It's a role no one really cares about, but at the same time it's a role that can't be taken lightly.

Stevens is no longer our best midfielder nor is he our most consistent or highly skilled. He seems to be a good communicator and is an accomplished person off the field, but when it comes to being second in command of a bunch of footballers you need more than a voice and flashes of brilliance. Work-rate, IQ, selflessness and respect are probably the categories that are most important in determining a team leader. At the start of 2007 he could very well have been number one in most of those categories, but that’s when Stevens was dealt a crippling blow, he’s never been the same since.

In my opinion Bryce Gibbs and/or Marc Murphy needs to be Vice Captain(s) of this club ASAP.
Obviously that won't happen this year, but I think it would be outstanding if one of them was awarded Vice Captaincy for next season.
To me, Gibbs seems like someone who can garner respect on and off the field from senior players and the younger ones. He is a selfless player as we have seen in the negating roles he is sometimes given. High football IQ, a keen learner, one of the more astute players in the league. I’m not sure how well he can communicate or how he’s like off-field, but if he can get the attention and the respect from the playing group it could only benefit the team.

Murphy is the more competitive one. He’s likely to inspire more with his work rate and persistent nature. Along with Judd, they’ve been the most consistent or more accurately, they have been the most consistently outstanding players on the team. There is no doubt Murphy has risen this year and with his skills and incredible instincts, players lift when they see one of their teammates turn an ordinary situation into a cracker that’s to be replayed over and over on all the footy shows.

I think the perfect situation would be Judd as Captain, Gibbs as Vice Captain and Murphy as the inspirational leader. Murphy could be that Ablett kind of player that demands high quality football.

You'd want to give this to a player who is consistently good. Probably Murphy but in a perfect injury free world I'd give it to Walker.

1 AW if he could get on the park, otherwise Murphy.
I also think Grigg could develop into a bit of a leader.
Anyone but our current bloke. :yikes:

It doesnt bother me, whichever one Jamison/Gibbs/Murphy/Kreuzer has the most respect from the players and the biggest commanding presence. Its up to the players.

Murphy or Waite.

Why isn't Waite on the list of choices?

Has probably been, with Judd and Murphy our most consistent player all year.

And is a blue at heart. he is a star now, has matured, and deserves AA.

Cannot be Simpson. He has been too up and down this year and is not elite.

Voted for the bloke we have now. I don't think it matters all that much - but I reckon Stevo does some things behind closed doors that a lot of us don't see. Yep - he's a receiver...so was Craig Bradley. You need them in the team...I still think he's our best bet kicking out from full-back and I think that role and running the wing would be more suited to him when Grigg and Walks come back in and relieve Gibbs of the silly role Ratts has him doing now.

Waite isn't in the leadership group, so it seems the team don't really think of him as someone with leadership material. Murphy and Gibbs aren't in there either, but they are almost sure things the next time they select a leadership group.

As it stands the Leadership Group contains, Judd, Stevens, Fev, Scotland, Carrazzo and Simpson.

That can't be right. Unless they put him in this year, which would be silly considering they decided he's not in our preferred Starting 22.

Let's face it Fisher is in there under the 'best cub man' type of inclusion. There's always one of these in the LG.

It is interesting Waite isn't in the LG.

From what I can gather, he isn't a piss head, trouble maker type. Has had no issues off the field that we know of.

So maybe he is a bit big headed, or doesn't train hard, or berates team mates.

More likely it might be that because he is experienced, the MC want him to address a few flaws in his game before he gets accepted into the LG.

If he wins AA selection, does he get in the LG? You'd have thought so.
