Now lets ditch the Irish experiment and draft local kids.

Can you define local? Not born in Carlton, Victoria, traditional AFL states, Australia? What about those who cam to Australia when young, how young?

Not really that simple is it?

Gee...perhaps he just meant we don't go searching overseas for kids?

I don't really care either way.....just a bit tired of people (not singling you out sinbagger) making more of other peoples posts than is really there just to pick a fight.

Maybe Carlton have seen the light at last, it seems to me it will be better to spend time and money on a local young tall athletic basketball player than wasting big bucks and bring players from other countries to learn our code, it may have been alright if Clubs still carry a much larger list like they use to many years ago, then maybe we can persevere with one on the list, but as I see it, while we keep having these players on our list, we are denying other young kids a chance to develop.

Just my opinion, but seems pretty narrowminded and shortsighted to want to stop experimenting with Irish talent. We got a ripper in Setanta and could have added another one with Aisake. Sydney has a ripper in Kennelly. Collingwood has a ripper in Clarke. In two years time there'll be no good aussie kids available as they'll all be going to GC17. Do you want to focus only on the Aussie kids and settle with the 30th best out there, or try to find another Setanta, another Clarke? Clubs that are bold and tap the Irish pool will reap big benefits in years to come. We need to be an innovator, not a laggard. Don't know why its all gone a bit pear shaped for our Irish guys this year, but its not a lack of talent. Anything else should be manageable if we get good people in place.

So the kid's homesick . Thats probably all there is to it . Very few local kids make it , so it's logical that very few Irish kids will too . Setanta is well on the way to making the grade , and being a very important player forus , so I would say the irish experiment is working at this stage .

Sean Charles didnt want to play footy anymore, Troy Bond wanted out...I guess we should stop recruiting aboriginal lads as well, let em all go to the likes of Essendon*..
I like the club thinking outside the square and still think our ex hurling champion in Setanta has some value.....

..so you feel the need to respond by bagging my posts, I guess you are as much a comedian as I ;-)

OK, let me explain. I think the idea of ditching the 'Irish Experiment' is very simplistic. And yes my response was short and flippant but then so was the original post.

Firstly there is no 'Irish Experiment' as such, some clubs for various reasons (not just us) are trying to think outside the square and try untapped sources. Is there that much different between drafting a guy who only played basketball or rugby until late teens and drafting a guy who only played hurling or gaelic football until their late teens? I would think the risks would be roughly similar.

Of course coming from another country raises the bar but what about guys like Naitanui, Mal Michael and Rodan? Didn't some or all of these guys grow up in other countries? Yet they proved you could succeed from such a background. The there's guys like Stynes, Keneally and that collingwood guy.

So Sparkster, does this post meet your standards? Or do I need to try harder ;-)
