Aesop told this story...

“A farmer who had a quarrelsome family called his sons and told them to lay a bunch of sticks before him. Then, after laying the sticks parallel to one another and binding them, he challenged his sons, one after one, to pick up the bundle and break it. They all tried, but in vain. Then, untying the bundle, he gave them the sticks to break one by one. This they did with the greatest ease. Then said the father, Thus, my sons, as long as you remain united, you are a match for anything, but differ and separate, and you are undone.”

wow dude very profound... now how does this relate to our back six??? Let me guess they should all bunch together in the goal square and wait for their opponents to come to them...

We really stuffed up by drafting Yarran then.

I haven't seen Hurley play this year, so I can't comment on him.

I'm still happy with Yarran. Club said he won't do much in Year 1, and I like what I saw in the NAB Cup. Reads the play well across HFF, so he gets on the end of the ball, and has skill.

He will be a good player, like Betts. While he's taller than Eddie, I think Ed does well in the air for his size. So I see them as kinda similar types.

Hurley might or might not have helped us. Is he a true, hard ar5e defender?

It's irrelevant anyhow, cause we took Yarran. No point 5talking about what might have been.

Let's talk about what is, what we have got.

Let's talk about putting Johnston under the microscope. Is he a hard ar5e, true defender?

Is Stevens going to be exploited down back?

I reckon the club have just gone with what they had and are preying it works out down back.

And they're preying Jamo's shoulders are going to be OK moving forwards.

Big Qn marks down back if you ask me.

What's O'Keefe like?

Me, I reckon if Bower can't step it up soon, and when I say step it up I mean actual 1-on-1 defensive work and being cool under pressure in the last few mins of a 1 pt game, then I say send him to the Twos and give Setanta a shot. Bower got a stack of it in Qtr 1 last week, but that meant bugger all given he lost the plot in Qtr 4. And he was exposed the week prior too. Four pre-seasons and he's still nowhere close to having the body to play on the genuine KPPs. It was 3-4 years ago we praised his outing on Micky O. But it's now 3-4 years down the track and we wouldn't dream of him playing on a Roughie or Lloyd or Hall.

Bower was hopeless against Brisbane, and again last weekend. take a look at his pathetic efort at the death, one on one against Lloyd, the two of them sharing half the ground because the rest of the Bombers team went back. Take a look at how poor Bower was, didn't even look like he tried, just let Lloyd win possession.

He's been there 4 pre-seasons and is still a rake, not even remotely close to matching it against the big boys.

We have three good key defenders in Waite, Jamison and Thornton, Stevens provides plenty of drive off half back and Scotto is a good hard nut when he's right.
West Coast and Hawthorn have both won flags recently with weaker defensive units than ours.
Our defence isn't the issue, we won't win a flag until we have more than one avenue to goal.

..don't agree.. ..Jamo is our real KPB.. ..Waite plays better as a loose floating back, and we all seem to agree that Thornton plays best as our 3rd defender.. ..Bower isn't ready for CHB, Austin too young/raw still.. ..Setantrum seems out of favour..

 Very Good

Modern flag winning Blues sides have been built on great settled defence and defenders. Southby, Waite, Doull, McKay, Austin, Perovic, English ,Hunter, Silvagni, Sexton, Dean, and so on. I reckon we've only got 2 genuinely good defenders Jamo and Waite (and it doesnt look like he is destined for a permanent role there). Thornton is ok but he is no General in the backline, Bower is still developing, as is Austin. Persevering with Army and/or Brownie is worthwhile. I see real hope with young Joey Anderson. He is brave, has some pace and a terrific attitude. He should get an extended run in the side.

I tend to think the only way we will get a settled and drilled defence is to pick and then stick with a back six for an extended period. Jamo, Bower, Thornton, and Anderson should form the core.

We have only one defender in the true sense of the word and that is Jamieson. The others are windows dressing only. Defenders like Stevens,Scotland and co... you have to be kidding me....these blokes would not know what the word Defend means.

And I'm sick of the excuse that we need guys like them down back to give us drive. But at what cost if they cant defend their direct opponents and what drive??? They aren't exactly speed skaters. Christou was the ideal HBF he was quick, knew what defense was about and yeah he gave us drive!!! We need to breed a couple of HBF's on this model & not use show pony front runners who look great when we are going forward but look all at sea when it comes back the other way.

Waite is useless to us down back and should be exploited up the ground where he can roam and create and break games open.

I suggest trying Setanta down back with Jamo as the spine and building some hard working types around them...Armfield possibly Joey possibly..these guys and others need to be experimented throughout this year so by next year we get it right and settle into a regular back six.

Oh and how I would love to see someone like Austin come on and replace Thornton...the sooner the better!
