Won't ever happen, once people have to get two forms of transport grounds become hard to get to. The dome is on Spencer St station and has every tram in Melb at its door. The G has Richmond station thru which many trainlines run, Jolimont for several other trainlines and 2 tram lines.
I loved going to PP but loved it far less after the absurd Elliot stand with its seating for about 20 was built and less again when the Legends stand with its double dip charges was built over the wonderful scoreboard hill. Those buildings cost it the genuine suburban Saturday footy atmosphere it used to have. (Not too mention the debt that almost destroyed the club and that we are still carrying).

The great days of PP were gone well before we left there, and I really like the Dome. And when other clubs had to play non Carlton games there, they hated it and no-one went. For the old days I'd still love to play a couple of games there agaisnt Freeo and WCE and Port but hardly worth the maintenance effort for a couple of games, particularly when we can make a fortune from playing Freeo on the GC.

And even if you make as much for 20,000 at PP as 40,000 at the dome, it is kore about hearts and minds. We want as many people as possible at Carlton games so we continue being important, getting supporters who go and support us, creating atmosphere selling members tickets.

And really, how many non members went to PP? All the members have already paid to get in, we have their money, how much would we get from non members when we were lucky to get half our paid up members there.

Lavish!

I'd get up into the press area and sneak my brother in - best seats in the house IMO.

So instead of asking "why did you find it difficult getting to Princes Park?" you respond with "boo hoo".
One would think that as Carlton supporters we'd like to encourage our fellow supporters in getting to games, apparently not.

Was it so difficult?

I don't live in the country, but half the time I used to drive there, and get a parking spot with little trouble at the Zoo. A nice 10 minute stroll and I was in the social club.

The other times, I jumped on a tram which dropped me at PP's front door. The Elizabeth Street tramstops would be a four block walk from Spencer St Station, if you're coming in by train.

How is this much more difficult than a country-dweller getting themselves to the MCG?

Honestly, I never understood all the bitching and moaning from supporters about how hard it was to access PP.

Battling Sydney Rd or Brunswick Rd after a couple of hours in the car then not being able to find a park within 30mins walk of the ground makes it difficult. Not being familiar with the tricks to getting a park nearby obviously wouldn't help, I have no relatives interred at the cemetary, and don't know anyone who lives across the road to let me use their garage. Parking in the city then catching a tram isn't an attractive option when you're driving to avoid using public transport.

The MCG admittedly wasn't that much easier to get to before the ring-road dropped you at the end of Flinders St, but parks were easy to find either at the ground or in one of the many parking places nearby.

The Dome may lack the character of Princes Park, but even the most vocal PP advocate has to admit that it's a helluva lot more accessible. It's Freeway for all but the first 20km plus the few k's through Nagambie from my front door to where the ring road exits at the Dome.

My opinion is
Even IF it were feasible to have PP as the 3rd ground it will NEVER happen as long as Demitrispew is in charge coz he friggin hates Carlton and nothing we say or do will change his self-serving opinions/decisions.

By the way I drove from Geelong every week to PP and I didn't have any probs with parking. (It may have helped that I have a disabled permit on my car. )

You actually didnt need any relatives interred in the cemetery - I only realized after all these years after Dad passed away that anyone could drive into the cemetery and park there all day - you still can.

The Legends Stand would have to have been the worst place to watch football in Victoria. Rarely full enough to have atmosphere, most of which was dissipated by the ridiculously shallow camber of the stand. I always felt miles from the action - had no idea what was happening at the Social Club end. Not to mention that the sun was always directly in your eyes during a game. Should never have been built once the council refused the permit for a two tier stand. Utter disaster and as responsible as any CFC decision for putting us in the mess it's taken us a decade to emerge from. And don't get me started on that scoreboard - was it $2 million? How can you blame visiting supporters for being unimpressed.

The Pratt Stand was always great, whether standing on the terrace near ground level on the wing or sitting in a seat in the stand, always a sensational view with great atmosphere.

This column that Wacko Jacko wrote for the Herald-Sun in 1998 was really a disgraceful justification piece for Docklands and had no place being published in a Newspaper.

I think I still have it somewhere - but in particular the sentence where he attacked the media who had dared speculate that "catering and parking will cost more at Docklands" showed just how out of touch Senior Football Executives are - catering in particular has been a rip-off at AFL Venues in particular when Spotless Catering got there thieving mits on venues.

Now why didnt Graeme Samuel ever take Spotless Catering to task over their price gouging monopolies at AFL Venues.

Oh thats right he was looking after his good mate Ron Evans.

But back to the point - Wayne Jackson in a small minded piece of vengeful idiocy allowed his hatred of John Elliott to get in the way of good business by ensuring that Princes Park could never be allowed as that valuable piece of back up insurance when the AFL sold off Waverley.

You need a trainline (Maybe even an express from Footscray)

You need major roads - Eg. Dandenong Road & Monash Freeway

You need parking

You need money to build it

You need to be South East, but not too far out of the city.

You need experience.

So is the Melbourne Racing Club missing an opportunity.

Land is available at Sandown Park (Why not rebuild the trots track) or Caulfield that could be used to build a nice 25000-40000 seat stadium.

A Stadium would add to the viability of either race track. MRC needs to find something to take it to the VRC.

What do people think?

Caulfield would be an ideal spot for an AFL ground, but there's no space for one there - are you suggesting the track be shared with the AFL ground?

I'd be all for the AFL buying the course off the Melbourne Racing Club or reconfiguring the track to make it smaller to accommodate an AFL ground, but can't see that happening. I don't give a rat's about racing but I know a couple of people who wouldn't be happy :smoking:

I read somewhere that racing is really struggling outside the spring carnival. Is that correct? If so maybe it's time racing in this state underwent some "ground rationalisation" of it's own.

Seems strange that we have 2 AFL venues in this city but 3 or 4 major racing tracks when AFL is much more popular. The Caulfield Cup could be run at Moonee Valley. Carlton doesn't play in Carlton anymore. Looking at the Wikipedia page, only 2 Group 1 races are currently held at Caulfield during footy season proper, and those are in September.

I know Carlton would get good crowds at Caulfield  Hmm, this idea makes more sense the more I think about it!

Sunbury probably wouldn't be a bad place to put a stadium. On the Calder, just down the road from the airport. Of course it wouldn't be easy for people on the other side of the city to get to. Birthplace of the ashes, could probably host some domestic cricket games during the summer.

The chief merit of that idea is that Sunbury is near Romsey :donk: J/K

I don't like the idea of putting a ground out there or at the Showgrounds - apart from the fact it's on the wrong side of town for me can't help but feel it would be good for the Bombers, ipso facto bad for Carlton.

yeah i'm East also.............but thinking about "space".............Caulfield would
