One of the Blueseum writers is compiling a story on what Carlton has done with our first draft picks from each year. Some years we used them on key players (92- McKay, 93- Beaumont), some years we traded them (91 - Duke, 95 - Devonport, 01 - McKernan) with various results and some years we just went nowhere with them.

In 1987, Carlton picked Peter Bubner with Pick 12.

Who was he, and why don't we have any other records on him?

Peter Bubner was a Central Districts tallish midfielder.

Played in a few State of Origin games.

Was also used forwrd.

More known for his terrible haircut....massive part.

Suprised he didnt make it!

He played 199 games for Central District and is a Life Member of that club.
Won the club B&F in '83 for Central,stayed in SA (after getting drafted) largely as a result of the player retention scheme.
Went to Sturt for a year or two after Central moved him on.

Could kick the ball a mile, had a standing leap that would make most ruckmen blush. Never a physical player, used his brains to play the game.

I don't have much more to add other than that when Carlton picked him up for the 1988 season it was a surprise as he had turned down the opportunity to play VFL for 5 years straight.

The player retention scheme set up by the SANFL definately came into play here:


"This year it was Carlton's turn to fall victim to the player retention scheme when Peter Bubner signed up after being recruited. Bubner would later be included in Adeliade's initial training squad but was cut after missing a training session as an example of the type of discipline the new club expected. The retention scheme was designed to stop SANFL players going to the AFL. To qualify a player had to have played 6 seasons, 120 games and 4 state games, or if they were deemed to be a 'high priority' they need only 3 years, 50 games and 1 state game. Typically being drafted was enough for a player to move into the 'high priority' classification"

Played on Ablett one state game and beat him. I was at the game and he played a beauty. SOO was a great thing in the 80's!

I notice in the press on the eve of the 1988 season, Bubner was no longer being listed as a Carlton player.

I don't understand why we took the risk. He was a mature player who had been picked up before and who hadn't been close to coming over. I asked "Why!?!!??" at the time. It wasn't as if we were unaware that many good SANFL players were getting paid NOT to come over.
As a player I can recall only seeing him once. He could have been something if we'd got him early. He had a lot of natural talent, but wasn't an inside type. He could have filled a number of roles, from HF to mid.
