Good article, and yet more hilarity at the expense of Richmond

I'm sure there must be a few clubs around bemoaning the fact they overlooked Jacobs and allowed us to take him again in the rookie draft.

He'd be getting a game with a lot of clubs at the moment.

Great article - but the Knobel -v- Betts comparison could have been written in 2006 not 2009.

Excellent article, although to say that De Luca was useful is something of an overstatement! He looked like he could be useful, but no.

The great thing was the recognition of Jacobs, he's been a real surprise packet. I've been really impressed with his ability and tenacity with ground balls.

It's a bit premature, but I wonder whether, in hindsight we might have been mistaken in giving up two very handy draft picks for Robbie Warnock. Having put that out there, if and when Warnock gets fit we'll be in great shape. Then Hammer might come under the pump. Very important that he develops his football knowledge this year.

Yeah, we might've been able to draft Mitch Robinson at #24 like we hoped

Yes I am aware of that quirk. As always time will be the judge. I have no problem with the effort to get Warnock, I didn't see Jacobs coming up so well. But if it turns out that the trade was a bust, the fact that the recruiting team might have bailed the trading team out wouldn't mean the trade wasn't a mistake

a good example of pagan wanting to go the recycled hack ruckmen, but being beaten to it by the Tiges. Double win for us.

That article makes me shudder.....the possibility of taking Knobel ahead of Betts.

But getting Warnock may have been the kick up the bum Jacobs needed.
We released him, so obviously he wasnt impressing but now all of a sudden he has really taken off and the only reason i can think that would happen is because he knows he is on his last chance to become an AFL footballer.

For example, if Jacobs were to become a star and our no. 1 ruckman (I can actually see it happening) and Warnock turns into nothing the trade will be considered a mistake, but then if we didnt get Warnock maybe Jacobs wouldnt have become a star in the first place...its not always black and white.

Having surplus ruckmen will = GOLD for us when GC are trading picks for established players. They're not going to go into their first season with a 17yo first ruck.

Great logic - what would that then make pick 40, chopped liver? :?

As long as that implies that the Kreuze finds a role elsewhere and is not reduced to second fiddle.

Considering we got a bloke of Robinson's calibre at 40, yes I would call it chopped liver. The other option would've been to not get Warnock, get Robbo at 24 and sort through the rest at 40. I know what I prefer right now.

Edited for typos...thrice

I'm sure i remember reading a recent M&D article with Jacobs where he said the whole 'release and re-draft' theory was incorrect.

Something along the lines that he was already resigned to Carlton before draft day and that it was impossible for another club to pick him up. The reason we had to go through the whole process at all was because he had been a rookie for too long.

Point is, Emma and a few posters seems to suggest that he was on the outer last year, where as I'm not sure this was the case.

The club always rated him highly AFAIK.

The way things worked out, we essentially got Warnock for pick 40. So yes, I would call it chopped liver.

I was trying to think of something righteous to proclaim pick 40 is not rubbish but seeing as you didn't claim we got Warnock for nothing then I'll let it go.

I liked your more succinct first draft, personally.

You think so? I'm not so sure. Then again, I have had a few 'froffies' today.

Close thread and argument there.

Quirk of the draft indeed - our recruiters had Robinson rated at about 14 - getting him at 40 was for free - (we also had O'Keefe rated at about 25.

We got the players we wanted in the draft and Warnock was for free. Our midfield is running rampant at the moment wait till Warnock gets started and our midfield will explode. The only quirk around the club will be Brian.

jacobs coming on, is a bonus for us and offeres us a huge opportunity to free up kreuzer.

jacobs, hampson and warnock to do our ruck work.

kreuzer to play up forward.

I reckon Kreuzer out of the square would be phenomenal and Fevola playing further upfield as a roaming forward, CHF type role and in front of Kreuzer would be fantastic. combine that with the some of the crumbers we are starting to get, would make for a very very handy forward line.

Fevola would be near impossible to man up on, no double teams, and i would back him in more times than not to beat his opponent.

Kreuzer, out of the sqaure, again, (he would need to adapt) but as we saw against Port last year, could be very damamging.

infact, a very similair way in which Brown/Bradshaw work, we could go with Kreuzer/Fevola.

I still think we lack 1 key forward, and if Warnock/Jacobs/Hampson can take care of the ruck work, that frees up Kreuzer to do that role and we continiue to improve and take the next step again.

A forward line of Kreuzer/Fevola/Betts/Yarren (or Garlet)/Wiggins/Robinson would be phenomonal IMO and very hard to stop. combine that with the goals the midfield is kicking at the moment and we would be hitting between 15-20 goals every game IMO, which would take us a hell of a long way to finishing top 4 and having a serious tilt at a flag.
