No, i see that too. Whitey was a gun. Injuries cut his time in the game short. I think Browne will be a gun too.

Nice to see fan recognition of the positives the likes of Browney Armfield Joseph Hammer offer us.
The signs were there for these guys last year in the bullants and great to see them moving forward in their development. Kudos to Harris and his team.

The Judd. What more can you say...
He imposes himself on the play when we look fragile. He leads the way with his actions. He is THE MAN!

Also nice to see in the 1st half the players attempt to move the ball and link through the corridor.

Thought Scotto was terrific.

The lack of defenders really upset Voss' team structure and Ratts and Fev took full advantage.

Well done blues!!!!! :smoking:

Looking agitated at being on the receiving end of a 16-8 free kick count, Voss bit his tongue when quizzed on the officiating.

Why should the free kick count be used to determine the quality of the umpiring? Are we meant to get an even free kick count every week?

Are the umpires just meant to pluck free kicks out of thin air to make the free kick count even?

If one team gets caught a lot and gets pinged for holding the ball then obviously they will have more frees against.

It isn't a very difficult concept to understand, yet we see highly paid people in the media (not just this article) referring to the free kick count.

Fev got a couple of soft ones but so did Brown and Bradshaw
he can't complain about the Carrazzo one as Judd had picked it up and kicked the goal anyway

Umpires were pretty good

Just watching the replay - that run in the last quarter by Hammer after the handball from Kreuz was so exciting! One for the highlight real and look out for the future there is more to come. Bloody fantastic!

Did anyone else see this?

Midway through the last quarter, there were six or more players scrambling for the ball at the top of Brisbane's goalsquare, when Juddy came from nowhere.

He sliced straight through the pack, and no-one laid a hand on him as he scooped the ball up off the deck one-handed, lit the afterburners, skirted the goal-line and fired a right-foot daisy-cutter to a team-mate in space at half-back.

That, and Eddie Betts' assist for Jeff Garlett's near Goal of the Year were the highlights for me.

As well as hearing the club song sung loud and proud by group after group of Blues supporters right around the ground afterward.

Well done Blueboys. Well done Brisbane.

We controlled the game for the first 3 quarters. We should have been 50 points up at 3 quarter time.

Still a much better effort.Best win of the season.
Great to see
Browne
Hampson
Armfield
Joseph
They have added something to the side

Ratten should role the dice this week and play Austin up forward
Put O'Hailpin down back

We had nobody at chf
Fisher is not up to it but it doesnt help havingonly one forward target
Austin could be the answer.
Cant believe he was dropped
I reckon Jam needs a rest.
His shoulder is stuffed

We finally had a good running backline. Why do you want to stick another tall back there?
I think the coach wants to settle Thornton, Bower and Jamo back there.
Austin in for Jamo if he is not right.

Dropping one of the talls for the Bears game was a great move by the MC. The balance looked right.
All the changes were good but playing three guys slightly underdone almost came back to bite us.

Great win.

We need another marking option in attack.
Our HFL was non existent for most of the night

Austin is worth a punt
He has size and mobility
Just tell him to make a contest

Fevola will have Maxie back on him this week. His toughest opponent. We need someone else to step up and kick us 3 or 4.

And not Cloke despite 5 goals yesterday

I want o'Hailpin in the size
He is a personal favourite of mine. Didnt do much last night but some things he did were brilliiant for a guy his size.
He would be an ideal matchup for special K

Look at it from his perspective. Fev getting reamed by the umpires is considered by all coaches to be the status quo and something they factor in to their strategies. Vossy's no doubt wondering why his team had to be the guinea pigs for the radical new concept of Fev being treated like anyone else.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!

When the side was selected and we went with three tall defenders it was the first time I felt confident we could win. FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY got the mix right in defence. Along with Browne, Stevens, Armfield & Scotland gave us a lot of drive from the backline.

I am an Austin fan BUT we cannot bring him into defence. If he is to play it is to replace a key defender or as a marking fwd. Could easily fill the role of Setanta or Fisher who IMO are both handy at best.

A developing forward line of Fev at FF with Kruezer & Austin rotating between FP and CHF would be very potent and stretch most defences. Add Betts, Garlett, Houlihan and our mids rotating through their and it is pretty dangerous.

Thank you Carlton fans. You were awesome in your support at the Gabba.

Wasn't it fantastic to see Carlton jumpers and colours anywhere you looked in the crowd; almost a home game.

