I'd love to see Brad Fisher loose across their halfback line

To the history buffs...

did we stop West Coast's winning run at 11 or 12 games in 1991?

North went man on man today, and in the first half, before they lost players to injury, it worked. They backed in their backmen to win man on man, and it meant that St Kilda's run through the midfield was stifled, especially when balls were turned over by North. Play zone and turn it over, and you get burned going back. Play man on man, and the opposition don't have loose men all over the place when you turn it over. Something to learn from that I think, more clubs might try it.

Also, DO NO LET FISHER PLAY LOOSE ACROSS THEIR HALF BACK LINE.

Watched most of this game yesterday, North went man on man and flooded the midfield. This stopped the saints run and carry as they couldn't find space.

Revolt was a massive target for the saints but was surrounded and the times they went to Kosi, he was just too big and bagged 6. On the flip side, if Fev is going to be the target next week, we don't have that other big tall marking option to go to.

Siegfried said, don't let the saints play with a loose man across the backline, otherwise its all over.

There are a lot of quality Saints players that can hurt us:
Goddard
Gram
Kosi
Montagna
Hayes
Ball
Dal Santa
Reiwoldt
(Milne out injured?)

Plus Fisher and Hudghton are a couple of mean defenders.

We will have to be our best and hope the Saints are a bit off their game.....a bit like they did to us in 95.

Joseph on Montagna.
Armfield on Schneider
Grigg on Dal Santo (did well on him last year)
Jamo on Riewoldt (did well on him last year in the 2nd half after Waite was moved off him)
Bower on Kosi - if this doesn't work then Setanta
Judd/Murph head to head with Hayes/Ball

Need to make sure the likes of Goddard/Gram don't give them easy rebound from defence......maybe Grigg to do a hard tag on Goddard and Gibbs to go against Dal Santo in the middle.

I don't think Bower would be the choice for Kosi. He struggles with the real power marking forwards still and Kosi's the best in the business at this stage. Thornton's done well on him in the past.

..Kosi's easy to handle cos he's got zero awareness.. ..a few solid hip/shoulders to soften him up and then you can put him off his game..

You know Clinton Jones will go to Judd and wear him like a glove. The prick needs to be sent a message that he'll be in for a world of pain if he wants to go anywhere near our captain. But I doubt we could be so proactive.

Thornton to Kosi
Jamo to Riewoldt
AJ to Milne
Carrots to NDS/Hayes

Waite would have been handy for this one :banghead:

Doubt we will see King playing against us after his hit on Sam Power.

I think the biggest problem we have against the saints is our age – and the associated problems that it brings. Likely lineups have it that the saints have ONE player under 22 – Geary. We have NINE. This shows up in median games – where we have a median of 61, and they 128. They have 15 100+ games players. We have 6. They are an average of 2.5 years older than us. 2 kilos heavier. Pity we don’t have Waite and Walker because we simply need all the experience we can get.

We look pretty good on paper but these discrepancies are incredibly difficult to overcome. Stronger bodies, more composed, more experienced and stable decision making, more pre-seasons (and better tanks as a result), more comfortable they (as individuals) have made it and belong. I know we think ‘we have nothing to lose’ – well neither do they: they are 11-0. Why would they worry about dropping a game?

It is a daunting task this game. I will be realistic and hope we don’t fade out of it, give up, or drop our heads. The focus should be on tackling, attacking, one on one, and intensity at the ball. Contested possessions. For the first time this year: I can’t see a way to win. But I still think we can get a lot out of the game. I hope they bring the attitude to forget the scoreboard and focus on the process. For 100 percent of the game.

At this stage the Saints are tougher than us, faster than us, more skillful and have more players capable of breaking a game open. This is just a sad fact. They have players in every part of the field who can damage us badly. The stuff we've done in recent times won't work against them either. They will try to choke us, pummel us and in turn outrun us, and if we play into their hands like we have other teams who have done the same thing (Sydney, Adelaide, hell even Brisbane at times) we'll be smashed to high Heaven. Yes, they've been a bit off the last few weeks, but their opposition has been pathetic and they are notoriously weak-minded when it comes to playing teams they know they'll beat. They WILL NOT make this mistake against us.

We need to dominate the clearances (they'll lose King but get Gardiner back), make our tackles actually count (ie don't just hold them while they have all the time in the world to find a teammate), use the corridor, man-up on the rebound (if they get free reign to get the ball into their 50 we're screwed) and FFS give Fev some support because Hudghton/Fisher will be all over him and Gram/Goddard will be there ready to take the scraps. Accuracy is critical, so no flowering shots from the boundary! Juddy will be tagged heavily, and probably roughed up for good measure, we need to actually give him a chance to move rather than expecting him to do everything himself. We need to prove to blokes who have it had it too easy against us for too long that we're not going to take their shit anymore, so Montagna, Milne and Hayes need to be sent a message, not allowed to run all over us.

In short, if we're to win next week we need to do essentialy the opposite of what we've been doing since round three.

We will have to step up again from last week but we can win this one.

Pressure on Ratts and the MC to get the match ups right. Will need more contributors this week as Fev & Judd will not get the job done by themselves.

Need some body size against this mob. Tempted to bring in Bannister &/or Hadley. Grigg is struggling after a lot of interruption through injury since the pre season and should be given time to get himslef fully fit and in form.

Need to match there run from defence and guys like Houlihan, Garlett & Betts need to be very good defensively on Gram, Goddard & Fisher. We need run ourselves through Browne, Armfield, Stevens & Scotland.

Thornton on Kosi and Bower on Reiwoldt. Love to see Browne on Milne. Milne will sh&t himself with Browne's physicality.

AJ on Montagna. Would really like to see Bannister go with Dal Santo.

Kruezer up fwd to assist Fev will stretch the Saints defence with Hammer doing most of the ruck.

AFL Game Day (Ch. 7, 10am, Melb. time) praised Carrots as our new shut down player (& later added AJ), & gave Bower a big wrap as an attacking defender
Looking forward to seeing what the match-ups will be.

I'd make just the one change this week. In: Bannister Out: Garlett

Garlett was good against Brisbane but will struggle against the bigger bodies. Bannister must play and shut down Dal Santo or Hayes.

AJ - Dal Santo
Bower - Riewoldt
Thornton - Kosi
Browne - Milne

This game is winnable. Saints are starting to lose momentum. We'll have to lift for this game tho. It was shown last year that the saints midfield is very slow. They have played the zone very well this year, and that has covered for their lack of leg speed. Hayes, Ball, Dal Santo, Baker, Goddard etc. are all one paced. We need to try and break the lines with speed, of ball movement and by running. For this reason, Garlett should stay in the side, and play an important role. As will Armfield, Joseph and Betts.
