I thought the questioning was abysmal so its hard to judge Ratten.
Of the 10min, 2 min was spent asking why Waite didnt do what Professor Healy suggested and have the Malceski surgery. How dare he. I mean, Gerard was a physio apparently about 20 years ago. Why would Carlton and Jarrad listen to one of Melbourne's top orthopaedic surgeon? Didnt they read Gerrards' article???

Other than that the usual pre-occupation with Fev and Setanta-cloke incident. I think not geeting an ex-coach to replace Walls is showing. Jumped the shark.

Waite should have had the Malceski surgery - It's success rate is currently better than the conventional method and you are back quicker - 20 years ago they had failures but medicine advances pretty quickly as we know but Footballer chose the old method

Would you recommend a hip replacement for an otherwise healthy 26 year old man just because it offered a quicker turn around?

interesting that I have had two opposition supporters say how they thought Ratten came over very well in that interview

one actually said he sounds like a triple premiership coach ... don't know exactly what he meant by that but is interesting how people outside a club can view things differently

That's good to hear. I hope it was from a Brisbane supporter rather than a St Kilda supporter!

Not even close with that analogy jimmae. Healy is certainly justified in questioning whether the AFL medicos are unreasonably conservative wrt ACL injuries.

I disagree. He's seen one success (and it's not even a long term success). I flicked through a considerable amount of journal articles on the subject after reading the Healy article. I'm not remotely convinced by the synthetics because they do not offer genuine opportunity for natural tissue to supplant the material inserted.

That tech is still in the works. It's more or less the same surgery from years back but with better suited material. The material can still fail, the individual's ligament suffers from creep as the material stresses and warps. He will have surgery again, whether it be in 2 years, 5 years or 20. No doctor should be offering this surgery purely for the turnaround time, because the long-term result is inferior to the traditional method. They're doctors, not mechanics; quality of life is an issue.

Everyone that I know that saw the interview thought the same....most being non Carlton supporters.

Some of the comments were

"unphased"
"focussed"
"knows what his milestones are"
"he's got a plan"

No matter what one does, it's easy to take pot shots.

Like accountants and economists, they can make numbers say what they want.

In Rattens defense: damned if you do, damned if you don't.
