Yep - I love Carlton...I'm not convinced they love me back - but as others have said...it's in the blood. Nothing I can do.

My love for Carlton has been greater....when I was a kid it was all I cared about...going to a game at Princes Park was what I lived for - winning was everything and something we did quite well; and even in the 80's I'd analyse the game, critique it in the car on the way home and provide a summary to Mum while she was cooking dinner that Saturday night.

I wrote letters to David Parkin and when on a holiday to Europe in 1982, aged 8 - sent him a postcard from France stating that 'while the Eiffel Tower was very impressive, it just didn't have the atmosphere of the Gardiner Stand on a Saturday afternoon'. Mr Parkin would often write back. The club valued it's supporters like never before. There wasn't much infighting among supporters - we left that to the club - safe in the knowledge that this club had survived on infighting and coups that would often bring about more sustained success for the club we loved.

Nowadays I go to training sessions from time to time...mostly in order to relive greater days, when the crowd was jammed in like sardines to see their heroes on display, when the men in front of us would quickly drink their cans of beer before half time in the seconds and give them to me to stand on so I could see. I still remember Frank, Tom and Leo...the old doormen (now departed) of the club who along with Dad would challenge me to 'just watch Bruce Doull - don't worry about where the ball is - just watch Doull'.

I can hear it still....especially when it comes out of my mouth as I say to a youngster 'watch Judd - don't worry where the ball is - just watch Judd'. Luckily Juddy, like the Flying Doormat, is easy to spot!

On Monday I turn 35. I don't feel 35 in any other aspect of my life other than when it comes to following Carlton. I wonder if anyone else my age or older feels the same? The supporter gives emotionally, financially and does so because they care - because they love the simple things about the club. For me - it's the jumper, the history, the memories...

These days, I mostly go to games by myself. While my father gave me the opportunity to love Carlton, he's no longer interested in going to the MCG or Docklands or listening to the people around him - or watching the game as it's played today. He'll watch it on TV...but will rather watch his old side Williamstown run around.

I'll always love the Blues. But I'm waiting for Premiership 17...just holding out for one more before I walk away. The game and the club have changed. Neither for the better and no one can convince me otherwise. Just let me savor one more Premiership...you'll still find me down at Princes Park, at the odd game, or bidding against me on eBay for Carlton memorabilia pre-dating 1982, but the love is slowly waning...

POW

I'm the same age, and this sums up being Blue for me. Great post.

Before the last election, when the club was tearing itself to shreds, I posted this:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=14444

Sums up why I love Carlton, and puts perspective into what the great Richard Pratt has done for all of us.

Some very good reading from both Doc and Deano there

Sometimes, you have to put all the crap behind you (and by crap I mean the AFL 'industry' and its associated hangers-on and overpaid executive 'talent') and remind yourself of why you still bother.

Thanks lads.

Reading it back myself, reminds me of how I felt typing it.

The club was f$#@ed, we were staring down the barrell. Cue Richard Pratt, and look at us now.

There's just no way we fans can ever repay him.

I spent the first 8 years of my life living on Brunswick Rd (just an Ang Christou drop punt from Princes Park), and then moved to East Brunswick. Went to Princes Hill Primary School and about 80% of the kids followed Carlton. Gerald Burke (the old Carlton secretary) would pop in every few weeks and bring us footies to use.

In 1962 and 1963, and old guy called Jack who had some kind of 1930s black car, used to pick me up every Tuesday and Thursday and take me to training - I was 9 and 10. He'd talk to his old mates and I'd chase balls and autographs. I'd then go into the rooms and sit and talk to Peter Barry, Jim Carroll (Turkey Tom's cousin) and Serge Silvagni - I was always too scared to say boo to big John. He once walked by bare footed and I was wearing those old style big black footy boots. He accidentally stood on my toe and it hurt for weeks .......

