The man who is responsible for drawing the VFL/AFL Premiership Poster (and former cartoonist at the now defunct Herald Newspaper) has passed away at 85. :(

Hope he has drawn a Number 17 and filed it away for use in the very near future.

A winning Grand Final Day was not complete without picking up about a dozen or so posters outside the MCG (I have done that a few times 8) ).

Will be sadly missed - RIP.

The posters and the company is now owned by someone else and still trade under the name WEG. They have a shop is Kilsyth and have been producing the posters for many years so #17 won't be an issue.

Have an artist proof copy of our first in 1906 which hangs in the study. Looks Magic!

Many years ago I won a raffle at a work do where the prize was a GF style pic of yours truly by the great man himself. I still have it somewhere.

RIP

Yes, RIP.

The great thing about the Carlton premiership poster is we have never had to put up with a stupid anonymous Hawk, Swan Cat or Eagle taking up the entire poster.

Weg was forced to include a caricature of our captains on each of ours and they make the posters much more charming and personal than for any of the other teams. The only other charicature I can remember on any of the post 1954 posters was I think a small Sheedy riding atop a bomber Dr Strangelove style for the 2000 premiership.

One of the great institutions of the game though, the WEG poster.

I always felt his 1987 Premiership Poster was pretty disappointing. It was the first year after he had "retired" from "The Herald" - and the actual WEG Poster was sponsored by someone else - and it was 'top & tailed' with their sponsorship logos.

Not exactly right Jars.....I have all of the original posters; and the only Carlton posters depicting a Captain are .......

1968.....Barassi.....1979.....Jezza....1982.....Fitzpatrick; and 1995 Sticks Kernahan.....all of the rest are unfortunately just anonymous caricatures.

Jars....I've still got his address and Home 'phone number; as we met him once just briefly; and he seemed genuinely thrilled that I had the whole 8 Carlton set; and I was also going to ask him why he didn't stick to the Captain format......but now....alas....I'll never know...... :(

As John Kennedy famously said...."Don't think.....Do"

Actually I always thought the Swan in the 2005 one was meant to look like Barry Hall...but maybe that was just me.

Anyway sad news this, legend. RIP WEG.
