Some truth to this BUT ... I was there at the Battle for the Coleman and it was an awesome display from a hungry team. They humiliated us and we weren't showing bad form. My thinking went from "I wonder who Geelong will beat?" to, simply, "I wonder..."

Well put Dommo, some can see the big picture whilst other choose to be ignorant. The Dawkers were in red hot form leading up to and in the finals.

What about the fact that they (Hawthorn) utilised the Kokoda Trail trip as a team building exercise.

I think Sydney did it as well.

Through adversity a team binds together.

I read an article on how the Hawthorn players viewed that as being important for them....

Why doesn't Carlton do this as well?

Time to get tough...

To have the balls to make tough decisions on players and trade them away

If the Hawks picked Deledio & Tambling (as Richmond did) in 2004 instead of Roughhead and Franklin they would have struggled to make the eight and there would be none of this talk about following their "model".

Sure they have made some good draft selections and trade deals (largely thanks to the inept Laidley & Freo) however they have also made some mistakes. Thorpe and Dowler haven't done much yet, Luke Brennan (pick #8 in 2002) has been delisted whilst they gave up pick #6 in 2003 for Danny Jacobs.

Well done and good luck to the Hawks but we shouldn't be getting carried away.

I think you have to model yourself to both teams that played on Saturday and not just the winner. For me Geelong shot themselves in the foot.

You can talk all you like about game plans etc but the "theme" is what puts a team in a position to challenge for a flag. That theme is around sacrifice for the team cause ... to put yourself second to the good of the team ... this means getting hurt, this means playing hurt, this means hurting an opposition player, winning the ball, this means protecting your team mate, running down an opposition player that is faster than you, refusing to be outmarked ... it means alot of things. Game plans change and change but the theme will be there forever.

Cazzes was right ... for Carlton the journey really just started.

My shopping list is for talented and versatile players with some shit in them.

We do however have to find something in the development area. I don't what it is but what I saying is when I compare Gary Ablett as a TAC cup player and now I see a totally different football player ... I wouldn't say I ever witnessed him taking a game on in the TAC cup but I do now with regularity. I guess what I am trying to say is what made Ablett cross that line from just talented player to talented, versatile and driven. What does that to a person ... we need that in our Gibbs and Murphys so that they elevate themselves into true champion status.

One thing I failed to mention that we need is a specialist kicking coaching as the dawks have.

Carlton doesnt have to model themselves on anybody.

Theres sufficient culture and premiership winning personnel at our club to work out a flag winning strategy.

Brett Ratten is as canny as Clarkson and has access to as much or even more expert advice or opinions if he needs them.

The main thing this time around will be to look at the way that a young team like Hawthorn ran out the season and also when they peaked - which was very late in the year.

As long as we have enough fit and skilled players to cover all positions (which we almost have now) that peak at the right time - Carlton will be Carlton and we will develop our own flag winning strategy.

Our 17th flag will be won just as others have been won in the past- 4 quarter efforts with a super skilled, fast midfield that gets first use of the ball - and uses it to maximum advantage.

So Caz are you telling us that after 6 years at the bottom our 4/5/6 year plan didn't start till last year? Surely we have had some kind of plan prior to that? At the very least we had lots of high draft picks that should produce a very talented side. I mean if we have a change of coach surely that doesn't mean that everything is back to year zero. Ratten won't necessarily be there in 4 years time, surely if we chose to upgrade our coach it doesn't all go back to the start again. At this rate we have a 15 year plan where players will play their entire career without being part of the end of the plan.

I think it is safe to say that the arrival of Richard Pratt to the Presidency plus the signing of Swann, Icke, Ratten and Judd to CFC is the line in the sand for the rebuilding of CFC.

So you can call that the start of 2007 but Swann and Icke only arrived in March and obviously Ratts reign commenced in July (?) so the 1st chance to do anything about list management came at the end of 2007.

So realistically I think we are 1 year into the 4-6 year rebirth of CFC as a flag contender. Having picked up Murphy and Gibbs prior to 2007 certainly helps our cause.

CFC under Pagan did not have the resources, money, stability or Presidential leadership to commence a meaningful push forward with a sound plan for the Club. Simple fact.

Regards Cazzesman

That can't be wright maybe in terms of making $ for the club with sponsors and the rest, but as in the team, every club can say that once there is a clean out.

Pagan did not have the resources, money, stability to get the best off field but on field he had the same as all other 15 clubs with the players taken.

The players recruited from 2007 and before they can't be all useless or not good enough and several have been playing now together since 2005.

The players stock started at least 2005,so you think it would have started at least the next year 2006,so we probably year 3 of a 6 year development. I would think we should be playing finals next year but not getting carried away winning a flag for at least 2 years after that.

We should move our base to Waverley as well.

And how about this for our new clash guernsey?

I understand how you may post thoughts like this but you are coming from a position of naivety about how much trouble the club was in during 05 and 06. The club was months away from being insolvent at 1 stage.

We may have picked the players during that time but there was little support behind the scenes for them. It won't matter how many star players you have in a team if the infrastructure around them is below par.

Hawthorn did well with the Tasmania sponsorship, money from an island wanting tourism. Maybe Carlton should look at getting a similar sponsorship, not many islands left, could try for Phillip Island or Gabo Island, or if we are really desperate, New Zealand.

I know the club was considered at one stage heading to insolvent but no one really believed a club with so much history and not long ago success would fold that easy.

The club is famous and has several wealthy people that wouldn't want their club gone

I guess you could say guys like Livingston,Beasy,Sporn,Norman and Raso could have been players if we had the money for development
to get the best from them back then.

The Kangaroos seem to do well who really haven't got a lot that probably now with Brayshaw is getting more professional off field.

Rambo - Board Agenda Items during Collins' and Smorgan's Presidencies included "handing back our license to the AFL.

It was complacency such as your thinking that our club with its history of success would never be allowed to go under that got us into the financial mess in the first place - we are very lucky to have had Richard Pratt to bail us out this time - lets hope there is never a next time.