In 1964, I had a Carlton jumper with the number 1 on my back, and a duffel coat with 2 Herald badges - one on each sleeve. One was the Carlton emblem/logo (SERIF!!!!) and the other was a cloth photo of the captain - Silvagni!! And I went to my first game at Princes Park with my dad (his first and only game) - Carlton vs Collingwood. A draw.

I went to a few games in 1965 and 1966, and then bought my first membership (Junior) in 1967. So my first REAL game, as a MEMBER, going not as a little kid (I was 14) was Round 1 1967 - Carlton vs Fitzroy. Jezza's first game. I think it was Brian Kekovich's first game, and it might have even been Perce Jones' first game. And then my going to the footy full-time coincided with Carlton's greatest era. Was I lucky or what??!! 8 premierships in the next 27 years!!! One every three and a half years!!!

And every game, standing behind the goals at the Heatley Stand end, provided something special. New players like Crosswell, Jackson, McKay, Doull, Johnno, Buckley, Sheldon, Fitzie's first game, Buzz's mark, Walls kicking 10 against Richmond - unbelievable. The record score against Hawthorn (30.30.210) where Jezza kicked 7, Perce kicked 6, Crosswell kicked 4 from the wing in one quarter.

And then those amazing away games. Windy Hill in 1974 or 75 when we kicked 14 goals in the 2nd quarter, games at Moorabbin where we always SMASHED the Saints, Jezza's first game as coach at Victoria Park where we beat the filthy ferrals, Jezza's 100th goal at the MCG, where I ran onto the ground with 1000s of others, the 1970 GF. Wow, where to stop?

Even the losses were memorable. Neale Daniher (hate him with a passion, even though he's probably a good bloke), Neil Balme (hate him with an even greater passion, even though I have friends who know him well and say he's a good bloke).

And then throughout the 1990s thru July 2000, I lived in the USA. I watched the 1993 GF (on a Friday night over there) with a mate and almost reached through the TV to strangle Long. And then I watched the 1995 GF (with the same mate) and showed him what Aussie footy was really like!!!!! And every season, I'd scour the channels to find some Carlton games, but whenever anyone came to visit from Australia, I always got the same things - a jar of Vegemite, a jar of Rosella pickles, some packets of Fruit pastilles, and about 10 giant VHS tapes with Carlton games, Footy Shows, panels, you name it. And then I'd be in heaven for the next few nights eating my Aussie food and watching the Blues on TV. And in 2000, I found some internet thingy where I could actually listen to bits of games, and heard some of the Kouta magic. Boy, great memories,

Why do I love Carlton? God, I could could fill a book. I've been through the ups and downs. I endured Walls leaving, Jezza leaving. I've already endured so much internal fighting - when I started, Ken Hands was the coach. I endured the 70s - 1973 through 1978, when we had the best players but were too scared to win. And now I've endured the 2002-2007 years and watched hacks go around for the club, and seen players like Fev and Houla and T-Bird and Waite give their all for the club and still get lambasted because their all wasn't good enough.

Why do I love Carlton? Because just wait and see what happens in the next 5-10 years. Guys, as Al Jolson said - "You aint seen nothing yet!!!!"

This group Juddy, Murph, Gibbs, Kreuze, Fev, Waite, Simmo, Tex, Eddie, etc - they're as good as any we've seen. And they're gonna give us no 17, 18, and 19 in the next little bit.

Why do I love Carlton??? BECAUSE I DO!!! (And flower the rest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Hi my name, Slim Rafalution and I love Carlton.....

.. VCE involved filling out spreadsheets of Carlton stats I noted while listening to the ABC broadcast on radio.
.. VCE involved memorising every players height, weight, games played, goals kicked. I was so addicted people use to track me down at school to settle arguments about players.
.. I went to school with a couple of the Sextons, I idolised Mick so much I think I would of had him sign something 20-30 times at a guess.
.. My Mum played State Netball with the Dominators first wife, I was always asking when can we go and visit, as I got older I always asked how the kids are, any good at footy? Never asked for a signature now that i think of it :donk:
.. I love Carlton so much I attended Carlton vs Collingwood games by catching the Collingwood supporters bus from Bendigo as Carlton didn't have one. Can thank Nafan Brown for nearly getting us kicked off.
.. I have something Carlton with me every breath i take
.. I love Carlton because they are Navy Blue
.. I love Carlton because I watched the Blues Brothers over 1000 times as a kid
.. I love Carlton because we are arrogant and confident

Most of all I love Carlton because YOU KNOW WE'RE COMING!!