I really admire our interstate supporters in every state. Says a lot about the Dark Navy Blue Army. The players will never walk alone.

Great to put away an interstate win...."you can do it"

A very balanced team across the park. Good mix of youth and experience, height, mids and smalls.

The ins again played a significant role. Well done MC.

We could do with another target in the forwardline. You can see what a Brown Bradshaw combo does for a team...really opens up their for them.

Armfield's running just broke the lines from defense. I don't want to lose the Bower Army combo in defense...they both really attack.

Browne...best game I've seen from him...tough as nails and Garlett's forward pressure really warrants his inclusion.

AJ...whilst he had a defensive role closing down his man completely, it seemed that he had heaps of possession, but I guess it's the fact he was in the play nullifying, tackling, shepherding, tapping on....his 1%ers are as good as possessions.

The highlight for me was Kreuzer and Hammer's run on the wing in the last. That is a deadly weapon moving forward. Never seen anything like it. 2 ruckmen with good pace running the ball forward from the wing. Magnificent.

The other kids Gibbs (did you see all his clearances? He's damn smart), Murphy and Grigg really do play like level headed skilled senior players.

Finally, Judd, Fevola, Scotland, Carrazzo and Thornton (our senior citizens if you can call them that) really led from the front.

Congratulations Setanta on your 50yh game in the Dark Navy Blue. You didn't star, but some of the things you did were a step forward. You proved you belong. Keep it up. Bad luck about the Simmo free against (incorrect decision) when you took that mark. Good goal and a couple of good assists.

Now for the Saints before the break. Lets stick it right up 'em. "you can do it"

Couldn't work out what the ruling was at the game, and even on super slo-mo today, I couldn't understand how they've called it too early.... I thought that was a very exciting piece of play and showed that Setanta is fully into the nuances of positioning now - his skills aren't up with the best - but his thinking and understanding of the game appears to be - even the handball to set up the Scotto goal last night was brilliant thinking given that everything went pear shaped the minute he lost his feet again....

Thought his ability to take the ball cleanly at CHF and spin around and deliver to Fev on the lead was great ... the most pleasing part was the kick, under pressure he took the pace off the kick to allow Fev to run into it, really good for mine for someone whose skills aren't natural but carved by determination.

Annoys me comments like this in the AGE:

Quote:
... the home side was already struggling to cover the absences of tall defenders Joel Patfull and Daniel Merrett.

What about " ... the away side was already struggling to cover the absence of key players Jarrad Waite and Andrew Walker, not to mention the interrupted season of Grigg, Carrazzo and Scotland who are yet to find match fitness and form."

Grrrr ...

I'll preface this with a disclaimer: I only got to see 2 and a 1/2 quarters, and watched a highlights package of the second half.

Jamison was not keeping his feet well at all, which is how Brennan kept getting away from him.

Midfield tired despite Brisbane operating a man down from midway through the first, but you could probably put that down to three blokes with questionable match fitness. They all added something, but I thought Grigg kept getting a rush of blood when he gained possession forward of centre.

I like that Fisher & Setanta are making their opponents respect them up forward, but that's two games against mediocre defences. They do try and chase, which is at least providing the opportunity for the smaller blokes to lock in on any rebound. However, Fisher could have walked away with three goals last night; the one from 48 m out showed me he can't back himself from that distance, especially considering that he slotted a snap on his weaker foot from about 40 out not long after. His set shot miss from closer in was just lazy goal kicking and he knew it.

So for this week I think we need to review Jamison's fitness, encourage Setanta to get airborne and bust some packs 40 m out from goal in the corridor and look over Fisher's tape with an eye to who can replace him in that medium forward role, if anyone.

Again, more corridor play would be nice, we're losing out when we dominate play only to fire scoring shots from the boundary.

I thought Setanta played a great game. His numbers aren't that high but his efficiency is close to 100%. His footpass to Fev was a gem and he set up a lot of momentum with crisp handballs.
Bower was good, especially in the first half.
Houlihan's goal on the run at a critical time was a blinder.
Armfield plays on instinct and that run of his on the last was great.
Fev could have had 10 and a pity it is that he sprayed a few early.
Fisher not making the distance from 40 shows he is not the answer at CHF, although his left footer from about 35 was a beauty.
Garlett will be a genuine star of this comp. He has the uncanny ability to get free and marks above his height.
Brown is a superstar for Brisbane and there can be no argument. He would have to ge the best contested mark in the comp bar none.
Great win for the oints but we will have to improve a lot to get over St Kilda IMO.
