So it would seem selection errors continue. 'Fumbles' Bentley.... come on. Seriously, What the @#$%&! were they thinking? Today is without doubt the most devestating loss loss I have ever been at in 25 years of going to the footy. when fev took that mark i thought we had it. i still can't believe he hit the post  we were great today, but comments regarding our bottom 6 players are spot on.

Interesting how all these comments would have been had Fevs kick not hit the post...... so the ball shave the post and its all Rattens fault and if it had gone through?

If this and if that..... bla, bla, bla...... I am sure Carlton would win every game if one these "its all Rattens fault" super coaches would coach the team.

Just got back from the game.

Disappointed but not shattered. If we play like that every week we'll beat most teams and play finals I reckon.

Just one gripe. Why did Ratten persist with Thornton on Roughead? Seems to me Jamison was wasted today. The Thornton - Roughead matchup looked dodgy early on and I expected a move in the second quarter.

Maybe just one more. Hawthorn have 50K members, at least 20K of which know nothing about football, the continuous demands for a free at EVERY contest are Collingwoodesque.

i guess the thought was bentley has a longer kick than hads and a bigger body than robbo

but im guessing

bentley was poor today and he wasnt alone

we lost to a team who over the past few years has an average winning margin of 52 points against us and won last years flag

and we only lost be 4 and almost won

its not end of the world stuff and as long as ratten learns from this , then so be it

On a positive note i thought Bower was excellent today and Kreuze is slowly becoming my favorite player. His 2nd, 3rd and 4th efforts are fantastic.

Murphy is very close to becoming one of the elites. And i also thought Stevo played very well today.

I like Carrots playing foward.

I on the flip[ side Cloke had his worst game in 09. Needs to play out of the square not mobile enought to play up the ground.

Kruez will be one of the best rucks going around pretty soon, his ability to follow up is amazing. We struggled when he was off the ground. Hope Hammo goes well in the reserves tomorrow to give him some help next week and stretch Freo. Cloke needs a spell in the Ants

Just got home after a great game to watch. Awesome atmosphere and we nearly stole it.

Game was hard but scrappy and gave us probably the best indication of where we are at.

We are fantastic at the stoppages but our disposal is what stops us going further and it is a skill that can't be taught. IMO it was the difference.

For me it showed that our top level players in Judd, Murph, Gibbs, Fevola, Kruezer, Jamison, Waite are as good as anyone else in the comp. but for me we fall away badly after about player 12.

IMO guys like Wiggins, Russell, Bentley, Joseph, Carrazzo, Setanta, Cloke aren't up to it.

Doubts on Thornton, Armfield, Scotland & Houlihan.

They all have some good points but their weaknesses get shown up against the top sides. Quite simply our depth isn't near where it needs to be yet.

IT is a lot easier to break into the top 8 than it will be to break into the top 2 and hard decisions will again have to be made at years end.

The interesting one again is Stevens. Watched him today and he is VERY one paced or just lazy when the opposition have the ball. Looks great when he runs fwd of the ball and we win it but his efforts defensively were atrocious and cost us at least 2 goals directly. It is an argument that will go on but that is simply what I saw.

I thought Simpson tried hard today especially under duress and Gibbs seemed to spend a lot of time on the bench. Not sure if he was unfit or it was just rotations.

I will watch the Bullants tomorrow and guys like Austin, Anderson, Hadley, Yarran, Garlett, Bannister, Hampson, Browne, Robinson need to stand up.

I was A LOT more disappointed by the Essendon* loss than this loss !!!!!!!!!!!

WE LOST TO THE REIGNING PREMIERS BY 4 POINTS, AND FEV COULD HAVE WON IT.

I was SERIOUSLY thinking getting within 30 points would be a GREAT result, but almost snatching the win was FANTASTIC !!!!!!!!!!

Sure there were a number of things which could have resulted in a different resu;lt (Fev's kick, the unpaid 50 meter penalty, a couple of missed shots ala Murphy's snap in the last or Fev's earlier on when there was an extended delay for the blood rule) but they didn't.

If we play to the level that we did today then we WILL be in the top 4 at the end of the year (I was thinking 6-8 would be a FANTASIC result for the club).

And what about the improvement we still have to come !!!!!!!!!! Setanta is better at CHF IMO than Cloke. If Hampson plays well tomorrow then Cloke hits the Ants IMO, and Setanta is used as a presence in the forward line.

