Ratts has done a magnificent job this year, anyone that thinks otherwise has no idea. Cheers.
Not sure about that.
A team with arguably the best midfield in the comp, one of the best forwards, a solid defence with run should be doing better then what we have been doing against the quality sides that are coached brilliantly
Let me elaborate a little.
1. We have one 9 games this year, we managed 7 1/2 in the last two years.
2. Most experts had us finishing 15th - 16th. We will finish anywhere from 12th - 8th.
3. The kids have developed. Murphy and Gibbs have been outstanding this year. Jamsison, Grigg and Bower ( prior to injury ) have cemented spots in the team. Don't forget how harshly Pagan treated the kids last year, one bad error in a game and they were benched, then dropped with their confidence shot.
4. The players love Ratts and are playing for him. Happy players = wins. Refer to Pagan's record if you disagree.
5. The bleeding has stopped. We are not copping the beatings ( 100+ losses ) that we had last year. Our two worst defeats have been 55pts to the Cats after Collingwood smashed them and 51pts last week against a red hot Kangaroo's. Also note the comeback's. Against PA I thought we may have been in for a 10 goal thumping, under Pagan I have no doubt this would have occurred, we won the game. Ditto against the Bulldogs.
6. I love Ratts passion. Ratts displays a passion that I have not seen in our club for a long time. Make no mistake Ratts is coaching for the club not himself. He wants the club back where it belongs.
7. Respect. Teams now respect and fear us ( barring Geelong offcourse ). When we started the season 0 - 3 they were laughing at us. Now we are respected. No matter how far behind we are, teams know they are not safe until the final siren.
They are just some of the reason's I think Ratts has been great this year. I'm also very impressed with how he handle's himself in the media.
Has Ratts been outcoached and made mistakes this year? Offcourse he has, every coach has. If they weren't then every game would be a flowering draw.
Don't forget where we are coming from. Some may have expected finals this year but I think that was always a long shot, for some straight kicking against the Swans and Crows we may be in the 8 now but that's irrelevant. Progress has been made and next year will be our time. Judd will have a full pre-season next year, Kruezer will stronger and fitter as will Browne, Grigg, Bower, Armfield and others.
I'll expect finals next year, if we fail maybe then I'll question Ratts.
