I think missing out this year, will make the boys hungry in 09.
It's making me hungry DUC....and even greedy
GAVRO can have his opinion, but it's right he shouldn't use 'we' when giving 'his' opinion. That's railroading...frontier style in the wild west.
I think that the more disappointed we are at any loss in the lead up to the finals, means we know we are (surprisingly) close to finals action THIS YEAR. It means we are further developed than some considered or care to consider.
It's great to have something other than development to look forward to, to aspire to, to give the players something more than just game time to play for.
These kids playing for a finals berth will do far more for their development, hunger and belief in themselves and in the team than just playing out the year; so I'm glad they are playing for something called FINALS.
Furthermore, that passion and desire to take the team to the finals will do Carlton a lot of good in terms of encouraging player signatures to contratcs on Carlton's (fair) terms.
Bring on the onslaught to the finals. If we deserve to be there we'll get there.
In 2008 we:
beat 6th team Colonwood (twice) by 30 and 30 pts
beat 2nd team Bulldogs (twice) by 9 and 28 pts
beat last year's GF team Port interstate
beat last year's finalist WCE interstate
lost 3rd team Swans by 2 pts
lost 7th team Crows by 8 pts
...and we gave too many games away we should have won on current form. Bodes well for a good future regardless if we get picks 4,5,6,7,8 or 9.
What does that say? We are on the rise, where the previous year's finalists are on the decline, and other than Geelong, we can compete against all other teams in the final 8 (with 4 rounds to go).
Why shouldn't we dream, aspire and press for finals?
Picks in the draft?
I believe we need something the draft can't give us; a mature ruckman for 2-3 years to allow Hampson and Kreuzer to develop and give them some relief. As for CHF/ CHB....truly, I think we'll sort that out when Bower, Setanta, Austin, Hartlett, Waite, Thornton, Cloke and Jacobs sort that out. Just get me ONE mature ruckman!!
There's no reason our future CHB/ CHF wont come from picks 19, 20, 21, 22, or even 38, 39...No one knows. It's not like having Pick 1 when you can choose who you want.
Look despite being a great draft this year, we will not miss out on mid range great pick regardless of where we end; our pick of player is dependent on which players are available after the bottom 4 or 8 have their selection.
I don't want the so called best 2 players this year (Ntinini and Miles), I want a CHF or CHB from the draft, and I think we're going to snag one. Which one? Well you don't find that out till 5 years down the track. Just one will do. Thanks.
