It's an interesting debate. I must admit to being surprised at the number of posters who seem to be open to (or even supportive of) the idea. Especially given the backlash the last time it was brought up, in the Smorgon era.

The issue I have is all about culture. It's the issue I have with Demetriou as well. Demitriou's decisions are all based on dollars, what will (or is likely to) bring in the most money. He rarely (the night GF is one instance) puts the culture and the tradition of the game before dollars.

Part of the strength of the CFC is over 100 years of history, tradition and culture. And part of that was playing home games for most of that time at Princes Park. The move to the Dome has diluted that to some degree, and interestingly many on here want out of the Dome (myself included). We see the MCG as the home of football, physical and spiritual, and so playing home games there does not dilute the fibre of the Club.

Sometimes we need to look beyond dollars, and recognise there are things that are more important than the effect on the bottom line. Respect him or loathe him, McGuire has done an extraordinary job at Collingwood in not only reinvigorating the culture, tradition and history of the club, but making it the strongest club (IMHO) culturally in the country. He is shrewd in his business dealing, but never does anything to dilute the essence of his club.

That is what we must strive for, to have the Carlton Football Club as a pillar of the competition that represents over 100 years of tradition, of history. Born and bred out of Princes Park, representing all that is part of Carlton the suburb, Carlton the people. and Carlton the Club and its supporters. Based in Melbourne, playing home games at a ground which fits with the essence of the Club.

There is a very valid argument around Carlton's need to wipe out debt, and increase revenue. If this supposed selling of home games is a one (or two) off to wipe out debt, then I can see the argument for it, but still strongly oppose it. I would rather raise more money from wealthy supporters (which I admit is not such an easy thing, but can be done) or other means, even if it takes longer. If it is an attempt to create an ongoing revenue stream, then the agument changes entirely, and I am even more strongly opposed. We sinmply need to find other revenue streams.
Good points Siegfried. I dont care about losing a home game from Telstra Dome.We have no allegiance to that place and in fact favors opposition clubs when we play there. Losing an MCG home game would be a different story as you outlined. There are suggestions we will be compensated anyway(as Haw members do with Tas games.)Come seasons end will anyone be seriously outraged that we should have played that 1 game at the Dome instead of the GC.I might make that my interstate trip for the year.

From my perspective I would hope that the club isnt considering it solely for $$$ reasons. For mine the discussion serves the purpose to illustrate how shit a deal we got via collo/smorgan.

In terms of an actual move of games to carrara, my only interest in it would be to try to improve our win/loss ratio. Surely we couldnt play any worse than we do at the dome currently.

I like the Dome, i really do. Especially for night matches in the depths of winter. Its by far the best viewing stadium in Australia. However, what really gets me about this deal isn't that we are being screwed ATM because we made our own bed first of all by Elliott right royally leaving the club in the shit and us members letting him do it. Its also not about us signing the contract because we desperately needed the upfront cash.

What really pisses me off is that when we went to the AFL's distribution fund that other clubs can get to willy nilly, we were told the money we'd get would be a loan. Now the Annual assistance fund, as the AFL keep telling us  , is to help even out the descrepancies between the clubs that get great stadium deals and the ones that don't.

Seeing that article, and now knowing what we get, How TF did we not qualify when off the field we were as screwed as North and Melbourne put together :?

because the afl claim it is to help clubs who have disadvantage through their history and supporter base. they claim that this isn't their fault. as for carlton, i was deemed that it was our own doing that we ended up in the mess we were in. afaic, those clubs being in the postion they are in now is also they're own doing, it's not our fault they weren't good enough to build a strong and successful history and have a big supporter base.

chicken littles halford? so because some of us associate the idea of moving home games interstate with the piss weak clubs of the competition, you label us as chicken littles? no "chicken littleness" about it. just people expressing the opinion that they don't want our great club to be perceived as one of 'those' clubs. if it was ever to happen, i would personally be extremely disappointed.

yes i am looking at it from a selfish perspective also. i pay for premium reserved seats for our home games. i guarantee that the price would not drop minus a home game. i'm not going to get the 'reciprical' right to an away game. i already pay for the away games.

but even moreso is the perception that comes with selling home games. i do not want my club associated with the likes of the clubs already talked about. can't say i have ever viewed them as visionary. if its such a wonderful thing why are these same clubs , ie North Melbourne, now seeking to change this very perception?? if people don't think it damages the brand, you need to re-evaluate. i really think it does.

and i quite realise its not set in stone, and probably barely even a floated idea in the think tank, but i just find the whole idea repugnant
