People can do what they want.......

Maybe the thread should be titled "Is it wierd that we judge people by how long they stay at footy games?"

If you leave early you hate your club, simple as that. :donk:

There are several strange little cults in AFL - that's one of them.

I left at the 15 minute mark of the last quarter in the 1993 Grand Final.

Did I REALLY have to sit through Essendon*'s celebrations at the final siren, to prove what a good supporter I was? Screw that - I literally RAN away from the ground, so I didn't have to hear their song play. Nearly made it too, but the wind was blowing towards the CBD that day.

And I'd do it again (but please god, don't let that happen ever again. I still have the scars).

Nah, got no problem with leaving early, but I hardly ever do. Like others, I buggered off during the last quarter a few times during the Pagan years, when it was clear that half the side didn't give a shit, and would've gone in for an early shower if given the chance. You can't expect supporters to stick it out when the players can't be bothered.

when I was young and foolish I used to judge people who left early and make statements such as 'you should never leave early'.

Now I am older and wiser, I have a child, my weekends are precious to me and I turn up to the game every week. Unlike some who might go to home games only but think they are a better supporter because they never leave early???

I don't do it often, but if the team is going through the motions and we are down by a fair amount then why should I stay?

I left early when hawthorn pumped us a couple of years ago and also the saints games that were just horrible. There is an art to doing it though, NEVER do it after an oppostion goal, I'd rather wait until we kick a goal, not as obvious then.

I don't leave early, but if I ever do I will walk out backwards so it looks like I am walking in.

I have switched off the TV in disgust while watching at home though.

I don't know how people can trudge past gloating, heckling opposition supporters while the game is still going on behind them, surely it's better to slink off after the siren while the other mob are jumping up and down jubilantly.

I've been known to leave the odd game early. Thanks Wojee for ascribing courage to my actions

I'm not proud of pissing off early, but sometimes the disappointment gets the better of me.

I left the dome at half time with a mate in the shameful North game, watched the rest in the comfort of the Colonial hotel and had a rueful laugh with a few full-strength pints. Don't regret leaving that one early.

I think the first game I left early was in 98ish when the Dogs smashed us at Optus. I felt guilty for a bit, but then thought "flower it - it's my weekend".

First time I did it was a gme the same season when we got flogged by Port Adelaide.

I don't do it often, but if we're playing like shit and its obvious we really haven't turned up that day...

The only game I can remember leaving early was the 1995 GF. Awful game!

Aside from that, I never leave early. As guttered as I may feel at the result, I am positive those blokes on the field feel worse than me. If they stay, I stay. I'm not in this just to celebrate the good times. I pay my membership every year to participate in the whole ride.

Hmmm... didn't see too many carlton supporters laughing and backslapping with their St Kilda counterparts after that loss. Saw a player doing it, though.

I think supporters take this stuff to heart far more than players do. Far more.

I remember leaving early twice in recent memory.

Once was at the G when it was 10 mins into the last and we had 2 goals on the board courtesy of McKernan. v Collingwood. Ugh.

St Kilda a couple of years ago in what was I *think* Jordan Russell's first game. He had little to do with it but it was shit.

I didn't watch the last minute of the freo game last week. So angry.

I don't think it's a huge sin if your team has put in a performance lacking in heart and effort. In the last few years I've rarely had that impression, just that we weren't up to it. I think staying to the end is about support, sure, but support is a two way street.

I respected our shit sides of the past 5 years because often they were on a hiding to nothing yet still went out there and regardless of what some more emotive posters may think, they wore our jumper with pride in our darkest hours. That was worthy of support. But I do remember on those 2 occasions feeling that effort and heart went out the window completely and rather than jump out of a window myself I went to the station.

Well said, Hammer. I can stand losing. I can stand (barely) being thrashed, if the players have tried their utmost. When the team turns up in body only and goes through the motions (think SCG 18 April 2009, for a start), that pisses me off.

I've left one match early. And it wasn't a Carlton match. Sydney v North, SCG a few years back. North were 15-odd goals gown. My North loving friends actually got a polite round of applause for lasting as long at the match as they did. North were truly appalling that day.

Forgive me TC for I have sinned.

For the first time ever, I left early.

I stayed when we were thrashed by Hawthorn by 100 points on the coldest night the year.

I stayed when we kicked 4 goals for the whole game against St Kilda and they were all by Fev.

I stayed when we were 48 points down by Essendon* in the second quarter - a good choice in hindsight.

But I could not sit through that display of stupidity that was put on display tonight. I figure if the side isn't going to show up after half time neither am I.

Hopefully the team-wide lobotomy can be reversed in time for next week's game. Or at least look like you are trying next time.

out on the full off of Lovett's boot and subsequent goal was the straw that broke this camel's back tonight. I don't do it often but I couldn't stand it any longer. If that makes me a bad person then so be it.

i have been going to the footy for 35+ years and have taken my son along since 2000 - and we NEVER left early - saying that it would make him appreciate wins more.

I was a blue coat at the 93GF and had to stand on the ground and watch a bunch of deadhead supporters sing that stupid song - for 20 minutes!!! No wonder i hate them all (and i live in that stupid suburb)

But i must confess - I left early for the first time tonight - i suppose its a sign of how disappointed i am feeling right now - thank goodness i'm off to QLD tomorrow for the week - at least i'll escape the post mortem.

Likewise

First time i've left early in a decade or so, that decision was just so wrong

Previously, I had only ever left a game early (about 3 times in my lifetime) when there has been less than 5min to go - at that stage it is literally to beat the traffic, both foot and vehicle.

Tonight was a massive record for me. I left at about the 7min mark of the last 1/4. I couldn't handle that insipid display any more. That was the most pathetic 2nd half effort I have seen from a Carlton side for as long as I can remember - and we've put in some pretty shit ones over the last 7 years.

I don't care what anyone says, I am not staying around to watch that shit.

havent ever left early and didnt leave early tonight, probably mostly due to the fact that we went with Essendon* supporters who owned the car we were driving in. But i dont have a problem with people leaving early. I god damn wanted to.

Im only 16 years old and most of my childhood ive been the root of school yard bullying due to the team i barrack for. Im telling you that of the games that Ive sat until the end to this is right up there with the best of them.

I think I was born in the wrong decade....
