agree entirely.

In fact i think Robbo made us all feel that way. He has that feel of that hard nut Hickmott. Definately an exciting debut.

You couldn't ask for a better first up hit out against one of the better teams in the AFL. It might be just pre-season, and Laidley can make as many excuses as he wants about where his players are at in their training schedule (countering that we had 4 of our best 22 out!), but we'll happily take out of this game the end result which was we beat the living daylights out of a team that spanked us well and truly late last year.

And what a different team we looked last night.

What really struck me was the depth in midfield, and in particular the speed and zest among our young midfielders. We hunted in packs and were ultra desperate. See Jacobs going in hard at gound level !

Grigg looked terrific, very quick by foot and also by hand, albeit he stil kicks too many floaters on that left foot.

Another one was Armfield. While he didn't have much game time and therefore would have been as fresh as a Mos Def LP when he came on, I thought he looked very sharp and quick when he came on. Had real impact and looked noticably better than in his first year.

And then of course there's Robinson, who not only goes in hard and has a nice turn of pace, but more importantly knows where the football is. The Tasmanian Devil wa ubiquitous. Sign of a good player. Not just a flash here and there.

And Johnson showcased his fine kicking skills (how sweet he kicked it when he bagged that goal on the run!) and did some very neat things in close with his hands too. Looks a player.

And I didn't mind Bentley. Thought he looked a big unit, which is what we need. Might have mucked up a bit (must say I hardly noticed it), but hand look good, and his size looks good too.

And then there's Garlett, who clearly has a lot to like. How quick was he when he ran off after taking that grab. Shame he didn't bang that one through.

There were positives throughout the midfield. Gibbs looks like he is well and truly about to explode. So poised and clean.

Simpson I thought looked better than anytime last year. Ditto Betts who was very sharp.

Jacobs looked pretty good, and Kreuzer looked ominous. How good was the bit where he knocked the ball out of the North player's hands, and then set up Judd streaming through the middle !

Backline was good too, albeit we still appear to struggle against the really big bodies one on one.

Anderson looks ridiculously fit. His kicking is a serious concern, but gees, the kid has amazing pace down back and clearly treats his body like the temple of all temples. I say persist with him, because if he can correct his kicking he will end up a superb, fast mid-sized defender. Attacks it like a leopard.

Of course though the one glaring issue that still remains is we are so one-dimensional up forward. I know Fev is a beast who demands the whole forwardline, but what hapens if he ever goes down with injury? Ratten needs to try some other tricks. Why wasn't Fisher and/or Edwards played last night? Cloke did some good hard work at CHF, but he just doesn't have the pace to be a genuine concern for opp coaches up forward. Maybe it's a matter of getting Warnock in the ruck, with maybe Jacobs or Hammer helping, and then throwing the superstar Kreuzer up forward. :gift: Having the Houlihans and Betts' and Yarrans and Robbos contributing is good, but if Fev ever goes down with injury we will need a genuine big target replacement.

All in all though, we are soo much a different team now to what we were a few years back. And the great thing is we have nobody 30+.

GO BLUES

Nice first up performance however I'm not getting too carried away as the Kangaroos were very flat.
Lots of positives:
- Gibbs may well be a contender for the Brownlow this year......a wonderfully gifted footballer.
- Armfield & Russell appear to be improving.
- Robinson looks a bargain for pick #40.
- Our defensive set up with Waite, Bower, Jamison and Thornton looks solid.

Hopefully Browne, Hadley and Hampson play next week.

Just a point on Hale, I thought he was lucky to get those free kicks against Waite, when he basically put his arms acros Waite to fend him off and then against Jamo, who had his arms arund him, but wasn't really holding him...you have to be able to attempt to spoil.

I don't think we're that susceptable to 196cm+ forwards.

Ok here is my rap on last nights events.

I personally dont see why everyone thought Jacob's game was that good last night. I thought he was ok but he will get found out against the more athletic ruckman, he sstruggles to get off the ground.

Mitch Robinson is going to be very good, his attack on the footy, his reading of the play and his 2nd,3rd and 4th efforts are exceptional. How funny was he in the interview after the game, its like he has ADD.

Gibbs and Grigg, really excited me. The fact that they now belong in the midfield allows us to play Stevo behind the ball and use his exquisite kicking skills and also give Juddy a stint up forward.

Fev is a TANK, how big did he look last night.

We are beginning to get some flexibility up forward now too. Youn got Fev and Cloke, your tall options, JR, Wiggo and Robinson as the medium sized players, and Betts, Yarran and Garlett as our little guys.

Backline looks impressive, Waite, Bower, Jamo, T-Bird, Armfield and co.

Also i thought Bentley and Johnson will add fantastic depth. Bentley is heaps fitter than he was at Port and will make it very tough for Bentick to get a game, and Johnson has some beautiful foot skills to hurt opposition off of half back with Scotland and Stevo

I'd still give my left nut for a BIG full back. Not taking anything away from Jamo, he's been superb, and will continue to be, I just reckon we'd be much better off with him on the 2nd forward and a BIG fella down back to provide some presence.

Jacobs needs to be one of our nominated rookies. His ruckwork gave our midfield first use. He didn't do much around the ground but when he gives our midfield a ride like that, he doesn't need too. He did very well against one of the best in the competition in McIntosh. Sauce will only get better, it was his first game, was it not? I was very excited with his output last night.

Yeah, Jacobs has to be nominated. Especially if we intend to use Cloke and Kreuz in the F50 most of the time, and with 206 on the sidelines. He will get gametime for sure, and well deserved.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt that.

So they're one of the better teams, but their coach is already making excuses for them?

Contradictory statement.

On last night's match, they're nowhere near one of the better teams.

probably get shot down for this, but good to see Houlihan back out there and moving freely. will be a big plus for us if he stays fit all year.

I'll take that bullet, too, Yibbida! I put Hoops down as my favourite player on my membership details as well. I hope he continues in the way he played last night!

My MVP votes, fwiw:
5. Mitch Robinson
4. Chris Judd
3. Nick Stevens
2. Ryan Houlihan
1. Eddie Betts

Honourable mentions: Brendan Fevola, Kade Simpson, Greg Bentley, Bryce Gibbs, Marc Murphy, and Jeff Garlett (esp with his magic last goal)

Next week against the Dees or Dawks should prove very interesting.

Definitely.

He seemed very confident with his disposal last night. Made a few errors, but was better than serviceable.

Pleased to see Houla there too and when he roamed forward, you realise what we missed seeing of him for so many years when he was positioned down back.

p(12)terg,

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but could you please explain how fev doesn't make it into your top 5 players on the ground?!?!?!?

We either play the Dawks or the Dees next Sunday at 4.40pm at the Dome.
