I was groomed to be a soccer player from a young age. Two of my team mates became Socceroo captains.

I've played Rugby Union and was part of the Victorian Schoolboys Rugby League premiers. I love sport because of the comaraderie, the passion, the health benefits, the excitement, the courage, the commitment and in general the entertainment it gives me.

I always had an interest in Aussie rules given EJ lived next door, and I barracked for Carlton. I followed Carlton more than anything else on earth, but played soccer.

After I turned 16, to my father's bitter disappointment, I left soccer and played senior footy for a team in Hawthorn of which my next door neighbour captained.

'Why?' my father asked. My reply was simple "Freedom". He was perplexed by this as are many supporters from different codes. The answer is simple; NO OFF SIDE.

I have never missed a League State of Origin game , and last night's game is testament to why that is so; it's a great game of tactics, tricks and brutal strength. Like Aussie Rules, there's room for all shapes and sizes; don't know how Sandilands would go though.

But no doubt imo Aussie Rules is the greatest game in the world; it has everything, especially unpredictability and high scoring opportunities. There's nowhere to hide!!

The one thing to remind your boss is that NSW and QLD were destined to adopt our very own unique AUSTRALIAN GAME as did all other states.

The game easily distinguishes us as a nation moreso than any other code of sport. It's ours, and if you don't respect that, you aren't a good Australian imo. It's like a pie and sauce, you don't have to like it, but you have to respect it's position in our culture and the Australian psyche.

So good is the game of Aussie Rules, that in the 1920's America businessmen were keen to buy the rights to the game before gridiron (US version of footy) became their staple. Why? Because it is a spectacular game.

Why are the 60-100,000 spectators of Aussie rules made up of nearly 50% from both sexes whereas at league games, the 10-20,000 spectators they attract are made up of approximately 15% women?

It's the excitement, it's the athleticism... and to consider that some of the specimens playing Aussie rules cover the same distance of half a marathon but sprinting, tackling, jumping, scrounging, protecting and sacrificing their bodies whilst doing that...you've got to resppect that courage and physical attribute regardless of which code you follow. Sport has no boundaries.

They're all great games, but there's something special about OUR game when one sees a game live from a good seat.

Ignorance of the great Australian code, is a reflection of the type of person your boss is. Surprisingly he's a boss. A boss with blinkers on may be a boss, but he aint no leader.

Tell me does your boss inspire you? If so, how?

I'd be surprised if he does.

Until each team plays each other the same number of times, the AFL, as a fair dinkum competition, cannot be taken seriously.

He (Mr Swann) said the honour and pride associated with the club's traditional navy blue jumper was priceless.

I've never understood why people in this country put Australian Rules down.

Whilst Aussie Rules is my prefered game of choice, it's far from being perfect and it can actually look to the NRL for some hints and tips.

For example:-

Our rules are far too confusing and just plain dumb............i'm all for protecting the man with the ball but jesus, if you get tackled these days all you have to do is dive forward and take your tackler with you and you earn a free kick for 'in-the-back'.............that's mindboggling.

Or high tackles? PLEASE............a penalty in NRL for a high tackle is when you damn near take the mans @#$%&! head off..................our high tackles are laughable...........no other way of putting it.
It's like the Heath Scotland free kick against the Pies (?) a few weeks back......He had the ball, had a defender rushing towards him, and he just ducked his head right into the player and was awarded a free kick. What a joke.

Occasionally, you get some very stupid Ref decsions in NRL (Cough-Cough.....the frigin 2006 grand final~!) but nowhere near as many as we do in AFL...........and it's because of the Rules. There are just way too many of em and they are far to technical.
Hands in the back is a joke...........just get rid off it and let the Umps decide. If the defender or forward has illegally pushed his opponent out of the contest, award a free kick.............that, you would think, would be the logical way of doing it.
Instead we pay a free IF a hand has even the slightest touch on another players back.

AFL is a great game and i think it's one of the most entertaining games in the world with the greatest crowds in sport attending................. but it's far from perfect and whilst NRL doesn't come close to the AFL, it has some great ideas that we can borrow from it to perfect our game.

I actually believe that in 10-15 AFL will be PERFECT! That's when Kevin Bartlett will die, Glenn Archer & Aka will be part of the rules comittie and get rid of these piss-weak embarrising technicalites.

Also, Ian Collins would have passed away and we can get some decent managment into Telstra Dome where the atmosphere will be second best in australia behind only the MCG!

I'm with Nick. I think it's extremely tactical to throw (girls throw, don't they?) the ball backwards when their goal is to move forwards.

When Mum and I moved back to the Canberra region in the late 80s I learned to like League. As ryan mentioned above, it's actually not a bad game. And, still, one of the best games of any sport I've ever watched was the 1989 Balmain v Raiders GF. For me the Super League killed any genuine interest I had in the game, that and living in London for a year helped me to appreciate a new "second" football code.

But, FFS, if we're going to get clowns crapping on about aerial ping pong, GayFL and such mindless shit, we've all heard it so many times. Well then they can suck it up in return. The players in Rugby codes do sniff each others bums and they do dry root the ground. It's a fact. Like a lot of these eternal debates, I personally only bite back when some fool has chosen to open the batting. And, if someone has done that, then they should expect Michael Holding coming in off the long @#$%&! run.

well it's a bit worse than that.

Everybody read "To Kill a mockingbird" have they? the way to get up a rung when you're the bottom of the heap is to try and drag someone lower rather than lift yourself up.

I cop this from my Sydney cousins everytime I see them..."areial pingpong, GayFL etc... " then they have classic comments like, "Yeah I was thinking of going to that game"

I enjoy watching most sports (am watching Wimbledon now!) and I work with a couple of guys..one's right into Table tennis and the other into (competitive) Fly fishing. I simply feel no need to even begin to bag them or their sport every Monday...

Easiest way to deal with it Pterg is nod and not react....that's the only reason he's bagging ...simple answers like "well I just enjoy going to games, meeting players at training, taking kids to the clinic AND watching it on TV"

I am at a conference in Milan with my boss. He is a Queenslander through and through. Last night was the Gala dinner... and he continually toasted Queenslands victory in the SOO. He is a great boss, but Queenslanders and their rugby league are the most annoying grouping on the face of this planet. They dont even get the fact that NSW doesnt even care that much about it in comparison.

One guy at the gala dinner table last night (from Melbourne) asked me if I supported Qld in the SOO. I told him that there is the old saying that you cant polish a turd, and that NRL is a turd, and therefore SOO is the biggest turd of the lot. At that stage my boss momentarily regretted bringing me over here
