Ive been calling Carlton the Blue Baggers all my life and at games normally yell 'GO BAGGERS' ahead of 'GO BLUES'.

Can someone confirm where the term 'Blue Baggers' originated from?

Ive been wondering for a while and cant figure it out.

My understanding is that there was a popular laundry product called (can't think of the brand name) ".....'s Blue Bag" which as I understand it you would put in the wash (ie the whole bag not just the contents) with your clothes. As to how it came to be transferred across to the Blues I can only speculate but I guess on one level the connection is obvious via the colour, perhaps there was also some suggestion of giving them a bath or somesuch ...

Strangely, the Blueseum which I would have thought would have an explanation doesn't seem to.

There is a story behind that dating back to the 1920's.

The Blue bags the team used for their personnel footy gear, were something like Bowling bags.

I'm sure there should be an article about it in the Blueseum...there is an article somewhere.

This question has been asked a few times before, but there has been nothing put on the Blueseum about it (AFAIK). Simply put no-one has given any evidence of the origin of the nickname.

The expression "Blue Baggers" derives from the laundry product used in all Australian households during and after WW2, called "Reckitts Blue"; which came in a small white muslin bag; and was put in the Copper or Washing Machine to whiten whites and brighten colours..........and were called "BLUE BAGS"........(sounds like a commercial!)

Yep.....my dear old Dad told me that on one of our many trips home from Princes Park one Saturday.

I woke up about 3 this morning with the name "Reckitt's Blue" on my mind (sad, I know). That is definitely the story behnd the term bluebaggers as I understand it.

I believe it refers to a number of supporters on this site.
Not entirely sure though....

Somewhere in Wikipedia it says there was an era where the Essendon* were once nicknamed "The bood stained niggers"........

not that wiki can be taken as gospel mind you...

Towards the end of Dick Reynolds tenure as coach of Essendon* they were derogatively known by their opponents as "The Gliders" as they were a very soft and didn't have much ticker.

Thanks Gavroman and Warby for the question and answer here. We've added it into a new page to hopefully start to track issues / questions like this and pre-empt any questions.

Happy to take any other suggestions.
