Not sure what's more amazing - that we could stuff up something so simple, or that 40,000+ Pies fans can afford a membership.

Don't be too down on yourself Tiana, while it won't be counted in the "official" membership count, it will help the club financially.

Maybe next year you will be in a better position to purchase your membership earlier and be more "official", but for me what counts is that you have become one of the Navy Blue Army. And THAT is official. :-D

Cheers Mrs C. I will definetly be doing it in time next season. :)
Just happy to contribute to this great club that has brought me such joy over a long period of time.

I know of a case of a 30 year plus member who is so old now that he can't make it to games, but still buys his "Blues member" membership....
IS anyone implying that we (club) should start saying....oh..."those don't count, or they aren't REAL members"....Like the AFL is STUPID enough to do.

If we counted all the non-match admission members, that would include pets, of which we've made much fun of Hawthorn for.

We should be above that.

I agree with Jars. Total transparency must be the way to go.

This is a major stuff up and i am embarrassed!

Firstly, we are number 4 in VIC: Not good enough

Secondly, Carlton are raving on about signing member 40,000 and we actually never made it

Thirdly, it was on our banner

fourthly, if we knew we had not made 40K more people may have bought them

We are the new Hawthorn!

If this sort of thing was done under the Smorgan regime there would be a torrent of abuse from supporters.

Obviously the current CFC have lots of brownie points already with the great work they have done, but this misrepresentation of the membership figures is really a disgrace.

Non game attending memberships have never been counted as members in the official numbers.

The expectation of Carlton supporters was that 40,000 members was the way it has always been measured in years past.

It was either deception or an oversight, I hope the club make it very clear to the supporters how they are representing membership numbers next season.

Jars is right, unfortunately.

And if any other club did the same thing we would go nuts at them.

This really is

Couldn't agree more with you guys - this is a classic stuff up which can't ever happen again. In recent years we've matched the AFL announcement, so why we changed this year is beyond me. If we want to show overall membership - then show ticketed and non ticketed - don't try and pass the numbers off when you should know that the public will interpret as ticketed....

Maybe those with the board contacts should pass on how stupid it makes us look in the scheme of things so they understand it is a silly mistake to make.

The actual figure isn't important. What's important is the trend. The trend tells me that we are breaking membership records...let's see what next year brings us. :-D

No, Pets are Pets!

I think we are saying the same thing. Transparency... BUT...we should take the lead and drop this "they're not REAL members sh!t"
AFL can publish figures as "game attending members, general membership and pet membership categories if they like...but as is reflected in some of these posts, there is only disappointment if you say "your not a REAL member"

I don't think I expressed myself clearly.

I would never infer that non-match members aren't "real" members. They've shown their support and laid down their folding stuff for the club, and for that everyone is grateful.

BUT, the club knows the rules when it comes to members counted in the official tally, and that's a membership entitling entry to 5 matches as minimum for counting in the total.

I'm disappointed that the club had us all excited, but in reality hoodwinked us in regards to the true official figures, and overstated the case.

Maybe it's tactical....

Set 40k as the goal for 2009.

Scoreboard at today's game congratulated all Carlton fans for helping to break the 40,000 member tally...

Screw the AFL count, we are Carlton, Flower the rest.

CARLTON is on target to reach a million season spectators for the first time. The Blues' total so far is 835,405, which averages out at 52,212 per game. Their previous best for a home-and-away season was achieved in their premiership year of 1995, when its total crowd number was 883,040, an average of 40,138 – The Age 24/07/08.

Hard to crack a million when you play half your games at a ground that only fits 30,000. The move from Princes Park might have been sad for nostalgic reasons but the value of having hundreds of thousands of extra live supporters was underestimated at the time.

How many members would we have now if we could only fit 30,000 into our home ground? How much less merchandise would we have sold if we had 200,000 less people turning up to games over the course of a year?

I'd still like to see us mainly at the MCG but even with the Dome/G split as it is at the moment it's good to see so many additional people able to turn up to games and see the club play.
