He's already one of the premier taggers in the comp judging from his scalps.
Next week will be interesting when he cops Milne or someone of thet ilk.
His current form suggests he will have a win.
We have done well from the rookie list.

Shouldn't this be in Talking Players.

But yes he will be pretty damn good.

Agreed. He's also not a cheating flower of a tagger like Baker or that bloke from Freo who everyone hates.

I think he's arrived.

He's made a name for himself, and we all know this guy is the man to do the tagging job for us.

The stats will happen for him.

But the 1%ers is the thing that the stats don't show well enough. His efforts with shepherding, Tapping on, smothering and tackling are so important to the team fabric.

And the pace is exceptional. Like Doc Sherrin noted in the preseason...this kid has pace to burn.

What an amazing find...and surprise for all Carltonians circa 2009.

Will be a fantastic long term player for us, has definitely been the suprise packet of '09'.

He's the key to us knocking off the Saints next week also, as we can never find someone to shut down bloody milne....

When deciding on recruiting 'hits & misses', I reckon rookie hits cancel out ND misses.

Hughesy's flying I reckon!

I agree with you......and they're already starting to jell together as a unit.

I reckon he's going to be a top player.

I have to admit i thought he wasn't up to it at first, but I have been really happy from about R4 until now. Very important to the team already

Has always been very coachable.

Noteworthy that against West Coast he sprinted off the ground before Kerr, who doubled over once gasping for air while Joseph took a drink as he walked the line. His focus was top notch and noted by a member of a rival club's coaching staff, who lamented a kid they are grooming for such a role lacks Joseph's drive.

Hopefully he will be able to add more strings to his bow as his U/18 form shows he clearly knows how to find the pill.

Want this bloke to keep avoiding plaudits, and get no recognition from the wider footy community for as long as possible. Just wish he'd snagged that sausage on the run yesterday to top off another great game.

Very happy with the kid.

Can see him getting Milne or Dal Santo next week depending on which Ratts thinks is the critical role. It's pretty clear that Ratts gives AJ the matchwinners.

So maybe AJ on Riewoldt :-)

..alot of teams get carried away with possession stats, but there's always a spot for a player willing to sacrifice their own possessions to negate a dangerous ball gatherer/burst fwd..

A caller rang SEN this morning about AJ and mentioned that he wished that the rising star panel would take notice of him and how he was going unnoticed. Patrick Smith actually had something good to say about one of our players and said he was not unnoticed but maybe unheralded, said he was a good player and other clubs were aware of him.
He is so cute.

His intensity is awesome..... hard to spot on the box but saw in Q3 flash across the TV screen to lay a shepherd that was meant to hurt. He also layed a tackle on Travis Johnston in the lat quarter and buried his scone into his ribs.

Great stuff!!!

This guy is seriously one of the most important players in our team.
He's the kind of player that makes supporters proud.
He would have some serious B&F votes. Hats off Hughesy sweet rookie get.
Great application and character, probably the best shut down type in the comp at the moment,
Super impressed with the kid, he and his family can be very proud of his efforts.
Maybe some of the others could run some sand dunes in Tassie next summer.
We should be mindful this is his senior debut season and he will have a poorer game soon.

Robbed again with no nomination. What's wrong with those spoonheads, I thought it was awarded for consistent displays not flash in the pan 5 goal performances?

Recruit of the year for me.

Didn't Dick kick 3 goals the week before?

OK ... I admit it ... I was wrong about AJ ... he might develop into a really good ordinary player ... well done ... better than I had hoped for.

So far so good.

I've only met AJ once, sitting next to him at a Carlton function. The one thing that struck me after that night was his personality. Seemed a very serious and very determined bloke.

He might not be the most skilled footballer on the list, but he might be the new prototype for the number one tagger.

Mind of steel, tough and extreme pace.

In the old days Mind of steel was the only prerequisite.

Having the pace he has just opens up his tagging options and makes him quite versatile for someone with a limited current job description.

Maybe he can blossom into something else, but if we get 100 games of excellent tagging out of AJ it will be a fine career and will help the Blues a hell of a lot.

Read this on Big Footy a couple of years ago:

- AA U18 2007
- Best Tasmanian player U18 @ carnival player 2007
- 2nd leading disposal winner in the carnival (87 disposals at an average of 29 per game) - ball magnet
- Equal 1st for goal assists in the carnival (7) - good disposal and hurt factor
- Tested very well at draft camp in particular for the 20m sprint (6th - 2.91s) and agility test (1st - 7.91s) - powerful athlete combined with good endurance base.
- Arguably the 2nd best clearance inside midfielder in this years stock (to Masten) - very valuable type of player
- Has senior footy experience playing for the Tassie Devils in VFL

Reportedly has excellent endurance as well, tough and hard at it and can also play a 'run with'/negating role with the ability to work of his opponent well.
