Doc Sherrin, if you are around, can you clarify why the ACCC wouldn't have hard copies of these emails?

Hard copies of emails are worse than useless - anyone can type up a "copy" of an email.

Easy to identify a forged email Agro.

Compliance/Governance are the key words, the whole IT world at the upper end of the scale live by it. It bores the absolute shit out of me, and in some cases is absolute overkill how detailed it is. Anyone who had worked for a US Company will tell you about SOX policies. If you need to take a piss, make sure you're identity card gives you access to urinal 1a for 5mins and two sheets of paper, if you go over a big alarm is sounded.

Public companies must keep electronic correspondance for 7 years as part of internal controls and audit trails, especially for Directors and Executives.

As I said earlier companies develop software specifically to archive emails, protect emails from being tampered with and audit every change, restoration, deletion etc of email. It's impossible unless a IT admin has altered the applications settings, removed logs etc etc or a network has been hacked.

The ACCC lose face on two fronts, they have inadequate security controls in place to protect data or an inadequate solution in place to archive data.

Either way they are stupid.

What's the bet it was on a tape  Go Dick. This should be thrown out soon 8)

Computer problems have corrupted the emails, relating to correspondence between senior Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) officials.

Back-up tapes on which the emails are stored may be sent to the US to see if the data can be retrieved, the Federal Court was told on Friday.

:P :P :P :P :P

Silly twonkers - damn shame really!

I love a bit of good dick news...

I know where you are coming from Mjonc in regards to SOX. I work for a company that is owned by an American listed organization. Ever since SOX came in the amount of extra meetings, extra work, extra effort in detail is stupidly mindblowing. Was thinking of moving jobs because of it but because of the uncertain times we're in have decided to continue to make my working life a misery for a little while yet.

I too am flabbergasted with the ACCC's response to missing emails. If there was one place that i thought would be just as bad as working to SOX guidelines it would be a government department.

It seems there really are x-files. I wonder if it was the smoking man that physically corrupted the tapes

Sorry, I cant resist, i work for a vendor in this industry and see this shit all the time. They have probably changed backup software vendors and versions about 5 times since it was put on the tape, and dont have a tape drive that can read the one it;s on cause its about 4 versions old too, oh and the guy who knew how to drive the software left the agency about 3 yrs ago

Synbad is right, we should have a "new" prez before the start of the next season 8)

If they are relying on tape alone in the DR plan then god help them.

Tapes are prone to faults, using that as there only backup method is absurd. I have they lose for being stupid, anyone looking for a job as an IT Manager might get there chance at the ACCC shortly.

I hate to play the Devil's advocate, but Dick deserves everything that gets thrown at him.

If he was Collingwood President everyone on this site would be calling for the death penalty.

He's a crook, get over it.

And that's from someone who's loved the Blues since the 1950's.

That's a serious allegation you've made there kkk saying that Pratt is a "crook".

He has yet to be convicted of any crime. His company was found guilty of price fixing by the ACCC but that is not a criminal offence in Australia.

Whether it's Eddie McGuire or the late Ron Evans, to label someone a criminal without the "alleged" in front of it is dangerous unless they have been found guilty of a criminal offence.

Well, disks are a lot cheaper now, but of course it would be misleading to claim that tapes cannot be used for backups, as they were the standard mechanism within most organisations for decades.

Hard disks can and do develop physical faults ... perhaps not as frequently as tape, although I'm not sure of the actual stats on this.

Of course the other question is how accurate is the info which has appeared in the press. it is not exactly a technical presentation of their backup strategy. Things can and do go wrong, even in systems which are thought to be highly reliable. There have been numerous systems failures around the world. e.g. telco systems, which illustrate this.

It's interesting though!

I do remember back in 1982 writing a VLSI design project to tape on a VAX11/780, and the tape spool was stored in a filing cabinet, no magnetic devices nearby. ... 2 years later when I wanted to get a print of the design layout, the tape was unreadable.

if he was at collingwood, i know i'd be hurling abuse at him and collingwood in truckloads. but because he pulled my team out of shit and put it back on track to return to the powerhouse it should be and in contention for a premiership, nothing he could do would upset me. i don't care how much he's ripped me off, he has my blessings. if he was collingwood prez on the other hand.....
