs is probably a bit more versatile in that he can go down back or up forward but you'd have no problem keeping selwood in the midfield all day if he keeps playing the way he is.

both have great footy brains but i think the biggest difference between the 2 is selwood's toughness and attack on the footy. i'd go as far to say i think he's as courageous as anyone in the comp. another area in which selwood has so far shown he is much better than gibbs at is his ability to step up when the game is on the line. think back to the freo game last year where he almost single handedly got the cats over the line.

i think both will be great leaders in different ways. both have ever chance to be future premiership captains.

i think gibbs plays his best footy right in the guts. so far, selwood has been given this opportunity and gibbs has had to do his apprenticeship in other ways. but i think it's clear that around stoppages and in traffic is where gibbs makes his biggest impact. i'd also like to see him used forward of centre more as he's such a good deliverer and i think he can be a weapon in front of goal as well.

while anyone can get injured, at least there aren't any question marks on gibbs' knees.

both players should become elite midfielders (if selwood is't there already) and realy you'd be happy either way regardless of which one you had on your list. but on current form and what's been achieved over the course of their careers, obviously gibbs has a bit of ground to make up.

All that and he didn't even get in Champion Data's midseason all australian side.....

Are those stats for all the AFL or just Carlton?

What do Selwood's corresponding stats look like?

Those are stats for Carlton :donk:

let's not get carried away here - Gibbs is classy, but he'd be happy to make the All-Australian 3rd team at this stage.

Those stats are for Carlton. The only one he didn't fall within the top 5 in the club is for contested marks. Just turned 20, the guy is an absolute freak!

Selwood is so far in front of Gibbs at the moment it's not funny. Don't forget he polled 19 votes in the Brownlow last year and is in the front line of betting this year. He may even win it this year, he's going that well.

Gibbs is where he should be. He's only 20 years old and in time I believe he'll be the equal of Selwood. It's also a lot easier for Selwood playing for Geelong. It may even turn out to be similar to the Voss V Buckley debates. At the end of the day Buckley may have just edged in front of Voss due to his longevity in the game. Voss was tough as nails and that obviously took a toll on his body. The same will happen to Selwood, it's just a matter of how he manages his body as he gets older.

We did not make a mistake in getting Gibbs at number 1. The risk was too great to go for Selwood considering the medical reports on his knees. We should also remember that teams with picks 2 - 6 also missed Selwood and those that had picks 4, 5 and 6 would be hurting more than we ever will with their choice.

I made the comment to some friends a while ago that history may show we did not pick the best player when it comes to 2 of number 1 picks, I'm talking Gibbs and Kruezer. That comment is not having at go at either Gibbs or Kruezer it's just that Selwood and Rioli at the moment are in front of our boys. But I'm also very confident Gibbs and Kruezer will be champions of the Carlton Football club and worthy number 1 picks.

Let's revisit this in 5 years time, the answer will be clearer by then.

RUBBISH!!

what are we rating them on?? footy ability?

ok.. maybe at the moment Selwood is in front

but what about other measures??

- humanity
- ability to cut footloose
- the power to move you

??????

Gibbs >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Selwood
