Financials may stack up - but locking a minimum of 15,000 people out of Carlton games to play at Princes Park does not make any long term sense.

We have seen huge increases in our Membership since we stopped playing at Princes Park.

This is all designed to get us out of Etihad and to play the bulk of our games at the MCG.

Feasibililty study between $50,000 and $100,000 into PP as an AFL ground.

The guys at Docklands must be ROFLMAO-ing.

A 50k-100k feasibility study.

They want a one month crap shoot from a consultant.

It is not a real feasibility study, it's is bluff. Can someone tell me where the tender is for this? Would be easy money, the AFL do not really care about it, they basically want a document with a couple of dozen pages a few pictures a couple of graphs and the conclusion that PP could successfully hold AFL games and be a threat to the MCG and Docklands.

This is fun to watch.

It may be a bluff....most likely is a bluff....but it might not be, so is it worth the risk for the Docklands management to lose a lot of money based on what they assume is a bluff? The Docklands management shouldn't assume when the stakes are this high.


If it makes Carlton a richer club to play a few games at Princes Park I am all for it. I don't see why Collingwood and Essendon* should get an extra $100,000 minimum every time they play at Docklands.

I can tell you now that it is not a bluff.

If it comes back at a reasonable cost it will happen.

Carlton are very keen to play blockbusters at the MCG and interstate sides at PP. If this happens the MCG will adjust its deal with the Blues accordingly.

The amount of money involved is massive.

IMO I think it would be fantastic.

Knowing what we know about the money we don't make at ES and the money we have to pay out if we don't reach a certain level of attendance, I wouldn't be adverse to going back to PP.

A 25,000-27,000 seater holding 98% Carlton supporters on game day wouldn't be all bad.

A few years ago the AFL were super keen for us to move from PP and we had no choice as we were broke and the AFL were happy to let us sink if we did not go.

Noooowwww the clubs and the clubs find themselves scewed to the wall via dodgy deals the AFL encouraged, they have decided that PP may not be so bad after all.

Wheter or not it is a bluff remains to be seen, but you have to wonder about the nuffer/s in charge of the AFL.

How many seats have been pulled out for the development? The new building is about 2 metres behind the goals. That seems like it would be unusual.

If they can get it to work, and fit 25,000 in, it’s got to be a chance for playing against any interstate teams (like Caz said, 98% Carlton crowd ), and say a Melbourne for example. 7 home games seems one or two too many IMO.

The cost of the feasibility study is a bit wrong...well - a lot wrong - but the rest isn't a bluff at all. But it would be more like 4-5 home games a year there...I for one would be heavily in favor of this.

That sounds more like it. Using our fixture from this year as an example, I imagine we’d move the following games from the Dome/Carrara:

West Coast
Freo
Kangas
Adelaide
Melbourne

To move any more you’d be looking at moving games against the likes of Sydney, who draw a decent Melbourne crowd.

But unfortunately for the AFL, it's up to them (and not Dockland's management) to compensate the clubs for the appalling deals that the AFL oversaw.

Wayne Jackson and Andrew Demetriou have a lot to answer for.

AFL Games involving Carlton, Essendon*, Collingwood and an in form Richmond - can draw minimum crowds of at least 35,000+.

This fact alone shows how screwed up and flawed the AFL's stupidity in destroying and selling off Waverley -55,000 unencumbered seats (not including the AFL Members Reserve) - no booking fees, just walk up and enjoy - for Dockland Stadium that effectively locks people out.

Dockland Stadium - capacity of 55,000 - but very very very few walk up general admission seats - the place is designed to screw the last cent out supporters and clubs (except for Essendon*).

Here we are debating the return of games to Princes Park with a capacity of 25,000 (at best) - we have 40,000 members now.

The AFL should be eternally damned for what they did in destroying Waverley which was built on the contributions of the 12 clubs back in the 60s and 70s.

Now they realize too late what they have done - marginalized clubs into taking deals at Dockland which are slowly bleeding them dry.

Graeme Samuel has a lot to answer for in driving this train of events - he has no problem in having the average football supporter gouged in paying exhorbitant reserved seat prices at Docklands, paying $5 for a bottle of water that costs the caterer about 50 cents. Yet chased a man to his grave to add a few cents to the price of a cardboard carton. All so his investment fund mates could access the $80million cash from the sale of Waverley and build the ultimate peoples rip off at Docklands.

If it can hold 25-27,000 now they can find space for another 5-8,000. If it happens there is going to be some hurt for members without reserved seats? Maybe they can adopt the Hawthorn model for Tassie where some members can access games a small number of away games in Melbourne. Reserved seating membership is going to be out of the price range of a lot of Carlton people I imagine.
