Setanta "does not" have footy smarts. That is where he is struggling. Athletic, yep, tries his arse off, yep but football knowledge = zip! The problem is however that he is about to get to 26! I don't think he has time to grow some footy smarts!

As for Kennelly/Clark, easier to get a kick in the AFL when you have played Gaelic football for all your life and are a smaller build than 198cm.

Just my 2 cents.

He does have footy smarts. It's just that he's somewhat erratic in displaying them, just as Waite is.

Waite is like the girl with the curl. When he is good, he is very, very good, and when he is bad, he is horrid. He makes some bad decisions and executes badly on occasion, particularly by foot. He has brain fades, such as one occasion when he could have just tackled a guy and instead just pushed him right in the back. But these mistakes are outweighed on the whole by his athleticism and his ability to move the ball quickly, if riskily.

Santy hasn't been given much opportunity to do this, but is quite capable of doing the same. Some of his highlights are brilliant, and you can't do some of the stuff he's done without footy smarts. One example is an occasion on which he was rucking last year against the Pies about 30-35m out from goal. He grabbed the ball out of the air in the ruck contest and screwed it across his body for a goal. Against the Tigers the first time we played them last year, he grabbed a loose ball at half back and ran a short distance and then unleashed a raking kick to about 40-45m out from goal. The kick favoured Fev brilliantly even though he had an opponent on either side of him. He took the mark but missed the goal. His ability to do that sort of thing makes him a potent rebounder, but it's a pity that he isn't used in that role. But he doesn't just kick long. If you look back at his games last year, he had his fair share of short kicks when longer options weren't available, including sideway kicks when necessary and short passes (one example being a short pass he kicked from just outside the 50 to Fisher who marked and goaled against either Richmond or Essendon* early last year).

You must be talking about Kerrie Anne Kennelly.
Tadgh Kenelly has sensational footskills and IMO would be in the top 20% of the AFL players for ball use.

That's why the Swans worked so hard to get the ball in his hands in their backline.

Nah I reckon they gave to him because he had the ability to take on the advantage line - not because of his foot skills - He ran at and took on the defence to break the flood

You've outdone yourself here SB. Kennelly was took their kickouts including their premiership year - do you give kickouts to guys with dodgy footskills?? he threaded a vital goal in the GF they won, while Micky O was spraying points from everywhere. Don't take your dislike of Setanta out on all Irish players.

My view is that Setanta has shown real glimpses but because he doesn't read the game hasn't delivered to the extent I'd hoped but he has clearly been serviceable and has played well on a number of big names. he is still worth his place on the list and if he gets his head right might retain his spot.

Brilliant post!!

Exactly what I see......thought I was going :screwy: as SB was telling me that I was actually seeing something else.

Unfortunately because of his background and his unparalled passion to succeed, when he does get something wrong he lets it affect his confidence and he goes into his shell or looks for a safe option. I enjoyed it when he took players on or went for something that was instinctive because he is capable of the freaky things as well.....but he needs support; mostly from his coach.

I have noticed that since Ratts has taken over he has been more hesitant, and this goes against achieving on the field and developing as a player. I truly believe that if he was given an assurance (like a Jordan Russell perhaps) that he will get games regardless of performance, and a green light to play the game to the full, he will grow. But I believe that this freedom will never be granted.

Let's hope that he does come back, and that his confidence isn't shot, and that he proves all the naysayers wrong. After all it would only benefit Carlton if he ripped it up on the field....we should be ALL backing him to the hilt.

GO GET'EM SANTY!!!

GO BLUES!!!

I like that because you don't rate Setanta all of a sudden you wanted him to get the boot, don't like Irish players and will be forced to shut up if he is back at the club next week.

Perhaps you should actually read other peoples posts.

I have always stated that I want him on our list this year, I also believe that if the players are happy for him to be part of their group then all is fine.

If SB is too far away to comment on games then perhaps Beano is way too far away to talk about a club that he only has interest in because of one player, he himself has previously stated that he would follow whoever Setanta plays for. Plus he hates our coach, an out an out club champion.

Yeah, correct, the initial interest was because of Setanta, but having been there to Carlton and PP, having met some of the boys the interest spread to the whole club and Judd is my fav player bar none, while I am no caro wilson  I have seen enough and read up enough, thanks ninja man, to be able to spot when a player merits a go on ability, and Setanta does, he is no marquee player but does the simple things well and consistantly, that translates to a simple equation in team ball games, if the other team dont have the ball they cannot score.
As for hating Ratts, thats strong, I dislike what I hear of his manner, and not from the Irish guys, from one of your own club GREATS.

And if you've asked whether there is precedent for a suspension from an intra-club fracas, check this 1987 Ted Whitten article out:
