Its still a dump IMO.
I hate going to a beach, standing knee deep in the water and not being able to see my feet.
Rickshaw drivers who give you a price and then show you a card afterwards that has a different one signed off by the tourism minister and threaten to call the police if you don't pay.
Shopkeepers who follow you into the street and try and physically pull you back into their shops if you don't buy stuff.
Stinking jungle, ticks, sweat rash, open sewage drains. Aah Langkawi.
A law that prevents inter-racial/religious couples from being in close proximity.
OK the food is great but you can get it in Singapore as well.
5 star resorts are not the real Malaysia any more than Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Tijuana or Acapulco are the real Mexico.
Try living in a place before you make an opinion. It helps.
And I know Dr Mahatir is no longer PM. That doesn't make him a nicer person.
I'll still take the money.
Also wandered through Georgetown amongst the people. It wasn't just resorts - on Batu Ferringhi, you don't need to go far from the resort and you get people trying to sell you things.
Noticed some Australians being rude - without casting any aspersions on yourself - but perhaps an arrogant patronising attitude amongst your fellow Australians is partly to blame? Australians who want to only pay 5 ringgit for something when the marked price is 40 ringgit.
In some ways, it is the vestiges of colonialism - I noticed my wife would often get asked to buy stuff but I wouldn't - I'm not Anglo-Saxon.
You are entitled to your opinion but from what you are saying, anywhere that doesn't have all sewerage covered, anywhere that has tropical diseases is a dump?
Well buddy, you're talking about 40% of the world in terms of tropical diseases and you're talking about 80% of the world when it comes to covered sewerage.
You do realise how fortunate we are to have covered sewerage - in many places in the world as you probably see in some parts of Mexico, it's a luxury.
