He shouldn't get ANYTHING from the fookin tribunal. Its an intraclub, he hit his own teammate, if he goes at the tribunal then once again we'll have a first for Carlton. The first player EVER suspended for clocking your own teammate

They were playing on different teams. He wasn't his teammate in this game.

I must say that when tempers flare people do silly things. The punch is one thing, the kick is silly and I'm sure he'd be regretting that now....but it didn't cause Cloke any real harm...its certainly not the disgrace some have labelled it.

Its going to be interesting to see the reaction from some if Setanta is retained.

I'd be all for fining him, suspending him, sending him off for some councelling and then retaining him, but for one fact. The reaction from teammates isn't good. If whats been said is true then the leadership group will more than likely vote to sack him. If thats their decision then I'm happy with that.

The hit was disgraceful - happened just before 3/4 time, Fev stepped over and told O'hAilpin to get off the ground, when Setanta walked over to the huddle at 3/4 time, Stevo gave him a spray and then he, Thornton and Waite all told him to leave the field.

Thornton didn’t see the hit, he was just filthy at Setanta for not covering his man

Have to disagree there. They are/were team mates. It was a match simulation.

What Setanta did was nothing but a disgrace. Clubs are like a family. You do not hurt your own family. When they play, they play as a team with a common objective. They celebrate a win together, they hurt together when they lose.

You simply cannot do what Setanta did to your own team mate. It is just not on.

What is your problem?

You want the club, via their Comms Manager to release a statement virtually straight after the incident, without having done any sort of internal investigation, without ascertaining whether Cloke said something outrageously unacceptable that provoked the hit? I;'m not saying this likely was the case, but surely the club should investigate the incident in full before releasing a statement.

Ratten;s comments were fine. They were non-commital because the club hasn't as yet fully investigate all the facts.

Doc, are you after the club to release a statement along the lines of......

Following the incident between Carlton players Cloke and O'Hailpen, the club is investigating the incident at which time, we will make an announcement.

If that is what you are after, then I would have to agree with Indie and Melvin. There really isn't anything that needs to be announced as its there in technicolor for all to see. Making a statement about an event that EVERYONE has already seen, seems odd and stating the bleeding obvious.

Dr Sherrin said this earlier in the thread...

Now - we have a lot of new people at Carlton, but Ian Coutts is the veteran Communications Manager who should never have let Ratts talk to the press. Coutts needed (before the end of the match) write up a brief statement from the Football Club saying that ...

"...the actions by Setanta O'hAilpin today were not acceptable and he has been suspended indefinitely - that suspension commencing immediately. The Football Club will review the incident and discuss what further actions will be taken within the next few days and will release a statement to the media once the dust has settled."

He didn't - he still hasn't and that's a disgrace in my book.

Why would you do a knee jerk reaction and suspend him indefinitely, without ascertaining the facts first?

Maybe Cloke said to Setanta "You're a failur, a hopeless Irish &%NT". I reckon the smack in the face would have been deserved in such a situation.

Again, I know it's very unlikely, but I jsut don't think you can come out and make an official statement saying X and Y will happen, so quickly, without at oeast finding out what the provocations was, if there was one.

For what it is worth, I think it was a dog's act.

Cloke was almost on the ground, not standing up, and Setanata whacked him. Not good hitting a teammate in an intra club game when he is down, and not standing. He's an easy target that way.

And then even worse is kicking him while he's out. That's virtually animal like. Setanta looked like a thug and an ape when he walked off.

I reckon the lad has some serious latent anger in him, and it all just erpted at that point in time, unlucky for Cloke.

Of course, there's still the question of whether Cloke said/did anything particularly bad to provoke the hit and kick.

The good doctor wasn't wrong. Very prophetic in fact. Although announcement was made by Swanny and not Couttsy.

Hi VB...no problem I'm aware of - although I do start throwing punches when I have too much to drink and as such just drink sensibly now.

That'd be Setanta's only excuse (and we know he doesn't drink)!! Seriously...what needs investigation? If Cloke said something - then that's sledging - gamesmanship...and it's irrelevent - because no amount of sledging warrants that behavior.

I'm not sure if you've been involved at footy clubs before - but if someone has a problem - then the way to address it is to put the boxing gloves on after the game and get in the ring and sort it out. Setanta had this option - and he can smash Clokey in the face for all it's worth in my book - but not on the field in an intra-club...in the footy club environment - that's how it happens at most levels (and we're none the wiser of their differences and that's the way it is and always has been).

