The interesting thing is that this version of the meeting with Pratt differs substantially from the one that was told when Pratt became President.

If you recall, Jack came out and said then that he suggested to Sticks that he go to Pratt. And the story went that Sticks pleaded with him to take the presidency. It was a feel good story at the time - Pratt came back to the club at the behest of one of our greatest former players.

Now, it looks like Sticks was Elliott's sidekick, and neither suggested nor sought Pratt's direct involvement. Pratt didn't need to be begged to take over - he suggested that himself.

That's an interesting contrast. Some might think it suggests that Elliott might not be the most reliable historian.

At the time, I suggested that the version that gave Sticks the credit for bringing Pratt to the presidency might have been spin. But both at the time and now, I don't have a problem with that. All clubs and organisations need such uplifting stories, whether or not they are entirely accurate. As the old saying goes, even if it wasn't true, it should have been.

Great story ! I do recall Syners posting this version about a year or so back.

Get over it and be greatful for the pair of them - both truly great Carlton men

I've sat at Jack's table in his office and a more genuine and helpful bloke in private I have rarely met.
The Jack you hear at functions is the public one.
There is a big difference between Normn Gunston and Gary Macdonald so if you have heard Norman speak, please don't knock Gary for what Norman says.

If you think it is OK to profit from the death of a good friend then all power to you. I don't really swing that way and find it to be quite weird.

The stories I want to hear are the ones about Richard Pratts first entry into the club after becoming President:

- ordering new carpets
- ordering new office furniture
- ordering new painting
- ordering new gymnasium equipment

the phone call to Greg Swan - the first discussion with Chris Judd.

The HOW is an interesting story - but its the WHAT that has made the difference.

There is one difference in how we recovered. Lots of clubs have lots of
people around with lots of money. Including us.
As we have seen, the egos come to the fore, and the main purpose of these people is their own self interests.
The difference here was that Dick Pratt knew how to organise, and his main interest was Carlton.
The money was very handy, but the way Dick ran things was to bring his beloved Carlton back, and to make sure, as far as possible that everyone was working for Carlton, not for themselves.
He had a wealth of experience, as well as wealth, and had seen the inner
workings of Business, and Football clubs, and knew that the right people make all the difference. The wrong people destroy the club.
Last year we only played reasonably, but the change in the feeling around the club showed that we were on the way back.
Dick was the perfect person to get.

Hey Agro, are you the 'Matt' who placed the death notice in the Hun today?

It reads...........

Quote:
PRATT. — Richard.
Great C.F.C. man and saviour of
our famous Club. Maybe ACCC
Chief Samuel will now apply the
same energy he did to Dick Pratt
to our petrol and supermarket
companies. Go Blue Boys,
do it for Dick this weekend.
— Matt, a one eyed Carlton
supporter.

And Wes reckons it was him who asked Dick to be President...

Sticks, Jack, Wes...

Whomever's idea it was it doesn't really matter.

Thanks to all three for approaching him and especially thanks to Dick for taking on the job.

You've missed the point GWS. Dick wanted the presidency all along (fortunately for us), and the approaches were merely formalities. He was no wallflower waiting for someone asking him to dance. Remember, he was the one who called Sticks and others to the meeting at which he announced he wanted to be President. You just have to see how he went about it when he became President to know he had his mind made up well before anyone came to see him.

I think it is nice that there's a bit of confusion surrounding this. Really, this great club deserves to be shrouded in the league of urban mythology.

People can argue about this til kingdom come, in bars and pubs, at dinner parties, in the outter.

Thoughts go out to Jack. He would be missing a good mate. Sounds like they had some great times together in business and being involved with our great club.

Chin up Elliott and i hope the Blues have a great season for Pratt and yourself.

For once we're not in the minority Agro.

When a Prime Minister so hell bent on being everyone's mate he gives away money thinks you're a flower then there must be something to it.

Your time is coming, Samuel.

The thing that concerns me about Jacks version of the story is this. It was his persistant and very active undermining of the club once he was ousted. There is no doubt that his actions in stirring up trouble was a major contribution to the very nasty civil war that went on for a number of years and severly hampered any efforts to improve our position. Rather than get behind the new regime he was determined to destroy it and reclaim the club for himself. His actions were motivated purly from self interest and an attempt by him to regain the Presidency with Pratts backing, fortunatly for us Pratt decided to take the Presidency for himself. And I suspect Pratt did this out of a pure love of the club and respect for Sticks rather than any influence Jack may or not have had.
