If you look at the table below, you will notice a number of things:

1. Due to the AFL System, there has been 9 different Premiers since our last victory in 1995 (The Brions with their 01, 02, 03 flags, the Cows with their 97 & 98 wins and Norf with 2 in 96 & 99)

2. All the AFL special projects, bar the Shockers have won at least 1 flag since admission (Weagles, Cows, Brions, Port, Swines).

3. Basketcases of only a few years ago (The Pussies were in massive debt and had lost a bunch of grand finals since their previous flag in 63 & the Dawks were a shadow of their 80's and 90's form and almost merged with Melbum) had also got the chocolates in 07 & 08.

4. Our story is very well documented. Whether it is poor recruitment, failure to embrace the system, the draconian draft penalties we were handed or simply a combination of all, we have only started to emerge as a real finals threat now.

5. With one of our greatest rivals the Scum, winning in 00 and drawing level with our 16, one wonders how the others that haven't tasted success for yonks; have been so ordinary.

6. Although the ones below us are not to scale, the time gaps to their last flag must alarm those clubs and their supporters. Next season, it will be 20 years since the Filth broke their hoodoo, 30 years since the Ferals got one, 44 for the Aints, 46 for the Dees and an incredible 56 years for the Bullfrogs. IMHO, we will stand on that dias before any of these perrenial losers.

7. As this is an exercise to show how long ago all the clubs last won the silverware, Freo are missing. I reckon they will be for a few years yet.

8. Look at the clubs above us since 95. Who are the most likely to succeed in September before us? Possibly the Pussies and Dorks? The rest are either on the bottom of the heap or are in decline.

9. I think we are well placed for a golden era. I reckon our kids won't just pinch one. We very well could do a 79, 81, 82!

10. Happy New Year to all posters and let's all hope 2009 is the dawning of a Navy Blue resurgence.

I think it can be argued that given the length of time from their creation/relocation, the Swans can't be classed with teams like Adelaide and WCE, given how quickly those teams were able to become powerhouse teams.

Maybe KK, but the amount of special assistance that the Swans, like the Lions have received is unbelievable. Aside from pre-draft selections and additional salary cap concessions, they also have the AFL promoting them as their team in your town. Mind you the AFL don't do it very well and spend money at the wrong time and fixture games at the wrong venues and don't fixture the best team there enough. :P

Interesting points, and a great graph.

This is what I love about TC - and why it shits all over any other football forum... :D

Only problem for mine, is that it had been a while since the Cats and Hawks had won the Premiership before they recently broke their droughts (44 years, and 17 years respectively) and both teams pretty much 'came out of the woodwork' to change from bottom half toilers to premiership winners in 1-2 years. Sure the cattle was there, but you could argue that any one of the teams below us in the graph (bar Melbourne) could jump up and finish top 4 either this year - or the next.

I will say this though - we can rest easy, as Carlton will DEFINITELY win a flag before either Collingwood or Essendon*.

Nice graph Brizzy.

Let's hope we sort that flower out sooner, rather than later.