...and everyone is happy!

Ratts has stated it was unacceptable - that's good...but that's not going to quash anything - so, yes...in my opinion a statement stating the immediate suspension pending further action should have been released. As I said to Melvey - it's my opinion....you don't have to agree with it.

It was a intra-club match, happens all the time. Pretty sure Diesel and Rhys-Jones went at it a few times during intra-club matches, in the end they had to play on the same side. Also remember Peter Dean broke a finger once when he tried to clip Hickmont over the head for a payback from the 95GF.

The kick was just a bit cheek'ish

My thoughts exactly !!!! I'm sure Matty Hogg and McGuane had a punchup one time too.

There are two sides to every story as well.

Good to see Setanta p[laying with passion and aggression and fired up for the first session.

Cool heads should prevail - he should stay

Would we have sent him home if it was a real match and Cloke was playing for Collingwood?

I dont at all ever condone violence towards a team mate and to be honest find it hard to understand but the posters here who want his head should at least wait until all the facts are revealled.

I find the fact that Australia's opening batsam grabbed his vice captain around the throat and had to be seperated by team mates more disturbing and then for the whole thing to be swept under the carpet by the establishment again even more so.

wait for the facts to be revealed? WTF??? :screwy:

Unless you spotted someone on the grassy knoll it's pretty clear what happened.

I :screwy: :screwy: :screwy: :screwy:

Seems the club agrees and wants to investigate this before making any finals decisions.

Rather than make a smart arse remark to what I said for that sake of it - think about what I said.

In plain english neither you nor me were on the field so neither of us know what led to this so how about at least waiting for the club to at least investiage it.

Imagine if Cloke has called Setanta a "Black Irish ........", who do you think would be in more trouble? I am in no way suggesting this has happened as I wasnt there though.

Doc, for arguments sake, what if Cloke told Carlos his mother wasn't a nice person.

Is the punch acceptable in that situation?

If I were Setanta I would go the racial vilification route for some mitigating circumstances relief.

Have a chat to Syd.

Ok...maybe a couple of hours late - but well done...glad some of you aren't running my footy club.

I still hope they get in the ring and punch each other's lights out though...and that's where it should have started and ended.

In the boxing ring! Not on the ground!!! Honestly - he grew up playing competitive sport - he would have heard some sledging, some questioning of his sexuality and other references to his mother too filthy to print - unless it's racially provoked - grow a pair, wrestle him until he's blue, point the finger and then after the game throw the gloves at him and demand a box on...

carltonfc.com.au - O’hAilpin Suspended by Carlton

Quote:
The Carlton Football Club has suspended Setanta O’hAilpin indefinitely following his actions during today’s intra-club practice match at Visy Park.

“Setanta’s actions were totally unacceptable, on or off the field, and we are bitterly disappointed in the incident with Cameron Cloke,” said Carlton CEO Greg Swann...

Do you remember Nicky Winmar going beserk against us? That was one of the saddest things I have seen in football and in hindsight his actions were understandable.

I don't like what he did.....

I have never liked the way that Setanta could never quite pick up the 'essence' of our game.

When Setanta was up in Browns face talking shit, looking at him with crazy eyes, accidently spitting on him from being so close I was thinking.."Wtf are you doing" and so was Brown. Never once did Setanta use this 'aggression' for strength and body on body stuff...so Brown would proceed to kick 6 or whatever...and walk the walk. Setanta was just a big tall lad with no clue out there, I have found him a little embarrasing in the past....

What happened today is a sure way for the group to turn against you....You don't turn on your own like that with such obvious contempt, the little toe poke showed his contempt.....

I personally don't ever want to see him in the navy blue again....

Verbal assault and physical assaults are two different things.

No one is saying that Carlos was not provoked. No one knows whether Carlos was provoked. What we ALL know is that Carlos threw a punch at Cloke and threw in a kick while Cloke was down. That is what most are commenting on.

Regardless of what was said, I'm sure there is a process in which players can escalate their grievances internally. I am sure physical assaults is not one of them. By saying "let's wait and see what actually happened before we make any comments" is ridiculous. If Cloke, hypothetically, racially abused Carlos, Cloke will be dealt with. It doesn't mean Carlos has the license to deck Cloke.

I do Mark - and I'd hate to think any racial sledging was used. I doubt Cameron Cloke would stoop to that level.
