I hope we weren't stupid enough to fork out $$ to pay for him to go to the NFL combine. That's a waste of money if that's the case.

I didn't say he chose them i said we got no better talent coming through than them which is a concern

Im pretty sure he said it cost the club 12k but not 100% sure

WH and his crew spent time with two major teams and had access to everything bar some magnetic team board

Yeah, why look at other codes.

Wayne Hughes should just ask the posters on TC about recruiting; obviously the club has NFI

2004 was a bit of a dud year outside of the top 5 from memory.

Betts was a good get.

I can't believe we wasted pick #72 on Fisher.

I also heard Cazzesman was going to Collingwood. Apparently Eddie is still bitter about Swann and is looking for pay back.

Geez we overrate our players! And to think one of them hasn't even played a senior game yet for a start. :? Pitch them up against players that we could have selected with their respective picks and it mightn't be a pretty read.

Cazzesman - I presume the jaunt to analyse the NFL combine stipulated a report to the Board (or sub-committee thereof overseeing activity of the football department)???

Would make for an interesting read if so, as I'm a little puzzled as to what they would have got out of it (apart from psychological testing) due to the fact that every single one of these guys entering the NFL system has to be out of high school for a minimum of 3 years. Generally speaking you're talking 21+, with quite a few nearing their mid-20's. That's a whole new ball game and very different to assessing a 17/18 year olds' capabilities.

Wouldn't it have been a better idea to go to a few of the big colleges and spend some time with their recruiting heads?

Very interesting point Dr. Sherrin.

I have long suspected that David Parkin's theory of recruiting the 'mature mind' & 'mature body' player that we persisted with in the early to mid-90s (probably right up till the 97/98 draft) - had a lot do with Parkin's subscribing to the NFL practise of recruiting/drafting out of college (ie. the mature bodied 21 year olds).

The only thing was that Parkin forgot that in our system all the talented 17 and 18 year olds were already scooped out of the system by the time they got to the WAFL and SANFL - and what we were recruiting were no doubt tough hardened players - but not really talented ones.

There may be something said for making sure our talented 18 year olds spend a year or two in the SANFL, WAFL, VFL etc before they are drafted into the AFL - but I doubt it is going to happen.

I think there's a lot to be learned from the combine and the scouts Doc; while they might typically be dealing with mature bodies they are most certainly coping with projecting players into pro-systems and set ups.

Collegiate football, much like junior footy here, dumb down their systems considerably. The ones that do play pro-style setups are coveted (Notre Dame under Weis comes to mind).