Hadley and Grigg didn't play, and would be walk up starters in out best 22

Browne and Anderson would be VERY close to selection sooner rather than later

and then we still have Yarren, Garlett and Robinson in the works

God I have HIGH hopes for the future !!!!!!!!!!!

i would have thought when i heard of his selection he would be used around the stoppages and as a long kick to break the zone

it didnt come off and bentley showed he probably doesnt have the skills to match that plan

it failed

hopefully we learn and as i said id be suprised if he plays next week

learn and move on

I understand what you are to say but with that in mind is it something that he was capable of doing better the Had's or Robbo?

Ratten is the head coach he gets paid the big bucks to make these decisions and as seen as i saw the teams on Thursday night i knew if we lost it would be because we wouldnt have enough contributors and that's the way it turned out.

If you going to take these sorts of gambles on player make the against bottom 8 sides not the reigning premiers. We could have nipped this "bogey side" issue in the butt today but we failed to do so.

Bentleys selection didnt cost us the game.

We have to be better than than umpires, odd selections and the other team. TOday we were close but when things are that close you are leaving it chance.

We are a growing side. We played against a team and game style that usually kills us but today we tweaked the game a bit
took them on and lost. We will be better next time and the time after that.

I am stoked with today but feel sad for Fev.

I had just got home from the game and was keen to read what other people thought about the last quarter. I'm surprised to see as much negativity as there was.

Hawthorn are last year's Premiers and we took it right up to them. Even when they were four goals in front, twenty minutes into the last quarter. Armfield in the center. Joseph at half-back on Rioli. Bower beat Franklin, he beat him. Jamison Bloody Kreuzer. Sure the stars were alight but it was much more of a team effort than it seemed. Greg Bentley might not have been the greatest selection but at least it was a role of the dice. Probably shouldn't have turned around and screamed 'oh, they know we're coming' and pumping both fists to the Hawthorn supporters behind us before realizing Fevola missed.

But for the last seven or eight years Carlton has lost against better teams and it's been unbearable, it's been frustrating, it's been hopeless, it's been heartbreaking, but rarely if ever has it been as gallant as it was today.

I was proud of my football team, proud of my sport too.

Go Blues!

Great game. We could be 6/0. Will play finals. We are coming...

Cameron Cloke is going. We will NEVER win a flag with him playing. His only value is giving a superstar in the big Kruise a chop out in the ruck. That is ALL is he good for.

Anyone heard that Fev has a broken nose?

In an article in the HS about Fev's heartbreak it says:

Quote:
Fevola, who suffered a broken nose in the second term,

I wouldn't be surprised ............ He copped a pretty heavy hit to the face/nose due to the follow on of a Hawks defender during a spoil. Nothing really in the insident, but Fev was in a bit of trouble afterwards and there was some blood (prob a little less than you would expect from a broken nose ........)

Here I am on the sideline at soccer, headphones in the ears, Fev takes the mark, I've jumped and yelled, everyone looking at me weird, BT calls it a goal, I jumped again, then the others say it hit the post :banghead:

Before the game I thought we would lose by 6-7 goals as Hawthorn have us mentally, tonight we proved we can beat them, on the downside we are 3-3, i had us 4-2, we need to string some wins together to seperate us from the pack.

Our percentage again hasn't taken a hit, this is a massive pro, although in the ideal world wins would've been gold.

I'm shattered.
Didn't see much of the game as we had guests but managed to sneak a few peeks.
Saw the last 2 minutes and almost hit the roof when Fev marked and still haven't recovered from the miss. I know he didn't lose us the game and heard on the news he got 8. Great effort but he didn't win us the game either when he had the chance. If you get paid $500K per year to kick goals you should get the ones from 20 odd metres out. He will practise that kick at training this week and kick it 100 times in a row. Interesting article by Jake Niall on Fev just at the right time.
We are now officially back in the pack of 3-3 when we might be 5-1 or even 6-0 with some straight kicking.
Good to hear the reports from those who were there but disappointed to think CJ69 reckons 11 of our best 22 are below standard. The other 11 must be bloody good.
Bring on next week.

At the game thats the closest ive been to crying ( im 30yrs old mind you ).... BUT after calming down on the way home and thinking about it more... Hawks are a very good team... and the blues of old would have packed it up once we were 25 points down with 8 minutes or whatever to go. We kept coming and should have won... Fev was unlucky, without him today we lose by 50 + pts, so its not his fault.

Too many crucial skill errors, over running of footy's, people going to ground and not staying in the contest.

Bentley wasnt good, but if he was playing well in the Ants he deserved a go... you need to reward blokes that play well in the ants. We have good players to come back... Grigg, Hadley, Mitch... to name a few.

I am SUPER PROUD of the Blue boys!

Having said that i EXPECT 2 wins in the next 2 weeks... Freo and Collingwood, and if we are fair dinkum theres no reason why we cant beat Adelaide at AAMI

GO BLUES
