revamp caulder park raceway into an afl stadium.. they have the land for parking, trainline runs right behind it, should be able to fix up the roads to handle the flow of traffic. bingo.

I don't like the idea of putting a ground out there or at the Showgrounds - apart from the fact it's on the wrong side of town for me can't help but feel it would be good for the Bombers, ipso facto bad for Carlton.

I agree... Give 'em nuthin.

Very interesting article in the Age today highlighting that Melbourne FC lose money if they do not exceed 20,000 spectators.

They got a paltry 14,000 against the Crows this weekend which is high for rugby league but a real loser in the AFL.

They lost $50K from this game and have lost ample $$$ since 2004 when they consistently have attracted crowds below 20,000 and has become the norm against interstate teams.

Melbourne fans were the one of the teams who were up in arms about playing at Princes Park because they couldn't get more than 17,000 to PP for their interstate games.

Well now we know, it wasn't just the parking issue which deterred Demons fans to PP, that was an excuse; it's obvious now that it was the club who couldn't attract them.

Well we know about the story about the boy who cried 'wolf'.

So the moral to the story is that you can go and suck $hit if that's what you want to throw around.

There's no doubt that an increasingly popular footy code with an view to increase the number of clubs playing in the major league was going to need a boutique stadium; Prines Park/ Visy Stadium was the answer and it was there under their noses.

The AFL cut their nose to spite their face. Pathetic Politics.

Pity he was a complete and utter knob .

Actually he is a good bloke and is very free with his time. He has done a lot for an event Blue Beatle is involved with and has enticed a lot of high profile people to help out for nothing.
Say what you like about him as president of Carlton but as a bloke he is worth more than a throwaway line from an anonymous poster on TC.

The cabal of Graeme Samuel (who has gone on to distinguish himself greatly  ), Wayne Jackson and Ron Evans - really did all they could to ensure that Carlton's redevelopment did not impact on their maniacal desire to ensure the creation of Dockland Stadium.

It was indeed pathetic.

I like the idea of a 35k stadium at the Showgrounds. It'd be great for teams like North Melbourne and the Bulldogs vs. teams like Freo, Port, etc etc etc.

It's easy to get to on Public Transport too and will probably take DOUBLE the profits than what they would at the dome or the G.

Regardless of wether you like them or not, these teams are in trouble financially and DESRVE to be in the AFL!

Hmm, gets we thinking...the current situation of only 2 stadia in Melbourne is certainly anti-competitive, and an argument can be made that what we're currently seeing involves cartel-like collusion. Must have been another Graeme Samuel who pushed so hard for ground rationalisation.

Graeme Samuel was Chairman of the Olympic Park and Docklands Authority whilst he was on the AFL Commission at the time of the decision to build the stadium at Docklands - not just anti-competitive behaviour.

Footy Classified mentioned that the AFL will perform a feasbility study on bringing back Visy Park as an AFL venue.

Probalby AFL just throwing a jab at the existing grounds but jeez this would have to come up just as our redevelopment nears completion :banghead:

It's grandstanding (excuse the pun).

Pissing in the wind to be more accurate.

There is zero chance of PP being transformed into an AFL venue.

a) Carlton would have to hand over the lease (relinquish PP as Carlton's home ground). Yeah right!
b) The AFL would have to magically turn it into a stadium that makes a profit from 20,000 people while providing AFL standard facilities. The reason the profitable crowd was about 15,000 under Elliot's reign is that the facilities provided were third world. No way in the world PP can be turned into a stadium that would be a profitable. Especially being a north-south stadium.

The goals run East-West but you're right it's really just piss and wind from the AFL to make it look like they would consider Princes Park. You would never get AFL/Demetrispew backtracking on this one - too much egg on face.

Sorry AGRO, but the goals are North-South.

Spent many a day in the standing room staring into the sun trying to work out what was happening at the Heatley stand end in the winter.

? Sitting behind the goals at the Legends Stand end the afternoon sun is right in your eyes. The sun sets in the west. Therefore...

I am interested in why the orientation of the ground matters so much anyway?

Its one of the major reasons why the Legends Stand was so unpopular - because of the appallinginly shallow angle of the seats people would be looking directly into the sun as it set over the Heatley Stand in the West.

If the sun setting is a problem - I've got a good idea - why not kick the game off and 1hour or so earlier so them when the game finishes the setting sun isn't a problem
1.00 oclock game on a Sunday sounds a good idea then they could play the twilight at docklands .
If the AFL feel the need to get a third stadium - PP would be the obvious choice

Announced today on radio that the State Government will spend $2 million on a feasibility study for another AFL stadium at Docklands.
