Just throwing it out there.....
One for the boffins and also looking for Jarusa's stats here for the case to be made
He is one off our best ever tally (100 by Jezza in 1970) without playing finals, and has been a consistently good goalkicker/targetman for a completely pathetic team. His Coleman medal 2 years back in a bottom squad is testimony to his talent.
Consider that Jezza in 1970 played in a premiership team and had a brilliant midfield feeding him. Fevola for 6 seasons has been number 1 to the worst midfield in the league.. and this year as our midfield has begun to turn around, he has taken his goal-tally along with it.
If Fevola played for Hawthorn he'd be on 120 now (.... and Buddy would be too if he had Fevola's set-shot skills)
There's a lot to be said for "relying too much on one player"... but great teams and great forward lines still have marquee forward lines. Dunstall for example kicked massive bags, but it would be difficult to double or triple team Dunstall because there was Hudson, Brereton, Buckenara etc who would be dangerous. Quality forward lines can spread an opposition defence and all be dangerous, and still look to one player to kick bags. Thats what Hawthorn today do. Hawthorn won't look at Buddy's 100 as an over-reliance on one player.
So, when you consider the main opposition for Fevola's "best carlton fullforward ever", some may not strictly speaking be competition. Jezza and Kernahan played most of their careers in other positions.
Soapy Vallence is our FF of the century. Played at a time when the club wasn't all that good (the 30s), he was also a big game player. He kicked 722 goals in 204 games (ave 3.54).
Fevola's on 486 goals from 164 games... an average of just under 3.
Vallence never got close to 99 goals but then again played fewer games in the season. Fevola's never kicked over 8 in a game whereas Vallence kicked (I think) a game high of 11, and kicked other bags of 10+ (Jarusa, help me out)
So statistically Fev is behind Soapy whereas Soapy lacks some of the personal accolades (Coleman medal)... (though Soapy played in the same time as Coventry so ... yeah....
Boffins...... thoughts?
