to clarify a few things...

you cannot lose your licence for 28 days for getting too many demerit points. once you hit 12 points in any 3 year period, you get the 'option letter'. this gives you the option of either taking a 3 month suspension starting from 28 days from the date of the letter, or you can take a 12 month bond, also atrting 28 days later. if you accrue 1 single point in that 12 month period your suspension is doubled to 6 months.

to be issued a 1 month suspension, it is generally for a speeding offence in which you have been done between 30 - 34 kph over the speed limit.

if you get an 'on the spot' 1 month suspension, this takes effect 28 days after the offence unless you challenge it in court.

once you are in court, the decision is immediate.

and to put it into perspective, the fact that he was not speeding or drunk whilst driving suspended does not make it not so bad....

the reason he was suspended in the first place was that he had done the wrong thing on the road, potentially putting himself and others at risk.

i am by no means advocating a crucifixion, but i hate people glossing over or making light of these situations.

hope young Andrew takes stock of the seriousness of road safety. If he isn't maybe just consider the fact that similar idiot road behaviour has cost the lives of some 7 month olds....

NARC..................!

kindest regards tommi

Not to mention the possible legal ramifications of anything going wrong if you drive while unlicensed ... such as having an accident, even if not your fault.

spot on headplant. imagine David Teague's incident happened to Walker. Mechanical failure leading to serious accident causing injury. that's jail time right there. no suspended sentence. and kiss an AFL career goodbye.

Imagine if this happened..... Imagine if that happened.....

It has all been said before in this thread and it's all hypothetical. The fact is none of it did happen. No one here has questioned the fact that AW's actions were completely stupid, but for god's sake, judge his case on what actually did happen. He was pulled over, was found to be driving unlicenced, went to court and the law has dealt with him. Story over.

The question I have to ask is: If the matter was as serious as a few here seem to suggest, then why on earth did the magistrate only hand him a suspended sentence, suspend his licence for 2 months, and give him a piddly $500 fine? It seems like a slap from a wet lettuce leaf if ever I have seen one!

Would it have something to do with the magistrate having access to the full details of the case rather than just speculating at will?

Driving the car to Court really got me. Made me laugh... seems a crazy thing to do.

I was giving evidence in a case in the Darwin court a while ago when I noticed some hectic police activity. Apparently in the court next door, a guy had lost his licence for the third or fourth time and walked straight out of the court, got in his car, did a burn out and took off driving up the road. Police gave chase, apprehended him and dragged him back to the same magistrate that he had appeared before only minutes earlier.

For some reason the judge was not all that impressed and handed down a rather severe penalty.

Also heard of a guy going to court to get his licence back after a drink driving offence and going across the road for a few stiff drinks (read about 8) before his hearing.