Thanks Doc for the AA invite! Deano, can I share something with you....I read your seminal post two years ago(?) and I was moved; at that stage, I was despairing- we were crap and we were fighting everybody about being, well, crap (I guess). My work colleagues knew , to get a rise out of me, just taunt me about Carlton and watch him go! And the worst offender was a diehard Essendon* supporter- kept laughing at me about our anticipated rise. So, one night, after I'd finished a shift, I went on TC and came across your post, Deano- so thanks for your inspiring account! :thanks:

Well, why do I love Carlton? I didn't really follow CFC through boarding school (from 6 to 8- school for the deaf in Ballarat), although i'd hear it in the background. My love for Carlton took off during '77 and I remember being sickened as I watched the highlights of Collingwood's 102 point humiliation- and Doully was BOG! From halfway through '78 through to '81, I strutted around school as part of the Navy Blue brethen- and Collingwood supporters learnt to loathe me (but not touch me! :fight: ) and I'd reminded them of their one useful purpose- being Carlton's bitches! Even when I lived OS and in London, I went to Australia House and followed the fortunes of Carlton through the papers (before the internet) and as the had a pinboard display of the latest scores from the weekend- and I danced like a lunatic when I discovered we'd beaten the Bummers at PP for the first time in 5 years, by 52 points (if you don't mind!)- Rd 18, 1985. Carlton has sustained me like not many interests can (apart from my family, that is); the flags, my brothers (all four of us follow the mighty Bluebaggers); the horror of '93; the sheer joy of '99; and reading all and sundry on TC. I love all the contribution each of you have made; however, I want to make special mention to some posters who kept me laughing and smiling during the bleak days of 2002 to 2007- Agro, Synners, Deano, DUC, Doc Sherrin and Blueman. Just when I'd lose hope, you guys I'd read to make some sense of what was going on. So, many thanks- and what a great family you all are!

Finally, it is the players I have followed over the years- Sticks, Braddles, Doully, Gags, Big Nick, Syd Jackson, Kouta, Swan McKay, Wallsy, Jezza, Judd, Fev, Diesel to name a few.....they have given me so much and more significantly, they have given so much of themselves to the club. Following Carlton is at times a very demanding pursuit, but by golly, a bloody rewarding one! Before I sign off, I want to thank Mr. R Pratt for inspiring me to write my longest post yet on TC- his passion and absolute commitment to Carlton, not to mention to the arts, the Australian community and to the environment, is something I'm very grateful for.

And, in a nutshell, is why I love Carlton- there is no club which demands and yet elicits such a loyal and positive response from all associated with this great club! :thanks:

Funny you mentioned the '77 game when we got thrashed by Collingwood by 102 points, I was only remembering that the other day (not sure why). I was in high school and remembering going out to Waverley by 2 trains and a bus to go to the game with a group mainly consisting of Collingwood supporters. I remember the game vividly and then spent 3 hours getting home as there was such a big crowd we couldnt get on a bus. All the way home, for 3 hours, we had the final score - I will never forget it - of 22 goals 20 to 7 goals 8 repeated to us. Whenever i catch up with anyone involved that day it is the first thing we say. I just love Carlton and have done so for 40 years.

When i was a kid i was playing in the jungle gym and i collided with this kid... we both cut our heads and started bleeding... I then noticed that his blood was Red... I found that very weird as my Blood was navy blue... I thought he was an Alien...

Then I got told that I'm the Alien... that can't be true... aren't we all here Blue Blooded?
