Pros:

Got a great lesson in how to play hard running, extremely disciplined and well drilled and structured team footy, from a team which has been working together on all aspects with the same coach for a few years now. And a team which turned up to play 4 quarters.

Cons:

See above.

We got taught a footballing lesson today. We got to see a mature, well drilled side up close and personal. Laidley has been in charge of that group for 5 years now and has got them playing to a sound game plan.

That 18 man zone at the kickouts made our life miserable and we were under pressure the whole time.

We were killed at the stoppages as Juddy was playing with one arm behind his back courtesy of Rawlings but we still tried to direct the ball to him. This was asking a little too much.

Too often we had 3 blokes sucked into the contest and the ball would get flipped out to the waiting (lurking) Harvey et al and away they would run.

Today was bad for us in terms of making finals this year but I think it will provide excellent food for thought for Ratten and co and hopefully we'll become a better footy side as a result.

Cons

That umpiring was a joke.

I was amazed at the amount of bad bounces we copped today. It just wasn't our day.

Don't blame Kennett for shutting down schools and hospitals left right and centre. Blame those who voted for him...

There is a little truth in what you say though - but everyone else cops it when they have a bad game and they don't get that defence - so why should Saddo?

PROS:

Not much. Fev kicking 6 against the odds - despite kicking short when within shooting range for the first time I've ever seen... and Simmo missing the shot.

CONS:

Umpiring - 'nuff said.

Stevens shocker.

15 minute fade out in the second quarter.

Could not hit a target under pressure - a dozen kicks HITTING THE OPPOSITION ON THE CHEST with no Carlton players in sight.

and worst of all...

Simmo streaming into the forward line, dodging a player - the (either kicking it to an opposition player or turning it over otherwise) - falling to his knees. WHERE HE STAYS THERE FOR THE NEXT 30 SECONDS UNTIL NORTH TAKES A MARK IN THEIR FORWARD LINE.

Get up! I was following him and it wasn't like he ran two lengths of the ground before collapsing.

Pros:

dare I say it, we'll miss the finals. Would have been a false dawn. I could just see us crawling into 8th, beating the Filth and finishing top 4 or 6. A joke, we're nowhere near it, the boys will realise the hard work still ahead of them.

Cons:

All I saw was the 3rd quarter, the rest I listened to. Must have been at least 15 handballs in the 3rd that landed at the feet of teammates (and because the teammate still gathers it, they class as effective, which hides the truth). Our skills are still scratchy, and won't improve across the board until we turn over a few more.

Should never have been selected and ultimately exposed.

PRO: Waite our best followed by Murph, Judd & Fev

CON: Beaten by a stronger and better drilled team who wanted it harder than us

SPECIFIC CONS:

1. Inability to get our kick ins right
2. Inability to apply pressure on the opposition kick ins
3. Saddo selection was bad enough but too leave him a 6ft 3in at best very ordinary defender against a 6ft 10in ordinary to good resting ruckman was bad coaching by Ratts
4. Our defensive game & accountability not good enough today led by the usual Stevens, Scotland et al
5. Fisher is a luxury 4th forward we cannot carry. He has next to nothing ground level skills and is pretty much a one trick pony
6. Simmo after 6 years at the club has not improved his right side......because he has no right side
7. Russell the gap betwwen his best and worst is too large
8. Unable to run the lines withintent.

Pros:

* Fev - he win's matches for us when we are on top in the midfield
* Waite
* Hopefully missing the finals this year will be a spur to make it next year

Cons:
* Not sure why Krooz didn't play forward more like last week to give us another option
* Saddo's a good bloke, but the game has pased him by
* Thornton continues to be led to the ball and he doesn't tackle. Can we trade him for Firitto?
* Thought Simmo was well down today. Couldn't get near it and that dingo Sam Power ran off him.

Kreuzer's ruck work - at some of the centre bounces today he rose above Hale/Petrie and palmed it beautifully to an awaiting mid.

Pros:
- Murphy (BOG for us)
- Waite (AA CHB played really well)
- Kreuzer's game was good, getting better
- Hampson showed more this week, and just needs more game time and tutelage
- 1st quarter was encouraging
- Can start focusing on 2009 and bringing in Austin, Bower, Anderson for valuable game time. Maybe start swinging players into different positions and keeping them there to see how they go.

