You've gotta agree that it worked out rather well for us, heh.

Tee hee...however, does anyone know if there was interest shown before the preseason draft from any other club? :?

I had a chat to Eddie when the Blues played in Darwin a couple of years ago. We caught up 'cos one of his mates is the son of one of my old school friends. Eddie said that Carlton and a couple of other sides had chatted to him before the draft but the Blues were the only side to indicate that he would be selected in the rookie draft.

For years he has got by on his abundant natural talent. Now he has his improved fitness to take him to the next level. Stints Onball are not that far away.

Everyone talks about how opposition team "X" is going to match up on Fevola each week ... I honestly believe Eddie's a far harder match up than Fev in our forward line because of the way he plays. Can't stop that freakish reading of the play and full commitment to the ball, even if you get goalside of him, he's got a wicked step and is very evasive.

..what strikes me as his biggest weapon is his ability to take a mark out front, while sprinting hard at the ball.. ..he hardly ever drops a mark that way, and his ability to dish off the handball accurately to the runner streaming past is exceptional as well.. ..some of the quickest hands on our team..

All of the above is good but there's more.

If you wtach where he runs when Fev has the ball (from a mark) he is aware of Fev's heel (the injections) and his conversion percentage.

He places himself in front on Fev at speed so if a hand ball is coming he is prepared for it and is heading to goal.

This is not Bartlett goal hunger but the sign of a good team player - who wants to hurt the opposition on the score board.

If the ball does not come to him there is no response, no Richo hissy fit.

His fitness is improving - he now plays all 4 quarters.

Just imagine what the forward line would be like with Kreuzer, O'hailpan, Betts and a fit Fevola, Garlett and Yarran. Delivery of the ball into the forwards would come from Houlihan, Gibbs, Murphy, Judd, Scotland and Stevens. This would be a combination of speed, marking ability and skill. There is the potential to play in September if this playing group can keep on the park.

If he can kick 50 plus this year it takes pressure off Fev and gives defences something to think about other than Fevola. We need one more up forward to step up and produce 40 odd. Yarran??? lets hope so.

Unlike his full-forward teammate. Fev's response to Cloke kicking a goal was bloody awful.

Last year, when the family traveled down for a game we went to training prior, some of the boys stayed behind for a long time doing autographs etc, my young son was chasing players for a signature on his Carlton strip and Eddie was just fantastic with him in comparison to the other players (perhaps with the exception to Fev , who was great also).

We came away from the session with a new respect for Eddie and we are over the moon he is in such good form, my son has number 6 on his jumper but now wants Eddie and tries to copy him now in the under 9's.

If he kicks 50+ goals this year , it is possible he could be AA.

we have many mids who can do the job there but how many of our mids can be as dangerous as Eddie up fwd and provide the same defensive pressure ?

Until our other small forwards develop Im not sure its a great idea to move him up the ground except for short impact bursts when we need a change up.

Has anyone noticed the way Eddie pulls the ball down fast as soon he marks overhead to avoid a spoiling fist....nobody else running around seems to do this.

With another quick fwd applying tackles EB will get even more balls spill his way ..... talent to burn....and still has upside with his fitness levels

Whenever he gets near the ball you can feel the excitement of the crowd swell because they know that something amazing almost always happens when he's in the action.

Love the way he plays and with his improved consistency this year he's going to prove a headache for oppostion coaches.

Overhead brilliant, but far more brilliant is his ability to run to a 50-50 ground ball use his strength to pop it behind him and jump straight up, grabbing the ball before leaving the opposition player in his wake. I don't know how to better explain this skill, but it's something I do not see other players do. He has been consistantly brilliant this year.

Some others for comparison:

* Brett Backwell never averaged above a goal a game in his short stint:

* One user remembered Ron De Iulio as a forward before moving back to defence, and whilst he averaged over 1 a goal in his early days his time in defence brought down that average markedly (70 odd from 100 odd games):

Another thing this year has been his ability to consistently be front and square of the contest, in exactly the right spot, and consistently hitting that spot now with pace. He has an instinctive football brain.

Betts has achieved a personal best for goal kicking with his 2 last night, taking it to 27 from 12 matches.

http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-index.php? ... 3A+E+Betts

A top year already, Betts could possibly get 40-50 goals this year which would be an outstanding outcome for a small forward.
