This appointment along with the unnecassary timimg of the extension to rattens contract make me wonder whether we have lost the plot.

Why wasn't a guy like Scott Wynd approached.

Matthew Capuano was a complete dud who was lucky enough to have been in a side that included Wayne Carey.

We have the one of the most youthful Ruck Divisions in the league who would be eager to learn and be moulded and we go and appoint one of the most ordinary exponents of the art of rucking to teach them. GO FIGURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

100 game AFL player and 2 time Premiership player. Why don't you wait and see how our rucks go in 2009 before you start slinging mud.

I'll admit I would've hoped for someone like Jeff White or Luke Darcy, but if the people in charge believe that he can do the job, I'll support it. But yes, am definitely scratching my head about this appointment. But then again, great coaches aren't always great players (take Rat-boy over at Hawthorn for example).

I can remember him doing some pretty good things against us at times .
I think in the grand final he played a good one . But so did a lot of them .

Give him a go before we bag him . He just might turn up trumps .

I must admit this has surprised me as well. However i am sure that Carlton know what they are doing.
Hopefully he can help make our rucks alot more competitive next year & beyond 8)

I guess the proof of the pudding is in the eating and it will be a while before we see what this particular "pudding" is like. Now he is with us, I can wish him all the success imaginable.
However, I do remember him as a player and wasn't impressed at all. I just hope he is a much better coach than player. :?

Capuano was a lot better player than he's remembered, IMO, and his reputation has been unfairly tainted by his time with St Kilda.

Even if he's not one of the Madden brothers, I'm sure he'll have some worthwhile information to pass on.

I was hoping we would chase jeff white to play in the ants and teach the young guys, he may not have been a great of the game either but he did pretty well in the ruck at 195 cm. Capuano might have had an alright career, but from memory he never had solid tap technique, just used to crash and bash, not exactly what our young ruck division needs to be taught.

At least Robert Harvey would have some inside info on what actually did happen at the "1 time premiers"...

Good call.

I never saw this one coming that's for sure, and I can't say I remember him being a standout player.

On the positive side Ratts would have played against him a few times, and he possibly left a lasting impression with his work ethic and ruckwork around the ground...

Capuano was at North when Harry Madden was their ruck coach (prior to his election in 99). I'm sure Harry passed on a few pearls.

Let's see if Capuano can pass those on to our young rucks.

I'm no expert on the art of rucking but wouldn't Jeff White not have been a good choice given how the rules of the game have changed to hinder how the Jeff Whites of footy used to play?

Welcome to Carlton Matt and May The Force Be With You.

Strange obsession we have here with thinking ruck coaches need to have been great ruckmen.

TBB i think it helps to have a quality ruckman as a coach but understand your point. Would have really liked any of Primus,Keating,Wren or Ball as an appointment. Maybe Capuano`s strength is in the tactical side of the game.

There must be something that has Ratten wanting him at Carlton.

Maybe Ratts found Capuano hard to read/shark and feels that this is something he wants being passed onto our ruckmen......