Cons:
- Poor field kicking, again (needs plenty of work in the off-season)
- Fisher is struggling and lacks all round skills
- Too one-dimensional up forward
- Decision making poor
- Poor selection with Saddo (his last game in the navy blue)
- Smashed at the clearances

Pros:

Um FEV played ok (considering) - except those 2 50m penalties were a joke. The guy started on the boundary line near his goals and ends up taking a shot 30m out ? wtf TD is max like 150m long. Cant you measure umpire ?

Your Second Efforts are dropping off Fev.. And you are the best at 2nd efforts and 3rd and 4th

Waite

Kreuzer = the guy is a machine, contests rucks or throw ins and is down in the forward line within a minute. Oh yeah You go you good thing.

Cons:

1. HEAD GOES OVER THE BALL - too many Ill try and stop it with my feet.. miss ...turnover Kangas goal.. Fair dinkum, they play one game a week and to dive on the ball for the 3rd week in a row seems... like the worst thing to do today.

Disposals = terrible, More drills ratten, hand balls to feet ? looping high balls putting men on pressure ?

My favourite little nugget was well down today Simmo = wasnt Mr Contest Contest Contest today.

Umpires are a joke, So many times today Saddo had his shoulder ripped from the contest for nothing as well fevs Bs he cops. Today would have to be the worst game I have ever seen umpired for both teams.

Saddo was too small for Hale today... that hurt and I know half of you would like Bower back and so would I, but even bower would have found it trying.. Setanta is what we needed.

I expected to get beaten by a bigger, stronger, better drilled and more experienced team today.

After today the players will have learnt what is needed to play intense finals footy, we are not ready - not interested in making the numbers if we are not a real threat.

Just like the players Ratts and the coaching team will learn alot from today.

For example why was our lose player in defence always matched up by a North forward as their lose defender was left alone. The objective of the lose man is to fill space, defend and also to attack from defence. Too often we had 2 against their 1. Think and move away - just like they did at the other end.

When they had the run on in the second they were clearing the ball from the centre with ease. There was heaps of space - why weren't our HFF or wings told to come in from the back of the square to fill the space they were running in to. Harvey and Harding were starting in defence and then running forward from the centre. Our taggers were well down, we should have closed the game up after they kicked the first three in the second by filling the space between the centre and the North goals.

Very impressed with the way North blocked for each other and blocked our players allowing them to run in to space to receive the ball. This is why Hadley will be crucial if he can get fit. He has the body to block and make space for our runners.

Being a young side we need to learn to play smarter. For example no need to have six players chase the ball or an opposition player. This allowed the North players to run free. Under 10 stuff, too many chasing and not enough being accountable and smart enough to fill the gaps.

I haven't entered the keep or let go Setanta debate but FFS today clearly showed why we need him. Austin is the same size as Saddo and I dare say he would have struggled as well. Compare the size and weight of Hale against Austin and you will see that he to would have been pushed around as well. Having said that I would still play Austin in front of Saddo If fit I would also have Setanta in the side.

I believe the Club has been focused more on making the eight rather than development hence Saddo has been playing. I don't care how good or bad Aisake is playing in the seconds play him next week. Aisake was playing very good footy last year before getting injured so he was close last year so give him a run. Forget the eight and get back to development!

The Kangaroos blocking today was superb.

There was one little piece of play late in the game where there were three Carlton and three Kangaroos players all in very close proximity a kick ahead of the ball. Two of the Kangaroos players blocked all three Blues as a Kanga ran through and lead up for a mark. You could see it was a set play.

Then the two Carlton players and two Kanga players left moved down the ground and they did exactly the same thing again, one kanga managed to block two Blues, easy lead up and got a mark from a kick from the first player to benefit from a block. Another little set play.

Superb team play from the Kangaroos and a small insight into how they play smart and team oriented football. So the Con is I want to see Carlton be able to execute and also combat these types tactics on a regular basis. Does not happen enough at the moment.

Pros
- Kruez tried hard all day
- Juddy tried to do everything as usual
- Fevs had his kicking boot on
- Cloke had a crack and kept presenting

Cons
- Fevs as much as a con as a pro. Sulking, back chatting the umpires. If he tries to get a free kick from every delivery the umpires will NEVER pay him one
- Loose man in defence, it doesnt work for us and I dont know why Ratten persists with it
- Walker deep in defence, when he looked awesome up forward!
- Lack of pressure and intensity from our senior guys - Tbird, Stevo

+ 1 more. Trade bait if anyone will have him. Every one on one he goes to ground, and they sweep it away.
