Pretty harsh on Thornton, considering some of the games better defenders don't do much better.

Don't know if I can believe those Stats. I watched Max Hudghton tackle Fev at least a 10 times a couple of weeks back ........ Maybe they don't count the tackles when the footy is 100 meters away.

You will find that the tackle stats are based on tackles that STICK - or result in a free kick or bal up etc.

Sometimes a player can lay a dozen INEFFECTUAL tackles in a game and only be credited with one or two tackles in the stats.

You may think that I am being hard on Thornton for his poor tackle stat, but Thornton is the best example I could find of a carlton player very rarely tackling - which is atonishing considering that thornton has tackled approx. ONCE in every 2 games played for almost his entire career.

Fev was like that several years ago. Very rarely chased or tackled.

Fev now is one of our best tacklers and with another 5 tackles against the swans Fev is in our top few tackling players.

NOW WHY IS THORNTON NOT IN OUR TOP TACKLERS?

You've answered your own question already. His tackles don't stick.
He's not hard enough at em ATM IMO.

Get in the queue Hellenic, I was writing Thornton does not tackle enough threads years ago.

Check out his stats for 2005, 3 tackles in 14 games of football. He has actually improved since this time, but it is a part of his game that is still far behind his contemporaries.

Yes I know of Thornton's tackling history

But you have to excuse me - I only registered for this web site forum yesterday.

Thornton will be exposed when we are playing finals - hopefully we may be able to use him as trade before then - nothing personal against him. I just hoped that he would have improved that part of his game at this point in his career. he is still young enough to attract other clubs. Especially when the new teams enter and the draft becomes scandalised and corrupted by the AFL commission

STevo had 10 tackles when he was made captain against the tigers this year, His average per game is less than 3

THornton has had 10 tackles for the WHOLE season and he is a defender.

Just to compare, walker had 4 tackles in just 3 quarters against the swans.

Even pfeifer has had 13 tackles for the year and has hardly played a game.

Fev has been sensational in tackling this year and had 5 against the swans on the weekend.

Do you think that it is acceptable that a defender like thornton for example should tackle ONCE every second week?

Do you think that it is acceptable that Stevo breaks records for tackling ONLY when he is captain and then returns to his lower average the very next week?

I dont! I would be embarrassed at my tackling statistic if I were thornton

Since when is fullback a position measured by tackles? I would of thought smothers, spoils & shepherds were a better indication of hardness at fullback than tackles

The stats do suggest thornton doesnt tackle much - but as someone who watches every game and who gets annoyed when people dont put their body on the line or do miss tackles - I must admit that I dont recall ever getting upset at thornton for failing to do these types of things.

The main thing that sometimes annoys me with thornton is he doesnt check his opponent closely enough, especially on the lead - but all in all, I have thought thornton has done very well this year in respect of most of defensive jobs.

I would like to see stats on broken tackles - they are the things that annoy the crap out of me!
